Located in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Seattle. An interesting building in the exposed industrial style...a huge wooden bar dominates with plenty of booths if you desire more seclusion. Staff was friendly, young, and hip but their beer knowledge was limited. In addition to all the elysian brews they also sell some favorites like Chimay and Rochefort, as well as rolling rock? I saw more than one person drinking rolling rock out of the bottle but whatever, obviously these people have lost the plot. The beer here is always very solid but i didn't try the food. The only drawback was a dude named "jerry" who was one of the waitresses boyfriends, this guy punched my friend within 10 minutes of being there but the manager ended up paying our bill and kicking the guy out so got to sample all the different brews on the house. I recommend the place if you are in Seattle.

Drove to the Elysian in my rental car during my recent "business trip", went on a Monday or Tuesday, I think. World series was on, so was looking for a place to sit and watch the game and have a microbrew. Parking is fairly easy here on a weeknight, but I imagine it is tough on a weekday or weekend judging by the signs in the area. The pub's exterior takes up the better part of a block, going up a hill, and the entrance is on the corner. An upper level with a dozen or so bar tables to your right, with the undulating bar that seats about 15 to the left. A lower level with a ton more tables and booths, and one big TV set up in the corner for those interested in watching whatever, which of course, was the game I was looking for.
Beers here ranged from good to fan-frickin-tastic, starting with the unbelievably delicious ESB on cask for something like $2.50. I then moved on to a sampler tray, and everything was delicious, especially the barleywine, the immortal IPA, the Bifrost winter ale, and the pilsner. The whole tray also ran my a ridiculously small amount of money. All in all I think there were about 10 of their brews on draft. They also had a wide selection of theirt bombers for sale to go, as well as some guest brews to take out, like stuff from New Glarus, and some Belgian beers, as well.
Service was very good, with my waiter continually filling my glass of water, and always spotting when I needed a new beer. Atmosphere was nice enough -- a mix of local middle-aged folks, families, younger hipsters, and one "business traveler." Didn't get to try the food, but it sounded good, and the plates that were brought out next to me looked excellent.
Like most places in Seattle, the smoking really detracted from this place, but I can't subtract points for that.
One of the must-see brewpubs when visiting Seattle IMO. Nice.

Oh, Elysian, how I am conflicted about you. You give me the big beers that I love, you make delightful seasonals and specialties, you make great IPAs, barleywines, spiced beers, strong ales. Your service is typcially fairly friendly and on the ball, your prices reasonable, especially for the Capitol Hill neighborhood, and your food is tasty enough. That pumpkin stout the other night that we drank five pitchers of? Top notch!
But, well, I have to tell you something. Please don't take it as an indication that our relationship is over: it's not. But you have to do something about the fact that, put simply, you smell bad. Really bad. The smoke is, at most hours of the day, intolerable. You need to stop smoking, take a whole lot of showers, and then we'll see if you have to replace the furnishings to avoid smelling like a smoking rathole.
Seriously, I love Elysian, but the smoke is foul, and often makes me choose to go elsehwere. The allegedly non-smoking sections are tiny and totally unseparated from the very, very smoking bar. It makes it difficult to breathe and taste the food, and comes close to ruining the taste of the beer. I try to breathe the beer in, try to taste it, and feel like I'm smoking a carton of cigarettes. Seriously, the self consciously hip Capitol Hill hipsters and yuppies need to just stop it.
The beer and food are reasonable to slightly pricey, and parking is a damn nightmare at most hours, but the beer is worth coming for. Here's to hoping that Washington voters make the Elysian (and all other bars) tolerable places on November 8!

The Elysian Brewing Companys Capitol Hill brewpub has a collection of beers on tap as diverse as its clientele. On any given night one finds goth chicks, college students, Cap Hill hipsters, and older groups all dining and taking in the exposed industrial environment. The brewery and brand is named for the final resting place for Greek heroes; the Hellenic Valhalla. Their bottle art is all in keeping with the Greek theme, but it would suit them better to follow the hip and enjoyable metal and concrete industrial theme found on their menu and throughout the brewpub itself.
Their menu is balanced and enjoyable and reasonably priced. They have a good burger, though they will cook it beyond any pink, regardless of how you ask for it.
The number, quality and variety of beers they have onsite is impressive. They have Belgians, stouts, porters, amber ales, unfiltered wheat beers, three pumpkin beers this October 2005, a barleywine, an ESB, a couple IPAs and more on tap. It would take several trips here to sample all their beers and in that time the rotating taps might change. They also have Belgians from other breweries in bottle. Superb selection. Great brewpub.
This place is a must visit for any beer enthusiast visiting Seattle. On weekend evenings, it can be a little hard to get a table without a short wait, but lunch and weeknights, there is ample seating.

