This beer is retired; no longer brewed.
More Helles, Less Bock is an easy-drinking lager that blurs the lines between Helles, Bock and Maibock styles. At 5.6% ABV, 21 IBU, and light straw color, Scratch #69 portrays itself as a Helles; but inside the glass lurks a more complex beer reminiscent of the Bock style. Aromatic toasted chestnuts and hints of honeysuckle flower present themselves before the first sip. After tasting More Helles, Less Bock you will immediately want more. The floor-malted barley gives an earthy flavor that pairs with the hints of bitterness from Tradition. The finish is sweet and malty, yet still refreshing; a light filtration adds bread notes at the end.

Freshness: Not indicated
Packaging: 12 oz. brown bottle, pry-cap
Glassware: Willi Becher
Purchased: Received in a trade
A: Clear straw yellow beer topped by a white head 2 fingers high. Very good retention, with a nice ring of lace sticking to the glass.
S: Pale bready malts and a light banana fruitiness make for sweet aromas. Also get some floral hops.
T: Sweet, fruity and malty, with low bitterness. Very tasty
M: Moderately carbonated and a medium body. The finish is bready, with some vegetable aftertaste and a light amount of bitterness.
O: Very refreshing lager that I enjoyed.
Thanks to merc7186 for this one!

Bottle from Capone's. Starts out more bock, than finishes more helles. Pleasant enough than finishes more drinkable. A decent beer, but makes me long for something more hoppy, please. Medium yellow coloured body, a little lace. Good carbonation. Smooth, well rounded.

I poured this into a pint glass, it has a yellow straw colored body, with not head or lace to it. The smell has a scent of grain to it with a carmel hint. The taste up front is sweet and malty almost like carmel, then a nice floral taste comes into play. The mouth feel is really good, very little after taste on the tongue and overall this is a really good combination of style and is a nice and easy drinker.

Clear light golden in color with a nice crisp white head that laces nicely even though it dissipated rather quickly.
Predominant grain aromas coming off this one, not my favorite smell, it reminds me of cereal. But the saving grace is the tiny little bit of caramel that slips in on the nose. It makes it bearable for me.
Upfront I was hit with a blast of caramel, which quickly lent way to a nice floral flavor and then the aftertaste was back to caramel. Delicious! It is drying, light-bodied, crisp, and overall a joy to drink.

On tap at Hudson St. stackhouse the other day.
The beer pours a solid gold color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is fairly attractive as well, showcasing bread dough, honey and light dry citrus. The flavor profile replicates the nose pretty closely in this lightly sweet lager, and the mouthfeel is slick, smooth, medium bodied and lightly bitter on the finish. The finish is otherwise very clean, polished and refreshing in this nicely crafted beer, and alcohol is completely undetectable.
Quite drinkable and enjoyable... just wish there was a bit more going on.

Appearance: Gold color, slight head, mild cabonation, clear.
Smell: Slightly nutty and clean
Taste: Malty with a slight aftertaste
Mouthfeel: Smooth with a crisp finish
Overall: Very nice Maibock which had an alcohol warming on the way down. I love that Troegs can branch out and attempt German-style lagers. This was very good, and I would try again.

A - Not very impressive head a very thin layer, lacing is decent. Color is as expected for a Helles clear bright yellow.
S - Smells like roasted nuts, touch of caramel malts, and honey/flowers.
T - Taste is sweet and nutty with fruity tones of honey and lavender flowers. I really like how it's sweet but grain forward. Tasty stuff.
M - Medium bodied and kind of syrup like but goes down smooth.
Overall I was kind of disappointed at first to find this bock a touch light but it is a nice mix of styles and worth a try.

12oz bottle, 69 – Bock. Thanks for the extra Stormking47.
A: Pours a very light amber with golden highlights beneath a couple fingers of white active head. Head slowly faded into a soft thick film. Very active carbonation, patchy lace.
S: Lots of sweet malts, sweet smelling, hints of honey, with roasted grains and lager yeast as well.
T: Sweet again with a dominant grain taste. Sweet malts, caramel, toast, honey, lemon and lager yeast fill my palate. Finish is syrupy but not cloying, and the aftertaste is sweet and lightly spicy.
M: Smooth and very soft carbonation, medium-full body, chewy slick mouthfeel.
O: Smooth and sweet, slick and rich. Not a bad drink at all. Thank Josh.

I grabbed one of these from the tasting room on the way out the door.
Served in a Mad Elf snifter.
A: Poured out a nearly crystal clear, soft orange color, with about a finger or so head that clung to the glass like Spider-Man.
S: Faint, but I guess that's not what this beer is about anyway. Nice sweet, sourdough quality that encased the malt for further use on the taste buds.
T: Liquid bread in a glass IMO. Not sure why lots don't dig this, but I loved it! Sweet, but only in an organic sort of way, with no saturation of any kind. This is very "beery," which I thought was a welcome change.
M: Liquidy, but please don't confuse that with "watery." This wasn't meant to be "snot-like"... it's supposed to be ALMOST a session beer. In that regard, I dug the sweetness, lacing, taste lingering, etc.
O: If a person just drank a couple Imperial Stouts right before this, they'll hate it. However, I kept going back for more and more. I REALLY liked it!

First has: on tap at TJ's, Paoli, PA
Clear, golden-straw pour with a small white head; moderate retention and lacing. Aroma wasn't too strong or distinctive, toasted grains, sweet malts, nutty. More of the same in the taste, toasted grains, malts, a touch of honey, bready, lightly citrusy, and a mild hop bitterness. Light-medium body, nice, but probably nothing I'd go back for.

I had this on-tap at Max's. Served in a tasting glass.
Appearance: The beer pours a clear golden straw color with a small layer of off white head that goes away quickly.
Smell: Very malty. Lots of grain and some mild fruity grape notes.
Taste: This beer is very malt forward and full of bready notes. There is some grape sweetness going on here too. Mildly bitter in the second half of the sip, but that fades in the finish.
Mouthfeel: Medium body with fluffy carbonation and a slightly dry finish.
Overall: This bock was good but rather unremarkable. I don't think I would want another.
