A- Body is deep cola brown. The head fizzled out before I was even done pouring. I got some light colored chunks in mine as well. This looks like a pop rather than a beer, the consistency looks like water.

S- Well at least it smells like beer, as mild as it may be. Smells a bit like sour milk actually. The roasty aromas are so mild and really difficult to pull out. There's a bit of chocolate as well.

T- Again, it's just so plain and boring. Nothing really stands out. Just like the nose.

M- I just can't get over how thin this is, feels absolutely nothing like how this style should be.

D- It's to bad I got 3 more of these, I won't be drinking them.

12oz bottle into pint glass.

A: Dark Opaque Hue, Passes No Light, Off White Head Ring, Some Lacing

S: Gritty Chocolate Malts, Mild Lactose, Mild Coffee

T: Mild Dark Malts, Mild Chocolate

M: Average Carbonation, Medium Bodied, Mild Gritty, Mildly Watery

Overall, other than the nose of mild, gritty lactose sugar, this just resembles a mild stout with very little flavor or quality.

Appearance: Silky pour texture. Appears very dark in the glass, on the side of a heavy brown over a pitch blackness. Thin lacing throughout. Very low carbonation.

Smell: I thought the lacto sugar added in this brew came off very abrasive. Incredibly tart and bitter, made me hesitate taking a drink. Some decent malt and dark fruit, but the offensive sugar accents make this very undesirable.

Taste: The sugar accents are better here but still not great. A decent malt caramel front of this beer gets quickly taken over by a heavy creamy, milk, daily, and cheap sugar. But despite what is in this beer the body is way too light. The lingering tacky sugar presence creates a less then enjoyable aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: Light with a artificial sugar feeling. Not great.

Overall: I was really disappointed with this brew. I didn't really have high expectations and those were definitely not close to being met. But I've enjoyed the other Kiuchi beers so I won't hold this miss against them.

Reviewed from notes. Enjoyed on 2/9/2013 out of a standard short brown bottle with no discernible freshness date. Poured into a stein mug.

Appearance - Pours a dark drip coffee color with a tan one-finger head. The head dissipates very quickly, leaving just a rim of foam around the edge. There was a lot more sediment in the bottom of the bottle than I would have expected for a milk stout.

Aroma - Probably the most enjoyable part of the beer, intensive smell of cocoa nibs, roastiness and a very strong--almost unbalanced--undertone of brown rice. The rice smell would be interesting if it wasn't so strong. Really overpowers the much more pleasant cocoa.

Taste - Just not that appealing, unfortunately. The entire taste is almost watery, like it's diluted or partial strength or really old. Something isn't quite right. There is a sweetness throughout, but it's an artificial-tasting sweetness, like when you add sweetener to bad coffee. If it wasn't for the aroma and color, this one wouldn't scream "stout" to me. It just isn't that stout, to make a bad pun.

Mouthfeel - very negatively affected by the diluted-tasting nature of the beer. It just doesn't seem to have any heft or body to it. The aftertaste isn't bad--notes of fresh biscuits.

Overall, the Kiuchi Brewery makes other beers that are much, much better than this one. Unfortunately, none of them are stouts, if that is what you're looking for.

Thought it would be way better. Bottle is super cool, more so than the one shown here. I was kind of a sucker, I lived in Japan, dig owls, like stouts and the milk infusion sounded interesting. Was fine but not worth $11.00 for a 22oz. Even taste, not as creamy as a Guinness. I'd pick it if it had an average price... on an average night.

Black, very little bubbles, lightly sweet.

A- deep dark ebony with rosewood highlights. Foamy fizzly khaki colored head is lively as it settles and holds at a thick disk with some minor spotty lace.

S- mild aroma with coffee, cocoa, and a tart lactic strawberries and balsamic vinegar edge. Almost lemony in a way. Not bad tho. Not very complex either.

T- sweet stout my ass. This is like coffee with a shot of vinegar in it. Not working for me at all. Finishes with the same odd combination of flavor.

MF- on the light end of medium and fizzy. Like a dry Irish stout. Scratchy feeling.

D- the opposite of what I expected, not at all like a milk stout. The sourness with the roasted grains is a bad combination in my opinion. I don't think I can finish this one.

Poured into a Lucifer snifter. Pours a very dark brown, appearing black in the glass. Thin light brown head dissipates quickly to a ring around the glass. Mild, malty aroma with roast and biscuit malt and hints of chocolate and dry grass. Light flavor of malt, slight roasted malt, light chocolate and a hint of coffee. Light bodied. Light and attenuated flavor, which is expected from this light ABV stout. A pleasant, lightly flavored stout. I've probably moved on past this light a flavor in beer, but this seems nicely made for its intent. Closer to a light porter than a stout.

Poured into a pint glass. Pours very dark brown (almost black) with a thick tan head that dissipates rather quickly. The aroma is of mild coffee with some chocolate and dark roasted malts. It smells slightly sweet. The flavor of this beer follows the nose. The coffee notes are a little more prominent with the chocolate notes receding into the background. The malt notes add to the slight roastiness of this beer. There's some slight sweetness here too. The body is light with moderate carbonation. The beer is smooth and very drinkable. It's a bit thin for the style, coming across as more of a porter. It seems like this beer accomplishes what it sets out to do. It's a good beer that's worth trying if you don't mind the price tag.
