I already did a review on this place, but since then I've become a regular. I have to say the selection is great, 50 beers on draft including a few nitros and on top of that that 2 casks. They also have a good bottle list usually somewhere around 100 beers. The service is great, especially if the beverage coordinator is there, Dave, he is a certified cicerone, but the whole staff is pretty knowledgeable on beer. Plus its always nice to occasionally have the owner Ivan pour your beer for you. They recently hired a new cook, who re-did most of there food, and he did a damn good job. So overall if your in north county San Diego and a beer lover this is a English style pub you must stop at.

One of the best pubs/beer bars in California. Period. Their fifty or so taps are always rotating, and they don't put anything on tap that isn't high quality or unique, and will frequently put beers on that are in limited quantities, and this has no effect on their prices, which are incredibly affordable. Their bottle list is also something cool to check out if your looking for something in particular, and some can even be taken home for consumption. The food is excellent, especially the burgers and their Reuben, and the staff is always friendly and helpful. And, most importantly ,the vibe is laid back, unpretentious, and kind of old school. I highly, highly recommend this place. However, be warned that it can get rather noisy on the weekends at night.

The look of the pub is fairly ordinary, which several televisions displaying sports games, random pictures on the wall, presenting a very casual atmosphere the belies how very great the food and beer is.
The tap list is exceptional. I spied five different vintage beers, and there are enough fresh IPAs to make any hop-head feel in heaven. There's also an extensive whiskey list if that is your fancy.
Service was great. We scored free desert because a friend on mine spilled ketchup on her pants. Service was always prompt despite being very busy.
The food is also exceptional. A simple item like Grilled Cheese is made delicately with gourmet ingredients. There's a good mix of items around ten dollars, and more expensive choices.

Churchill's is a comfortable, relaxed English-style pub with a pool table, darts, indoor, outdoor, and barstool seating. There's often lively discussion at the bar, a quiet corner to read in, a game on TV, or welcoming firepits outside, whichever sounds best to you. Now that the men's bathroom door is fixed, the atmosphere is perfect.
Clean tap lines. 2 casks. 50 rotating taps, always with a good assortment of locals, other domestics, seasonals, and a few Belgians. There is (almost) always Ballast Point Sculpin and a Russian River hop-forward beer on tap, whether it be Pliny the Elder, Blind Pig, or the underrated, though delicious, Russian River IPA. Terrific bottle list with reasonable prices. Full assortment of spirits as well, including a long list of bourbons/whiskeys.
The staff is knowledgeable, efficient, and personable. I've always received outstanding service.
Outstanding selection. I'm holding off on giving a 5 until they routinely offer Alpine beers on tap. A place that wants to be deemed San Diego's finest beer bar needs to carry San Diego's finest IPAs.
The food is high-quality, affordable, and delicious, with rotating specials daily. The chef is innovative and skilled. Everything on the menu I've had is terrific, and the fries (or chips) are the best in the city, as far as I'm concerned.
Reasonable/typical San Diego pub prices. They do offer all beers in 4oz. taster glasses upon request, which I find especially appropriate for (pricier) beers I'm unfamiliar with.
Also, there's Churchill's Finest Hour bottles available year-round. What's not to love about that?

