I almost fell like i should review this beer twice--my initial take and then where i netted out!

Thr aroma immediately said this was a sour - and i wasn't expecting that. Though I do like sours so it wasn't a bad thing.

Lots of carbonation from the get-go--almost champagne like.

The taste threw me for a loop, no doubt about it. I couldn't place my finger on it - a funk of sorts; maybe musty. Had a dryness to it as well. My initial reaction was "interesting...I can drink it down but dont think I'd get it again."

But as I honored my 'obligation' to finish it, something happened-- I liked it lots. The mustiness morphed somewhat into an musty-earthiness. And sour apples too.

I didn't get much alcohol, for good or worse.

I'd love to have this with some sushi--something tells me it would go great with albacore...

A - Hazy amber-brown with a finger of frothy tannish-khaki head. Fades normal.

S - Sweet caramel malts, Belgian yeast,. spices, sake, oak, vanilla, and a bit of booze.

T - Sweet dark caramel malts, Belgian yeast, oak, sake, Belgian yeast, some spices, bit of vanilla and booze.

M - Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation. Smooth with a sweet warming finish.

D - Nicely balanced and the sake flavors are a nice touch.

Pours a cloudy, copper color. 1/2 inch head of a white color. Great retention and great lacing. Smells of sweet malt, slight spice, hops, hint of roasted malt, hint of citrus, and a hint of alcohol. Fits the style of a Belgian Strong Dark Ale. Mouth feel is sharp, crisp, dry, and has a average carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, hint of roasted malt, citrus hops, hops, hint of sugar, and a hint of rice. Overall, good appearance, aroma, and decent body.
