The pour crests at about a finger’s worth of rich dark foam, subsides swiftly down to a consistent surface coating then finally pulls away to the glass sides, the lacing is wispy and without stickiness. The liquid is a super-clean opaque black, hints of brown to yellow at the glass bottom and rims, no visible bubbles. The nose consists mostly of roasted cocoa, sweet baked bread, anise, caramel and cola bean, trace of plum, actually comes off angular and dry so that any milkiness seems lost in the shuffle, not overly roasted but lifts well. Medium-bodied while on the firm and muscular side, not softly textured. The carbonation is light, however, it does last fully through each sip. Again, not that milky per se more crisper cocoa, mocha to coffee notes along with cola, orange peel, molasses crisp and pine. Given the higher level of roast, harder to discern clearly the hoppy bite but one suspects it is higher than usual for the category. Mix of black fruits sweeten the mid-palate. Overall, falls on the dry side so there’s no real naturally sweet length. Fairly sessionable and neutral enough to be versatile at the dinner table. Probably would benefit from slightly more sweetness and general liveliness.

12oz undated bottle poured into a Bell's snifter and consumed today, 5/17/2013. Thanks to BarrytheBear for throwing it in as an extra.
Aroma: Thick, smokey and sweet all at once. Smoked malts are pretty dominant but there is a bittersweet background that reminds me of bitter black licorice. Fairly interesting and strong nose that doesn't particularly blow me away. (3.5)
Colour: Looks nice- pours a thick viscous cola brown body with a 1cm brown head that disappears quickly into nothingness, not even a film or collar. It does leave a very thin, fine lacing- it's like condensation but not quite. Pretty interesting looking beer and that's about it. (4)
Flavour: Decent- lots of smoke up front, some roasted malts like coffee and milk chocolate, followed by a bitter licorice aftertaste. Fairly interesting flavour profile, especially the smoke. However I don't think the bitter licorice kick at the end really does favours for this milk stout. It's got the roast malts of a stout but it's more bitter than sweet on the end. (3.5)
Mouthfeel: Very, very creamy and smooth experience. Thicker side of medium body, well carbonated. Aftertaste is bittersweet black licorice that lingers a while, almost a little unpleasantly so. But props to the brewer for the mouthfeel on this beer. (4)
Overall: Interesting take on the milk stout- if you like them a bit more bittersweet than lactose sweet, this is a solid brew to try. I probably wouldn't pick this one up again because I'm a guy who likes his milk stouts in the latter category. Enjoyed trying this one though! (3.5)

Dark dark brown. Toffee colored head that fades pretty quickly. Any lacing slides back down the glass pretty quickly. Raw grains in the nose, some chocolate also. Little bit of caramel ducking beneath the surface. Getting some toasted aromas also. Taste- Lots of roasted flavors. Good ammount of coffee, some milk chocolate. Medium body, kind of a light, watery body and mouthfeel, for a stout. Little creaminess. Pretty smooth drinker, almost too smooth. Leaves very little aftertaste. Definitly a ok beer, but kind of a little bland. This could be considered a session stout in my book, just not sure I like it enough to want to make a session out of it!
