This place comes in a close second behind TB Brewing as far as overall experience, in my opinion. A rather small and quaint place if you take the outdoor seating out of the equation. We walked in and had the locals giving us the once over. I felt like I was intruding their territory. A bit weird. But once inside, the selection was pretty awesome. I chose to have Old Rasputin on draft. They also had other typical micros for the area. The Rasputin was great, but was served in a 10 oz glass. I dont mind the smaller serving size, but I would like to informed of that fact as I order rahter than being surprised. Other beers were in the 16oz pint glasses.
Nice atmosphere outside, which is where we chose to sit. A nice little bubbly fountain with some wooden benches and tables with umbrellas. The weather was great so I was in heaven.
The bar area is quite smokey so beware. Defintely check this out as it is in the middle of everything and just down the street from TB Brewing.

*Not a brewery, just a beer bar.*
They say when in Rome, do as the Romans do. When in Tampa, there are a few places that are "required reading" for us students of beer. New World Brewery is "required reading." Located right smack dab in the heart of hip Ybor City, New World offers indoor and outdoor atmosphere with benches, plants a covered deck, some nights they have live bands and it's dog friendly. The overall vibe is done-up warehouse.
Taps were impressive with some friendly regulars like Pilsner Urquell, Nostradamus and Duchesse De Bourgogne. There are some cold boxes behind the bar too.
The tender was quick and friendly. The inside-outside vibe is cool. Proper glassware earned points in my book. Could you bring your Mother here? Only if Mom likes to walk the dog and swig a brew on Sunday afternoon.

A must stop for the thirsty BA in Tampa/Ybor City.
Selection? Perfect for a BA: 20 on draft on 11/24/03: PaulanerX3, Sierra Nevada, Chimay, Turbo Dog, Rogue Yellow Snow, Anchors Liberty and Steam, Belhaven, St. Bernardus etc etc. Two large fridges of bottles with a great number of Belgians unseen in many places. Fairly decent American representation in bottles, too.
Outdoor beer garden faces the street. Indoor cavernously dark room features free (!?!?!) jukebox with ska and Wilco, Gomez and indie, Taj Mahal and Billie Holliday. Motif of globes pervades every corner. Foosball table. Single TV turned off (unless the Bucs are playing or some such momentous occasion.) Service carried out by a guy who liked to talk beer, and was knowledgable, if a bit, well, proud of himself and his employer. It's not such a bad thing when your choices are this numerous, and we could all afford to lighten up a bit, but no server needs to appear like a beer elitist when there are concerts to be created. Still, food and beverages arrived at a snappy pace with a smile.
Food is limited to pizza. Great, inventive pizza, to be sure, but that's it. There are plenty of places in the area to get other food, if you so desire, but this is the best selection of beer. I'd mention it in the same breath as Papago, Eli Cannon's, the Great Lost Bear, Bukowski etc.

Never thought to wonder why
Im not quite sure why I so enjoyed my visit to the New World, but something about this place definitely felt inviting and familiar. When I first walked in, an early Neil Young/Crazy Horse song played on the juke box, followed by an obscure Dylan tune. The place was well air conditioned in spite of the heat outside and the wide open doors to the large outdoor patio. Yet, even the open doors and several ceiling fans could not keep you from noticing the distinctly smoky aroma that permeates the interior of the NWB.
This place has character and, on a Monday night, had a local vibe that appeared to span a few decades. The interior is dimly lit except for the two foosball tables in the corner. There's video golf and even a pinball machine, but what makes this place a destination is the excellent selection of beers, on tap and in bottles.
Among the 25+ beers on tap they offered Double Grimbergen, Delerium Tremens, Old Rasputin, Youngs Oatmeal Stout, Terrapin Rye Pale Ale, Left Coast Apricot Wheat, Hoffbrau Dunkel, Dogfish Head 60 Min, Bell's Amber Ale, and Averys New World Porter. In addition, their bottled beer list included another 20, or so, Belgian style beers from the Duchess De Bourgone to Chimay, Merdsous (10, 8), St. Bernardus Abt 12 and American knock offs from Ommegang and Allagash. Other bottled beers included most of your standard American Macros, a good selection of Rogue offerings, Anchor Liberty, Great Divide's IPA and Imperial Stout, as well as, a few choice Germans.
Food is served during the day but primarily limited to appetizers and pizza. The bartenders were friendly and attentive, and the limited staff appeared to handle the relatively small crowd with ease.
During the day, I'd imagine this place may be different, but at night, its an old-school hangout with an impressive beer list. You just have to burn your clothes after you leave.

Free jukebox, cool decor and though it has diminished slightly still a fantastic beer selection. I really like the pizza too. The Belgian selection used to be freaking amazing. Now it's just good and you will always find a decent Belgian on draft.
My one gripe about this place is that they tend to shun the higher alcohol American Micros. I don't know why, but most of the american micros are all pretty basic low abv stuff. I'd like to see some Avery or DFH on more often since they can get it.
If you aren't into music...go early. It's a very live music focused place.

