An English-style stout, this beer is brewed with lactose, brown sugar, and seven different malts that give it a full body with hints of chocolate, roasted coffee and espresso.

At the bar, Duncansville location, 1/7/23, on the way home from the Bell's after Daddy Dave's surgery.

Delightful cocoa aroma, stoney and rich.

Nice mouthfeel, smooth but not syrupy.

Slightly sweet, stoney, rich cocoa and coffee. This is a very solid stout.

On tap in Hummel' s Wharf.

Pleasant dark brown, not black, no ruby that I discern.
No particular aroma.
Flavor is rather unpleasant. A bit sour, bitterness from black patent but not particularly roasty, no coffee or toffee or any other positive embellishments.
Mouthfeel okay, not creamy or distinct though.
Really disappointing.

This was my favorite beer out of 8 sampled. Nice and roasty with a hint of smoky char and some vanilla, coffee, and oakiness as well. If I had to find a criticism it would be that there wasn't much of a head.

A press junket took me up to their Selinsgrove location where a mixed-six was conferred on each attendee as part of the outing. I know that The Bros. Alstrom like transparency in such matters & I have nothing to hide. I have known brewer Bill Kroft for years & Bill knows that I am equitable in my reviews.

Man, I wish that they would make the leap to CANs! Marzoni's fills what could be a gaping void in south-central PA & the fact that they have begun bottling is a step in the right direction, but there are so many outdoors activities out that way that CANs would be a natural fit.

If it must be a bottle, at least let it be a standard bevel with a crown cap that Pop!s when I open it. I performed a moderate pour, followed by an in-glass swirl, raising a little over a finger of dense, foamy, light-brown head with good retention. Color was Black/Opaque (SRM = 44), allowing ZERO light penetration. Nose had a pleasant roastiness, more towards coffee than dark chocolate, although both were discernible. Mouthfeel was medium, but it seemed to me to be thin for the style. The taste was a 180-degree opposite from the nose in that the dark chocolate flavor was prevalent & underlain by the coffee-like roastiness. Finish was dry, which makes sense since I have only ever heard of Sweet Stouts & Dry Stouts, but nothing in between. This was a Dry American Stout and if such is your bag, I am sure that you will enjoy it.

Served on tap in a sample glass.

Appearance: Darker brown with a thin beige head.

Smell: Malts and coffee.

Mouthfeel/ Taste: Smooth medium bodied. Taste of coffee and Malts with a little alcohol on the finish.

Overall: Good Stout. I would have it again.
