500ml bottle (best by 9-22-2010, drank on 9-6-2010) into Samuel Adams sensory pint glass. 2 finger off-white small bubbled head reduces to 1/2 cm head that sticks around with spotty lacing left behind as the beer is drunk. Slightly hazy dark amber color with a ruby tinge.

Aroma of brown sugar/molasses, lightly medicinal lemon, frosted cinammon raisin roll; the aromas are a little on the weak side and disappointing. Taste is lightly tart lemon honey, very bready malt, light orange rind bitterness that comes up towards the finish with a orange and molasses sweetness too. Hints of raisin, dates, and banana are in there too. Lasting threads of light roasty bitterness, big breadiness, and sweet orange through the long finish. Medium low carbonation and medium body.

Appearance and aroma were disappointing but misleading versus the taste which was pleasantly good. A little on the sweet side but very easy to drink. Almost like a liquid beer version of fruit bread w/molasses. I dunno if it was because of the age, but it wasn't for the tired aroma, this would've rated a bit higher. This is quite good and I'd definitely drink it again. Would be interested to try it in London at the source!

look: 3 | smell: 3 | taste: 3 | feel: 3 | overall: 3

Appearance: Amber, copper colored; light tan head, medium, long lasting

Aroma: Malty; dried fruit; sweet, warming alcohol; caramel notes; light hops

Taste: Juicy, malty start with lots of underlying roasted grain bitterness; dry, nutty aftertaste

Remarks: A little bitter for my tastes; surprising, too, since the aroma is so sweet

Did not score A, T, S, M at that time; disregard those scores

Pours a lovely deep caramel brown with a light n tight head. A fair amount of lacing clung to the glass. The nose was faint, with (again) hints of caramel/molasses and bread crust.

I thought it had a well-balanced consistency...not too thick or thin. The taste was wonderful; however I wouldn't call it a refreshing warm-weather beer...I could see myself enjoying it on a crisp autumn evening. I tend to equate beer styles with the seasons, and this is a full-bodied and full-flavored brew best enjoyed in cooler weather. I noted a boozy but clean finish. Overall a thoroughly enjoyable ale that I look forward to enjoying in the future.

A: Pours a dark mahogany color with a good sized head that slowly fades to ample lacing.

S: Aroma of roasted malt, burnt coffee, dark fruits and spice.

T: Taste is a mixture of roasted malt, some dark chocolate, dark fruits and some spice. Nice bitterness and a dry finish.

F: A solid medium body, smooth with a creamy texture and an excellent balance. As it warms the flavor and character is enhanced.

O: Great beer to start the new year with.

a: poured into an english pint glass. 2-3 finger rocky, uneven beige head. dark amber with some red light showing through

s: sweet caramel and berries upfront. nice bready backbone pushing the rest of the aroma through

t: right up front you're greeted with some generic dark berry flavors followed by a touch of hop bitterness and a very faint...tea leaf/something floral. all of this is backed by a very pleasant caramel/toffee sweet malt backbone. there is a hint of spice, maybe clove. just a touch of alcohol which plays well off the sweetness

m: mouthfeel is on the lighter side of medium, with a nice amount of carbonation that helps the flavor in the mouth

o: nothing complex, but absolutely nothing offensive about this beer - a good example of a british, and definitely worth your time.

Absolutely beautiful label on the gorgeous brown glass 50cl bottle. one of the nicest bottle presentations around. totally classy.

Pours a dark clear reddish caramel into a nonic pint. Fluffy warm grey head.

Tastes just like you would expect a perfect dark ale or old ale to taste. Typical caramel malts and mild English hops. Nothing unpleasant, which is its strength, but again, nothing outstanding or distinguishing, which is its weakness.

Mouthfeel is pleasant but then again not outstanding.

A perfect example of style, however, not worth a premium price over the standard English import.

Excellent honey and chestnut brown colored body with a thick, creamy head on top. Rich, sweet malty aroma; molasses and brown sugar with notes of figs and maraschino cherries in the background. Sweet and malt-forward flavors; hints of graham cracker, cinnamon, and toffee; mild hop bitterness builds up some steam at the end of the taste and mellows out the malt sweetness; trace of alcohol warmth. Medium bodied, smooth with a light and pleasing residual sugary feel.

A very well-done big ale. Malt character dominates throughout with hops and alcohol presence co-mingling in a well-balanced fashion. Rich, complex, warm, and inviting.

Live review

Pours a clear light brown with red cast, two fingers of dark beige head, finally a thick cap framed in crazy lace on the nonic.

Bready malt, herbal hop, a bit of that English yeasty tart, lighter floral hop and caramel notes.

Wonderful flavors in perfect balance, the stock in trade at Fuller's. Front of sip is full of bready grain and herbal hop, and picks up caramel and floral, rounded yeast, some spicy alcohol, and ends with the sweet and drying herbal flavors cleanly remaining on palate.

Med./high carb. but not carbonic to a fault, lots of viscosity but not cloying, and a finish that leaves the palate craving next sip.

Wonderful beer, highly recommended. Hope to try this one fresher, but even after a trip cross pond this beer fucking rocks.