[ Update: July 2004 ]
Good news - 12 new tap lines going in at NWB. Looks like an expanded bottled beer selection from last visit in 03.
The downside - still allow smoking. Service gets bumped down a notch.
Original Review -
New World Brewery, though the name suggests, no longer brews. Whats left though is a fine beer bar. A short walk west on 8th Ave from the Tampa Bay Brewing Company and the Centro Ybor shopping/restaurant/cinema complex. Trees, tables, brick, wrought iron and cobblestone decorate the entry and front beer garden. A covered patio area accommodates some eclectic live music. The inside houses an L shaped bar that serves up several draughts, about a dozen or so quality brews. The bottled selection is quite varied and well thought out, though not terribly extensive. I found some unique (for FL) Belgians on tap (DeKonnick Cuvee) and in bottles last visit. They also have some very good pizza. The vibe here is a bit Bohemian but dont let that put you off if youre a khakis and Oxford shirt type (thats me after work). This place is very accommodating. I had excellent, friendly service each visit. Tables are available inside too. A cool place to check out while in Tampa (along with TBBC).

This isn't really a brewery, but they do have one of the better beer selections in Tampa on tap and bottle. Located off the beaten path you get a bit quieter atmosphere than the rowdy main strip. Dimly lit, and open space. They get some very interesting bands that play here. Food is a little above your average bar food, and everything is reasonably priced. Bartender is able to actually talk to you, unlike most of the over-crowded bars in Ybor. This is a nicely hidden jewel if you like good beer.

Really cool place on the west end of 8th Av. in the Ybor City section of Tampa.
Parking is right next door and only 1/2 a block from city parking if the free is full.
BBQ buffet is available M-F from. 11-3 pm. Priced by the pound - currently $6.50/lb - except on Wednesday night. Good que and plenty of Bottles
The beer selection is really good. 32 taps and over a hundred bottles span the range from Belgians (Scaldis & Corsendonk) to locals like Cigar City. Bottle selection is as broad and delicious as the taps.
The look is really cool with an expansive, shaded outdoor area, a big L-shaped bar and a half dozen tables inside.
So far, this is the best craft beer place in Tampa. Too bad the don't brew their own anymore. C'est la vie.

The name is a bit misleading, as this place has not actually brewed beer for many years. However they offer an excellent selection of draft and bottled beers that more than make up for anything that might be brewed on premise.
New World offers a very eclectic selection of beers, an eclectic crowd, and in a fairly eclectic environment. The beer selection varies from good to outstanding. As I write this review they are the only place in Tampa that I know of with Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale on tap. Mmmmm. Another 15 or so taps include a variety of micros, Belgians, and other good Imports. The beer selection always varies, but never disappoints.
The food menu is limited to pizza, but it is a very good pie of the thin crust variety. Florida state law prohibits smoking in most bars, but with the limited menu here smoking is allowed. A largely bohemian crowd here tends to enjoy the smoke with their brews, but if this turns you off they also have an outstanding outdoor environment to escape to. Lush tropical landscaping and shady scattered tables overlook the quaint Ybor streetcars regularly passing by. It really is by far the nicest outdoor patio of any bar or restaurant in the area that I know of.
Overall an excellent feature of the Tampa beer scene, I highly recommend it.

Atmosphere: Hidden little place in Ybor City with an amazing amount of charm. Visitors are greeted with a courtyard lit by neon signs with tables scattered around and a small fountain trickling peacefully in the middle. Unique signs of beer compaies are randomly scattered around the walls of the outdoor courtyard, which connects seamlessly to a covered patio area. This is connected to the main bar, which is indoors. The indoor decor is very unique, featuring a globe motif, with many unique and historic globes lining the walls and a giant old map of the world painted on the floor. Two foosball tables and an absolutely superb free jukebox serve as the main forms of entertainment, which kept me and my friends occupied for quite a while.
Service: Had a nice conversation with the bartender, who was both quick and knowledgeable about the beer he was serving. There was only one bartender at a time, which held things up a bit, but he was relatively quick with the orders coming to him. The pours were very consistent as well.
Quality: Proper glassware is generally used. Cash only, although they have an ATM inside the building. Very consistent draft pours throughout the night. Very clean place with good AC, even felt out on the patio.
Selection: One of the more thought out selections I've seen in the Tampa Bay area. I worked my way up from a Dale's Pale Ale to Lagunitas Censored to Chimay Cinq Cents to Old Rasputin, all of which were on tap, along with about 20 others. There is a wide bottle selection, consisting of mostly 750mL bottles but offering a seemingly very diverse selection of styles and breweries. There is a comprehensive menu available that shows you the draft and bottle choices available.
Food: There is a restaurant attached but it is only open during the day, so I wasn't able to sample the food there. I had a look at the menu, and it seemed like they had a good selection.
Value: I've seen better prices elsewhere in the country, but in Ybor, you can't really beat New World for their selection, service, and atmosphere. Even though I paid about a dollar more than in most places, there were also many choices available to me that I hadn't seen elsewhere in the region. In that respect I think it's a good value. The 8oz/25cL serving of the Belgians on tap were around 6$, which is definitely high... although the other offerings were more reasonable, being 4-5$ a pint, depending on the beer.
I'll be coming back here again soon. What a great bar - perfect atmosphere, great beer selection, and knowledgeable bartenders. Awesome place. I'll have to go back dring the day and try their food.
