Note: This beer is brewed with barley, wheat, rye, and spelt, an obscure old-world grain. It doesn't fit any one style very well, but it's too dark to be a Hefeweizen and too light to be a Dunkel Weizen... so I'm entering it as a Roggenbier. Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Appearance: Hazy, kinda muddy amber-brown, a bit brighter than your average Dunkel Weizen. Head is stucco-off white and meringuey with a good retention.
Smell: Distinct earthy, smoky, sort of oily and rubbery carburetor-ish spice of rye mingled with the sweetness of barley and wheat, plus a fresh sweet corn-esque tone that must be spelt. Toasty and funky in general, with an understated Bavarian hop aroma.
Taste: The nutty earthiness of rye, the sweetness of barley, and the light tang of wheat tied nicely together in a mild and balanced beer. Toasty and bready with some banana notes from the yeast. Finish is very clean, leaving just a trace of hop bitterness and rye funk.
Mouthfeel: Smooth, light-to-medium bodied with soft, refined carbonation. Mild but pleasant, much like the flavor.
Drinkability: This is a pleasant and unusual beer that goes down easy and offers many interesting flavors. It's nice to see a Japanese brewery experimenting like this.