On Capital Hill just a mile or so up Pike street from downtown .
From the street this place looks innocuous, it blends in nicely with the urban neighborhood. The inside is a large open area with windows along two walls. The restaurant and large bar seating areas are not separated. The atmosphere here is pretty much your typical upscale restaurant - bar ; slick wood trimming and clean.
Service speed is average to slow with most of the wait staff not very beer savvy. The food is good though appropriately pricy.
Of course the main reason you're here is for the beer. Most of Elysian's brews are on tap or bottled as are a big selection of bottled Belgians. Booze and wine are also available. The brewery's bottled beers can be purchased to go but no growler sales for some reason... probably looks tacky. I've found the best time to visit is after 9 pm when the business suit crowd has left and the locals creep in, it's a much more relaxed atmosphere.
Definitely one of better beer bars in town.

This place is a nice one. Located on Pike street the walk here from the house I was staying in on Capital Hill was very nice. The brewpub itself is nice as well. Light wood, high ceilings, and the like give this place a very open restaurant-like atmosphere. The quality of my IPA and Camden cheese steak was great and the service was fast, friendly, and with a smile. The selection of both food and beer was good, with about 8 draughts flowing, including some guest taps and seasonals. The food menu was also quite eclectic with many vegetarian options in the mix. One of a million great brewpubs in Seattle. I definately have to make a return trip to this great city!

Had dinner here in mid-June. The location is not bad, just a bit out of the center of town on a pretty hopping street. The brewery itself is in a fairly industrial three story building on a corner, with the bar on the first floor and half basement. Ceiling are high and industrial, with pipes going every which way. Tables and chairs are inexpensive metal/wood combos, but comfortable enough. A big place, there was easily enough seating for over 100.
The selection of beers wasn't great - perhaps a half a dozen, but what they had was pretty darn good. The waiter knew the offerings well, and they came in quite good shape. The food was good, if not great. Not my favorite place in Seattle, but no regrets about going.

I lived just a block and a half from The Elysian when it first opened in the mid- '90s. Back then it was a trendy upscale place planting roots in a neighborhood best known for its gay bars, poetry cafes and celebrated grunge pits. The Elysian is still a neighborhood place, but now with a nationwide reputation for champion beers. And the neighborhood is still gay and boisterous, but with increased gentrification.
Though primarily a brewpub, the Elysian features a full wet bar and a fair selection of European bottled beers. House taps include seven regulars, multiple seasonals and specials, and another seven taps from their Elysian Fields brewery in Pioneer Square. Beer designs span the gamut of popular ale and lager styles and are notable for their smooth bodies and mythologically referenced names. Quality as a whole is quite good.
Back in the day, my friends used to display their artwork here. There's still some local art to be seen, but large commercial beer flags now hang festively from the rafters. These banners and Elysian's ancient mythological themes add a gothic touch to the scenery, as do the candles and chandeliers, the long wooden tables, and the thick velvet curtains. But the better half of the scenery rests in the people watching options afforded by the Capitol Hill neighborhood. Get a table facing Pike Street if you can.
Food caters to the concurrent appeals of bar food (burgers, nachos), light fare (hummus, salads), and international styles (curry, fish tacos, panini sandwiches). It is satisfying and modestly priced. For some reason, even the water tastes good here.

Atmosphere Once you find a park, which can be tough, youll enter into what is basically one (rather large) room. The far end of the room is sunken with a few steps, where smoking is allowed. Of course the smoke fills the upstairs as well.
Quality This is an older part of Seattle, so if you like that motif youll love this place. The high ceiling is fully exposed, and everything in the pub shows it age.
Service The service started off quite slow, which was surprising because the full Saturday night wait staff was present yet the crowds hadnt come in yet.
Once we were seated though things picked up. Our waitress didnt know a whole lot about the beers, but she politely got me answers to my many questions and even introduced me to Markus the brewmaster.
Selection This was nice. They of course had every Elysian on tap known to man along with a nice selection of choice Belgians (Westmalle, several De Dulles, etc).
Food We only ordered a plate of chips and salsa so I cant expand too much on the food, but the salsa was home made and very tasty. I noticed they had loads of roasted garlic in it as well as in other menu offerings, so if youre in love with The Stinking Rose stop by here for dinner.

This is one a my favorite places to stop in when in town. I like its location and the house brews are among my favorite. Also like the fact that I have yet many more to sample, especially their various seasonal offerings. I believe I have had their "Fields" Pale and "Immortal" IPA and at the bar (my tasting notes mysteriously ended after the IPA, ?), plus, I shared a tasty pitcher of Elysian's (style?) in 2000 at local, east-coast Redbones (Boston), which sponsors a great "Northwest" craft brew month in November each year.
