I love IPAs, but more importantly, I love a good IPA, and as this style’s popularity continues to grow it seems that any brewery can easily pump out an average IPA. LaConner is no different. Theirs is a refreshing and tasty replication of the style, but it lacks personality. Nothing particularly stands out: bitter, grapefruit rind (not grapefruit), nothing floral, resiny, or fruity. Average all around.

Tried at the brewery in La Conner. Called NW IPA and ABV listed as 6.8.

This is an old-school american IPA.
The aroma & taste is mainly grapefruit juice, the bitterness is fairly modest by todays standards (not much more bitterness than their pale, but this doesn't have much residual malt sweetness to back it up). Blonde-yellow in colour, topped by a white head, some retention, great lacing.
Well-attenuated with a crisp, dry finish.
Like cascade hops?

IPA is a golden yellow color with a spice aroma. It follows with a pretty big ginger hop with a light note of peaches or apricots in the finish. Again it's fairly mellow with a subdued bitterness but interesting flavor. A pretty easy drinking IPA with good enough flavors to think about another one instead of moving on to something else.

After a recent visit, (we've heard the beers are improving, after falling far from their past high glories) afriend tried this beer on tap. I took a taste and the beer popped with fresh, bright, hop flavor. Lots of citrus and pine. So we bought a sixer to split. And maybe this bottle is old, (there's no date code) but it's not the beer we had on tap.
As it is, this average IPA is still better than it has been the past few years, but still a long way from it's past highs. If you're visiting the area for tulip season, or to visit the Shoppes and galleries, a stop at the pub for the brews on tap would be worthwhile, but these bottles aren't anything special.

It's been awhile since I last encountered an IPA of this particular styling. This is the grassy, green-herbal variety that sports an herbal tonic quality. It's mildly suggestive of tomato vines. The beer is clear copper with minimal foam and leaves some yeast residue in the bottle. A worthy ale, but I used to drink this years ago when it was more commonly available on draught and remember it as more flowery and bright.

Appearance: Cloudy apricot color with a billowy head that provides sheets of lace as it descends
Smell: Pink grapefruit with a hint of pineapple
Taste: Bready, up front, with a blast of grapefruity bitterness that develops sweet pineapple undertones by mid-palate; after the swallow, the citrus dominates the finish but the sweetness still lingers
Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation
Drinkability: A very nice IPA, although I would prefer a bit more on grapefruit and a bit less bread and pineapple; still, a nice example of the NW style

I was served a pint from the tap at the LaConner brewpub.
A: It poured a hazy dark orange body with a bone white head of about one and one-half finger. The head receded at a modest pace leaving a ring around the collar and supporting a layered lacing.
S: It had a noticeable hop profile that included piney and citrusy hops, as well as an underlying toasted malt base. This was a signiture IPA...floral hops.
T: There was a brief presence of sweet, creamy malts on the tongue that was quickly swept away by the citrusy hops (lemons, tangy oranges and grapefruit). It was moderately carbonated and finished clean and dry with no sour aftertaste.
M: It was a creamy medium bodied beer with a dry finish and clean aftertaste.
D: It is a pleasant IPA that packs a wallop. It is a decent session beer that may be a bit on the heavy side (body and ABV) to last over a long session.

Appearance: Standard IPA. Out of the bottle I let it come up to temperature. It poured with a nice 2 finger head. Nice pale yellow colour.
Smell: Very citrusy. Obviously, lots of hop aromas. Almost overpowering. Smells to me like a Cascade hop bomb,
Taste: This beer turned out to be quite bitter. I found that the malt backbone that a lot of other IPA's have was kind of lacking in this beer. The only thing that provided some sweetness was the high alcohol content.
Mouthfeel: Bitter. Very bitter. Not sure if that is a tasting note or a mouthfeel note, but either way, it is almost overpowering on the tongue. The citrusy aftertaste lingers for quite a while. Almost like an orange peel.
Drinkability: Well I bought this in a 6 pack and was super excited to drink it. After the first one, I just didn't really feel like drinking another. There were a lot of bitter hop oils that really just didn't make me want to keep drinking. The 6 pack lasted me almost 2 months. I have to say, however, by limiting myself to just one at a time, it made this beer overall enjoyable for what it is. A HOP BOMB. I can't imagine what the Bottleworks version with the raw hop cone would taste like.
I will say this was an enjoyable beer because in my mind it was really intense. An extreme beer, if you will. In Vancouver, we have limited access to the American west coast hop bombs, so perhaps my pallate just isn't ready for this type of beer. I'd defininately buy it again just for the extreme nature of the beer.

Had this on tap at LaConnor. Served waaay too cold and in a heavily frosted shaker pint. Little lacing and absolutely no head with a hazy amber color. I wrapped my hands around the pint until it warmed up before I rated it. More grapefruit than citrus/floral aroma. Nothing spectacular about the taste, but a good pine aftertaste that was a bit different. Overall, a pretty good representation of the style, but why do they serve it so damn cold?

Hazy golden color. I poured pretty aggressively down the middle of the glass and barely saw a sheet of head. There's very faint specks of lacing.
Great smell. Wonderful leafy hop smell mixed with heavy malt. Well balanced though.
The taste is the same with more of a fruity hop taste. Hoppy dry finish. Smooth feel.
When I poured this beer, I thought it had gone bad but it was only that I had left it in the fridge for longer than I thought and it was simply too cold. Once this beer warmed up some, I found it was delicious. Thanks to BeerBeing (I believe) for this one.

Thanks to hopdog for this...
Appears a hazy orange with a small white head and spotty lacing around the glass.
Smell is of buttery richness with mild orange.
Taste is of a buttery mess with some citrus trying to come through. Very muddled version of an IPA.
Mouthfeel is watery and thin.
Why the great dropoff from the bottleworks to this? What the heck went wrong?