Alright, in the interest of full disclosure I will say up front that I am a bit biased. Churchill's is my "local" and so I have self-interest in its success. However I feel my opinion is objective and so will post with the above caveat duly noted...
Here is the long and short of it...
Churchill's is a local Pub & Grille. It is clean but not overly fancy. Comfortable but not lavish. It has a bar area, dining room/lounge as well as an outside beer garden. It does not try to be or do anything it is not. In short it is not a "poser" pub but a real bar with a strong respect for the UK and continental offerings.
That said here is what impresses me about Churchill's and subsequently why they continue to earn my business:
I am there at least once but usually 2-3 times a week. There is a very loyal and strong following of patrons who travelled "across the pond" and now reside here that frequent almost daily. I can name many of them and they range mostly from England, Ireland with the occasional Scot or two and even the continent group in to watch a match on the multiple monitors between Croatia and Serbia. There are even familys from across that bring in the young ones for dinner and table games. You can't put up a pub sign and call it atmosphere anything like having a host of regulars who know their pubs...
As for the Beers; They advertise 18 on tap but I believe there are actually 19 at the moment. As previously mentioned there are the "usual suspects" like Bass, Guiness, Boddington's, Stella etc. etc. etc. however that is just the start of it. Unlike other establishments, Churchill's is looking for great beer, not just what sells and comes from "over there". For example there are locals like: Firehouse Ale, Karl Strauss Red Trolley and at least one or two from Stone as well.
Churchill's has a commitment to bring in cask ales whenever they can with a goal of at least one a month. In fact last night (12/1) they tapped the one and only "Oaked" Double Bastard that Stone Brewing released. That's right---the only one there was or will be this year. Hand pumped it was gone within four hours and enjoyed by as enthusiastic crowd as can be had. I was in heaven. And if that doesn't say something, how about this. There were other brewers there as well just to sample such a fine offering. This was community at its finest.
Interested in a Hefeweizen? they carry three... Or perhaps a draft cider, you bet...or...for a change how about a nice Lambic Framboise? Also three I believe in bottles of course. Why? because in addition to all the drafts offered they also have an extensive variety of bottled beers and varietals. But the trick is that each one is hand selected by the Proprietor and only offered if he feels it will appeal to his customers. As a true beer lover himself he ensures that you are getting the best of what can be offered and available. even if only for four hours like the casked Stone DB
Food...ahhh the food. I have always been impressed by the food at Churchill's so one day I started asking questions. having a background in food service I new the questions to ask to see how they bought and prepared their products. I was amazed...truly...when after asking about "portion packs", "frozen single serve" and such I found that they make everything there in their own kitchen. Prime Rib on the weekends and Fish & Chips to die for. Portions enough for two and raves are always heard. When you have a salty Brit ramble in at 2:00 P.M. for his "All Day" English Breakfast, hoist a pint and then without solicitation say, "These Bangers are Spot On", you know you have something. I try and have lunch there at least once a week...And there is in fact variety. And like the others not just "heat & serve" but freshly prepared items that can handle most if not all pallets and desires. You won't go hungry...
So if you want a fancy storefront or a atmospheret more like a Chili's or Applebee's there are others to be found. But if you want a truly quaint "local" that has a true appreciation for beer and food then you might stop in for a pint, or two... Don't expect to much and you won't be dissapointed. Like any true "local" pub you have to be prepared to walk in and introduce yourself. but once you do you will not find a nicer bunch either behind or in front of the bar. The pub experience is not just what they offer but what you make of it and Churchill's has the ingredients to make the best of it.
And yes, there's pool and real Dart's too. League Darts...
FYI...parking is limted out front but there is a side lot also. After five you can also park in the lots directly behind the pub as well.

A - Doesn't look like much from the outside, almost displeasing to someone who doesn't know any better because of the reputation, but the inside is your typical pseudo-English pub in America. Highly clad with antiqued wood, a little dark and smaller than one would imagine for having such a large beer selection. But the people who work there make the place great and everyone there is always in a good mood. Not a lot of fraternity boys/college scene ordering shots of jager, etc. but most people are there to hang out, enjoy some pints and have a good time.
Q - Always have a hard time with this category...quality of the building, quality of the ownership, quality of the experience, quality of what? If it's a combination of all the aforementioned, then the place usually has me leaving with a good experience. No establishment is perfect, once I stopped getting jabbed in the head by pool cues while trying to eat dinner it was much better, but now just avoid sitting next to the billiards at night or you'll feel like you're in a constant wooden stick sword fight.
S - Can't speak highly enough about the staff. I'm always greeted by at least 1 person as soon as I walk in and the bartenders are quick to ask for your drink order if you're in the bar. If eating dinner the staff is very knowledgeable about the menu AND the beer and always make sure that you have everything you need without being intrusive. The bartenders aren't you're typical "I'm cooler than you because I can pour beer in a glass from a tap" but can constantly be found having social conversation/joking with bar-folk while getting their job done at the same time.
S - As most know, the beer list is what puts this place on the map. Something like 51 taps and 2 casks going at all times and constantly rotating. There are usually several high quality IPA/IIPA on tap including The Pupil or Pliny. Everything from BA stouts, sours, flanders reds, local beers, etc. What truly makes it great is the exclusivity Churchill's shares with few other establishments in San Diego and they get access to rare kegs, casks or beers made specifically for the pub. But like most people say...where are the Alpine beers??
F - Typical pub food menu items, although excellently executed, don't walk in hoping to get some small plate/gourmet, white table cloth type entrees. The chef is a master of his craft (often wonder how they keep him around) but I'm glad they do. Every now and then they'll do a special/ticketed/limited dinner with a brewery and prepare a special menu to compliment said brewery's beer, they are fantastic. There's a few "vegan" menu options (it's my knowledge that they use the same fryers/oil/pots/pans for the vegan items as the regular entrees) but a beer bar/pub with "vegan" food is kind of an oxymoron IMO.
V - Overall I very much enjoy going to Churchill's. I appreciate the low volume of people at the bar compared to other establishments around San Diego county, rarely have to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with bros to get a beer. I always enjoy myself and love sharing stories, catching up with friends in a relaxing atmosphere where I never feel pressured or rushed while inside. I'm treated how I would treat others and feel very welcome at Churchill's....now get more kegs of Churchill X ASAP.

