Notes:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.
Danny’s IPA was brewed to honor Danny Glover, our good friend who passed away earlier this year. Dubbed Danny’s IPA, this Black IPA is modeled after Danny’s favorite beer, Nugget Nectar. It clocks in at 7.0% ABV and 100 IBUs. Per John Trogner III, “If anyone says it’s not hoppy enough, punch them in the face.” Rotten grapefruit flavors from Columbus hops dominate Scratch #63. The dry-hopping rate is nearly one pound per barrel creating a dank, piney aroma that gives way to a grassy finish. This beer was dry hopped at a rate of 1.25 lbs. per barrel, more than two times the rate of Nugget Nectar. Tröegs Brewery will donate $10 from every case of Danny’s IPA sold out of the brewery in Hershey to the Gift of Life donation program.

Picked up at Capone's ($4.50/bottle)
Brewed in memory of Danny Glover.
Supposedly this is a black version of Nugget Nectar.
Dark brown and chestnut hued in color. Solid tan head that leaves lacing all over the glass! Serious head retention that stays around for the entire beer. Simply a beautiful Black IPA.
The aroma is soft with a gentle roastiness that is mixed up with a serious herbal hoppiness. Piney, minty, just packed with hops.
Creamy head with a velvety smooth texture. Very mild (for a Black IPA) with notes of mocha, cream, milk chocolate and floral hops. The bitterness really pops in the finish. Overall, a mild flavored beer, but pleasant.
Again, fairly light bodied for the style and for 7% abv. The carbonation is soft and smooth.
It tastes like a session beer. A delicious session beer. It's not. Careful with this one...

BARLEY Pils, Munich, Crystal, Midnight Wheat
Hints of caramel come from the Crystal malt; the Midnight Wheat gives a dark black color and a hint of roast without the astringency associated with other roasted malts.

Pours a fairly dark black with slightly brown edges and a big, fluffy mocha head that never settles, always leaving a huge cap of foam. I can see the Nugget Nectar comparison, big and dank hop aromas with a substantial roasted malt and bitter chocolate backbone. Really hoppy. Taste is equally bitter and hoppy, with tons of pithy grapefruit rind, dark chocolate, espresso coffee beans, and pine resin. Surprisingly light and drinkable, despite the dark malt profile and decent ABV. Mouthfeel is smooth and creamy, with a touch over medium-bodied and good carbonation. Overall a pretty nice "Black IPA" that goes to an amazing cause. Honored to have tried it.

12oz bottle purchased at Pinocchios in Media. Pours black, nearly opaque, with a small, slowly settling tan head. Good lacing sticks to the glass. Aroma of roasty, slightly charred malt and bitter, citrusy grapefruit hops. Subtler pine notes.
Flavor follows the nose closely; charred taste blends nicely with citrus, grapefruit pith, pine resins. Good bitterness that doesn't overwhelm. A prototypical black Ipa.
Medium bodied with medium to slightly low carbonation and a very smooth and creamy mouthfeel; this is one of the best aspects of this beer, in my opinion. A very tasty and easy drinking take on the style.
