Poured from a pint glass into a pint glass. With just a little left over because of the foamy head.

Head was a finger notch and half thick. Nice retention, but just wished it lasted a minute longer, as it gained a very pleasant aroma.

Hazy, lighter amber in appearance.

First accents of forest pine leading into stronger smells of malt and crisp green apples. Very much like a pilsner in aroma.. but with stronger and more malty accents.

Notes of apple and light lemon folding into a toasted dark malt whole grain on first sips. Spicey when it's cold, alcohol is more present and slightly bitter. Sweetens as it warms up.

Medium bodied in carbonation.

An interesting find at the local beer market. Very european in style. Now just got to compare it to its American cousin Rogue.

One finger of head on an almost clear copper colored body.
The aroma is wet hay and barnyard with the slightest lemon. Bold.
The taste is a rich malty sweetness at first, then a lemon bitter with a quickly following candy sweet note.
Smooth texture with moderate carbonation and medium body.
An enjoyable beer for sure.

From: Binny's, Bolingbrook, IL
Date: None, but "705" stamped on label
Glass: Ayinger willi glass

Pours a 2cm head of off-white foam composed of medium and large-sized bubbles. Retention is about average, lasting a bit over a minute as the head falls to a thin cap atop the body of the beer, thicker around the perimeter. Lacing is fairly substantial and evident in interesting patterns scattered around the glass' sides, somewhat like the framing for stained glass. Body is a fairly light copper orange color with a hint of brownish hue; light brings out a strong, pale, copper tint through the hazy body. Carbonation is visible despite the cloudiness of the beer, appearing sparse and sluggish.

Aroma of sweet bread, slightly cracker-like, grassy and floral Saaz hops, a touch of honey, and a hint of bubblegum. Scent could definitely be stronger, particularly along the hop and malt axes; probably the weak point of the beer.

Taste is appropriate for the style, but for the ethanol content, I was expecting a much bigger beer in terms of flavors. Flavor is, overall, a little watery, somewhat disappointing, but not bad, still above what I'd consider average for the style. Tasting opens with somewhat bland sweetness with a touch of honey on the front of the palate. This changes by mid-palate to sweet bread, honey, mild European bittering hops with a green, leafy edge, and ethanol. Back of palate picks up increased European hop bitterness, bread-like sweetness, and ethanol. Aftertaste of mild breadiness, light graininess, modest European hop bitterness, and mild ethanol.

Beer is medium to medium-light in weight, with medium-low levels of carbonation, enough to just create a mildly fizzy, modestly foamy mouthfeel as this travels across the palate. Finishes dry, as one might expect from the bittering hop and ethanol content of the beer, with modest residual stickiness across the palate. A very pleasant and satisfactory mouthfeel, overall.

The color was a nice clear golden yellow with a reddish hue. There was very little white foam and not much lace on the side of the glass. The smell had a strong aroma of Saaz hops with a hint of citrus. The taste was of hops, with a citrus bitterness, but also, a citrus sweetness. A little bitter on the palate and aftertaste, but, not overly bitter. Overall, a nice balance for this Maibock.

Attractive in the big chalice, though the foam is coarse and doesn't last so well. Golden amber with an orange cast. From the crack of the bottlecap you get that whiff of skunky Saaz hops.

Sweet and thick mouthfeel. Seems like the usual Euro-lager but more sugary and stronger. Malty and slightly hot. Grows more unpleasant after some sipping. Sort of a malt liquor with a peculiar abundance of hops. Ends with a hot and dirty bitterness.

Another sweetheart deal from the distributors for BevMo. From the 500 ml bottle.

Appearance - Pours a clear, golden honey color with a finger width head and average retention, resulting in a lace that's sparse, hanging mostly around the edges.

Smell - Notes of honey and lightly toasted grain. Hints of grassy hop.

Taste - Follows the nose; starts with big honey sweetness, then a bit of grassy bitterness kicks in, increasing as the flavor works it's way into the finish. Subtle hints of butterscotch in the aftertaste, before more bitterness returns.

Mouthfeel - Medium in body, with decent carbonation. slick and smooth to begin, but ends a bit dry.

Overall - An interesting beer; lots of honey character, but the bitterness cuts through to give this brew a bittersweet quality not unlike a lot of Octerberfest brews.

