Bottle to pint

Best Before: September 2012

A: Clear amber; definitely filtered. 5+ (frothy white) fingernail head on gentle/medium pour.

S: Malt. Hops. Vanilla. Oak. Smells dry.

T: Bitter. Almost no hops coming thru on this. Still bitter. Sweet malt with hint of oak and biscuit. Bitter finish.

M: Light bodied and heavy carbonation.

O: I do not think this drinks like an English IPA. It is too bitter - hops are hidden or just non-existent. Crisp and refreshing for sure...something I would drink on a hot summer day.

poured a light golden pint tried to summon a head to no avail.

the aroma of hops that was generated from the pouring of the bottle was glorious and this carried through to the taste.

a real bitter punch with a nettle aftertaste that just pours down the throat like... erm a very drinkable IPA.

Top notch and even at a more than respectable 5% I could have supped quite a few of these babies

A clear golden/brass colored beer, a white head that settles rather quickly leaving little lacing, small curtains.

The smell is hop dominated, grass, nettles,

The taste is fresh, some rather small malty startup, bread, then lemon, apples, hops, grass and grape-fruit zest.

Medium carbonation, medium bubbles, fresah and a bit coarse, dry with a medium body.

A crisp and clean IPA.

Very disappointing, and while the label makes a huge deal about the Cornish spring water, I doubt it's the culprit. Poured straw yellow, like a light lager, into a pint glass. Very little head on the pour dissipated almost immediately. Smell of flowers: daisies.

Taste was all wrong: hops fighting hops fighting malts. And a bit weak: there isn't a whole lot to taste, and what there is, well, disappoints me. It's certainly beer, but beyond that, I have a hard time classifying it as an IPA or anything else.

Will avoid. I'd rather have had a pasty.

Pours bright gold with a touch of orange and a healthy white froth that leaves little lace. Nose is appetizing Juicyfruit with grapefruit candy underneath. Caramel and tropical fruit up front with fresh hoppy C-hop citrus notes to end with a bit of saltwater taffy. Tight linger. Light, white wine crisp, a bit of stick.

While other contract brewers who brew for M&S alter their recipes, I hear that this is a straight up rebadge of Proper Job.

2nd tasting: Side-by-side sample shows this is not Proper Job at all. Paler with a denser head, less malty with more lemony Cascade, lighter, crisper, softer, easier, more American - and better!

I'm going to ignore that this is not to style, strictly, but instead call it a spectacular APA that I'd drink in preference to SNPA. Juicy, hoppy in both flavor and bitterness (St. A website says Willamette, Cascade and Chinook) balanced and oh so drinkable.

500ml bottle bought from M&S

Poured a light golden honey colour. White head poured thick and foamy with a pock marked topping then faded to light covering with thick edging... some light carbonation bubbles drift slowly to the surface... light lacing...

Aroma - Some juicy tart fruits with maybe some tropical hints (peaches, lemons and limes, pears,), quite grassy, floral honey, light sweet grainy malts, talcum powder traces, herbal, peppery hops...

Taste pretty much mirrors the aromas... decent grassy and peppery hop bitterness, quite floral, some hay, metallic hints, light biscuit malts, mouth watering fruits (lemons, apples, limes), some saltiness, faint floral honey sweetness, light chalky hints...

M&D - Fairly sharp and dry... light bodied... very quaffable and sessionble brew at 5.0%...

Overall - An excellent example of an English IPA... recommended...

Purchased at the M&S in Salisbury. As with another ale purchased that day (Hepworth's Sussex Bitter), this seems to be the latest recruit to the M&S' range of bottle-conditioned ales commissioned from regional breweries all over Britain. The ingredients include Maris Otter, Cornish spring water, Willamette, Chinook and Cascade hops. BB 03/09, served cool in a straight imperial pint glass.

A: pours a very clear, light golden hue with sporadic ascendance of large bubbles; topped with a fluffy-textured white head, scattered with some dirty yeasts.
S: very juicy and hoppy, showing stinky hays, ripe lychee-fruits (even a bit like Taiwanese lychee-blossom honey), a rather light but focused flow of grapefruit-sourness, against a thick backdrop of Maris Otter pale malts. Overall, quite rich and dense in terms of the American hoppy influence - just the way I like it.
T: the initial mouthful of bitter, delicious hoppiness shows aromatic grapefruit-zests, lychee-blossom, and a milder input of piney elements of Willamette... leading towards a chewy, mineral-textured aftertaste of bitterness and an ever-lasting aroma of rough-gristy pale malts (featuring that stinky edge of table cloths and damp raw peanuts, as any classic Maris-Otter-filled English bitter should show). The superbly chewy, medium-level bitterness is accompanied by an aromatic, almost Gewurtztraminer-featured-white-wine-like, finish. BTW, a decent level of sourness stays aside throughout the drink.
M&D: utterly refreshing with abundant soft fizziness on the palate, while the medium body holds very well until the end. From the flavour profile, I would say this is more line with the newly-defined "English Golden Bitter/Ale", with an American twist of course. All in all, a delicious golden bitter bursting with hops, rendered all the more enjoyable thanks to the successful bottle-conditioning efforts of this marvellous brewery in Southwest England~~

In bottle form, purchased from Marks and Spencer.

The beer poured a dark golden colour with a white head, that reduced to a 1mm film. A very bitter hoppy scent with a good deal of citrus fruit in the nose.

A very bitter taste, initially of hops followed by a burst of bitter fruitiness. This lingers as an aftertaste that is also quite dry. A thick bodied beer that is pleasant to taste, but a bit too heavy and bitter for my taste buds to have more than a couple.
