750ml bottle into Duvel tulip. Not sure when it was bottled, but I picked this up awhile ago.

Appearance: Free pour yields a 1 inch fluffy white head that dissipates quickly. Pours a clear gold and leaves big lacing arches.

Smell: Mild cherry, with a big hit of lactic sourness and lovely flowery aromas. Mineral-y effervescence with a succulent, tangy fruity undertone. Very pleasing.

Taste: Fruity up front (cherry, lemony citrus) and immediately tart, getting assertively sour into the finish. Aftertaste remains fruity and has some of that mineral-ness from the smell. Second sip is tongue tinglingly sour up front, and remains pleasantly fruity.

The sourness is pretty aggressive, but nowhere near as sour as, say, most Cantillon beers. Nor is it very acidic.

In all, the flavor is pretty mild. Fruitiness is half sweet tarts, half real fruit, and not very complex. Very little oak flavor, though there's some oak influence in the finish occasionally. Deeper into the bottle, some interesting bretty funk emerges, but even that is pretty subdued.

Good flavor, but pulls a few too many punches.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied. Very tart. Low to moderate carbonation (just right actually). Bit underwhelming finish.

Overall: Very good beer, especially for the price. If it's bargain sour Belgian beer time, I'd opt for Lindemans Gueuze Cuvée René over this beer, but that's probably more personal preference than anything else (more refreshing, more oak, fruity flavor profile more my thing). At the same time, this is leaps and bounds better than Monk's Café Flemish Sour Ale.

Could be a good intro to wild ales. It's "not complex enough," but this is in comparison to other really deep and amazing wild ales. It's a satisfying beer.

Poured chilled in flared sample glass @davewhite4, the third of a Petrus trilogy.

A: pilsener-like; little head; very good carbonation; not much lacing
S: very sour aroma; quite prominent for a sour ale (the best nose of the three we tried)
T: lemon, honey, much like a cold hot toddy; very sour, Pimms-like; I don't detect the aging; flavorful throughout, with fruit flavors matched nicely against the sourness
M: decent

Best of the three Petrus beers