This pours a light amber tan with some foaming that dies down into a tight lace. There’s a lightly sweet aroma followed by some light malty notes. I get a mild caramel hint of sweetness which rounds out the flavor. It’s honeyed and mellow and exceptionally smooth, with a nice rounded finish. A little too sweet for a starter beer but I could easily see having this one for dessert.

Found this at Woodman's -- 7.5, wow. I wonder how the Czechs handle a Maibock -- other than strong, that is.

A -- Unexpected mild gusher. Somewhat hazy deep gold with a thick, long-lasting white head.

S -- Sweet, bready malts up front with that spicy, woody Czech hop character balancing out. Peppery, near phenolic alcohol with warming.

T -- Sweet bready malts up front with the spicy hops finishing off and a bitter, mildly lemony aftertaste.

M -- Mouthfeel is soft and smooth with a medium-light body and lightly crisp finish.

O -- Overall, this is a good beer, but like Urquell I can see the Saaz hops becoming too fatiguing to my palate. I prefer the German renditions of the style better, but that doesn't take away from this being a well-made beer.

A: A nice cloudy orange. Has a glow to it, really attractive.

S: Floral hops and stone fruits with some nice herbs and yeast.

T: Very well balanced sweet and bitter flavors. Some clean, light roast flavors, hops and grains.

M: Nice and filling to the palate with a coolness. Covers the mouth and fades away quickly.

O: A really wonderful beer. Suprised me to find out how good it was.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass.

Look – light amber in color, clear, with very good carbonation and about two fingers’ worth of frothy almost-khaki-colored foam that dissipates slowly.

Smell – good and malty, and much like a Bavarian style lager.

Taste – sweet and malty, but a bit of a musky tinge to it that hits you in the middle of the taste. There’s a little bitterness in the aftertaste, but not too strong. The sweetness of it is interesting, and hard to place. The high-ish abv is not really noticeable in the taste.

Mouthfeel – very well balanced, but it leans more toward the creamier side than I would have thought.

Overall – very interesting brew, with a very good taste.

A - Light amber body, super clear. Two fingers of foamy white head.

S - Grain, earthy husk, slight sourness, honey, old dough.

T - Sweet grain at the start but quickly turns to an herbal, minty perfumey, earthy bitterness. Finishes with a tangy lemon sweetness.

M - Medium to full body, creamy carbonation.

There's something off-putting in the flavors. Almost like a forced herbal mint. Didn't come together very well.

The label says this was named the "world's best lager" in 2008 by Beers of the World magazine. I'm not sure about that distinction, but it is a quality lager. Then again, I don't drink many lagers any more.

I have twice now poured the 330 ml bottle into a pint glass. It is quite carbonated and thus makes a big head. The beer is amber/gold in color and has a real kick. The bottle reports 7.5% alcohol by volume.

The taste is initially of malt, but then a decent array of hop flavor steps up for an overall balanced taste. There are some interesting flavors in the mix -- some kind of fruity, some kind of earthy. I liked it and will definitely finish the rest of the set I received. However, I probably would not actively seek out this beer. I also wouldn't turn down a pint if offered.

Pours a clear and deep honey-hued amber-orange colour, with a fine ring of white film around the edge of the glass. Pretty decent weight to it, and the carbonation forms in lovely tight bubbles. It looks pretty decent, all up. Not brilliant, but decent.

Nose is sticky and a little sweaty, with grassy hops coming through above a very grainy and slightly earthy base. Very classically European characters to it, but more like a generic Euro lager with the volume turned up than the green, noble freshness you can get. Only average, to me.

Taste is similar, in that it has a rather biting metallic hop character through the centre, but swirling sweet malt rushing around the outside. Again, its genesis seems to be rather in the generic Euro lager style, but with a bigger hop note through the centre and a heavier body backing it up. Booze is noticeable—despite the heavy body, it doesn't have enough heft and character to support such a level.

Hot, generic and rather unpleasant. It's perhaps not actually offensive, but it's unnecessary in its weight and aggression. I've had far, far better.

I got this single, 330ml brown bottle at the Binny's store in Plainfield, IL for $1.79. No freshness date.

The beer poured a clear golden orange color with a 2-finger white head that lasted about 2 minutes. Lacing was decent.

The beer smelled like a mix of caramel, toffee, and honey.

Mostly toffee flavored malty sweetness with plenty of mild hops for good balance. Both the toffee and the bitterness rermain in the aftertaste.

Medium bodied with slightly higher than average carbonation.

I liked this a lot. Easy to drink with well hidden alcohol.