If you like beer, especially good beer, then you'll love Churchill's. One of the best rotating selection of craft beers in San Diego by far, truly a beer aficionado's dream. Can you say 50 taps and 2 casks, not to mention amazing selection of bottled beer as well. Oh for those not in to beer, they do have a full bar.
Scotch egg (hard boiled egg wrapped in sausage meat), homemade potato crisps sprinkled with seasoning, and Cornish pasty are some of my favorite munchies. But my other favorite is the fresh and delicious fish and chips. The cooked to order batter emerges golden brown and the crispy coating compliments the flaky fish inside so perfectly, without being greasy or overwhelming. I might even say that the fish and chips might be one of the best in San Diego county. If you know something better, you should let me know!
I think one of the best part about Churchill's besides great selection of beer and food is that the bar staffs are not only knowledgeable but also friendly, and personable. We all have experienced the high and mighty beer snob jerk bartenders but never at Chruchill's. If you lack experience with beer other than the macro brewery lagers, then ask the bartender and the friendly regulars as they will be happy to offer advice on the various beers.
Highly recommended, but don't let me be the judge. See for your self and you will soon learn that you have been missing out.

Thanks to BA, blitheringidiot found this place about two miles from our hotel. Parking is awful. The place has the English pub thing down pat. Darts, pool, and foozball tables are available for play. Great bottle list with East Coast as well as West Coast gems. Tap list was impressive with a focus on SoCal beer as well as typical pub beer. Service was very good & our waitress was very funny. She also seemed to know by name many of the customers which is always a great sign. The food was outstanding: our table of 6 all were very pleased by the grub as well as stuffed. Overall, a great place which I would highly recommend. Don't overlook this place on a SoCal beer tour.

OK what can i say this place is topnotch the whole way through. Beer selection incredible food awesome customer service even better. When going to a lot of craft beer spots i always think they loose sight on the 2 most important things Beer and Service. This place is on it they have you covered. 50 taps i thin and a good little bottle selection they also have an outdoor patio with fire pits also a nice touch. Its in North County but well worth the drive. This place will take the Pepsi challenge with the best of em. Highly recommend. Oh ya did i mention i dont think they have a draft over $5....

Great British Pub atmosphere with darts and pool tables. Nice outdoor patio with fire pits for those cool nights. Only negative is that parking isn't great. This place is a phenomenal balance of awesome food and awesome beer. During the most recent Sand Diego Beer Week, there was a compelling reason to go to Churchill's every night...and I went almost every night. The food is outstanding. They have their standard menu of British Pub fare which is excellently cooked. They also have a menu of several different specials. Their food is always top notch. The beer selection is out of this world. They probably have over 50 taps, 2 casks, and one of the best bottle selections in San Diego. Every time I go, there are several beers on tap that I have never seen before: a unique twists on an old favorite, or a great vintage stashed away for a while. They frequently have special menus for holidays and beer dinner pairings. This is a phenomenal place.
