Had an imperial pint pour of this at lunch, $3.75 (special) at Hot Lips NW in Portland's Pearl District.
A: Lovely amber color, a slightly hazy acorn-like orange-brown. 1 finger crown of light khaki head, doesn't budge for a couple minutes, remaining creamy and thick. Held to light, this shows plenty of rising carbonation. Lace lingers in drooping, jigsawed bands.
S: Sweet aroma: 'Grape Nuts' grain, which is to say it's full of toasted bread, flowery honey and a slight spice. Really, it smells of raw wort, brown sugar and cereal, maybe slightly buttery.
T: Toasted nuts and heavy grain hit upfront then a kick of bittering hops, punch of citrus. What ever toffe-like sugars existed initially get beat up by a boatload of bittering hops. Earthy, a little woody.
M: Fairly mild carbonaion, somwhat creamy. Biting hop finish leaves a lingering burnt/spicy tang. Body is 'medium' for this style.
D: At first, this was damn delicious, then a sneaking blanket of hop bitterness built and killed off the roasted nut 'amber' qualities I liked. You could do much worse with an amber ale; this is still quite tasty and flavorful, just not necessarily 'my style'. Worth a try, definitely.
