Pours a deep ruby red with an off white, almost khaki colored head. Head does not retain but does lace plenty.

Smells of dark fruits, some fresh bread, caramel and very faint subtle hops.

The flavor of the beer is very well balanced. unsweetened cocoa, caramel, malt, roasted walnut and some breadiness in its full flavored finish.

Medium carbonated, not too overpowering with a little bit of an alcholic burn.

I can see why its one of Troeg's flagships. This a good beer that is always a good bang for your buck.

12oz.

A: Pours a brownish-red caramel color with a nice off-white head.

S: Treacle, raisin bread, maple, molasses, a hint of nutmeg. Very sweet aroma.

T: Birch syrup, mild hop bitterness, toasted grain, prunes, dark bread. A bit of alcohol in the finish.

M: Between medium and thick-bodied with moderate carbonation.

O: I wasn't too impressed by this one.

Pours dark mahogany with a vibrant ruby hue. A tan three fingers of creamy foam sits aloft this fantastic pour into a pilsner glass. Superb retention but no real lacing. This beer is very enticing. Nose is dark ripe fruits, a little chocolate and plenty of carmel malt. As it warms the nose opens up with raisin, cherry, the promise of a little spice and a faint breath of floral hops. On the palate the complexity builds. It’s creamy and sticky with fruits and a full malt presence that expands with some biscuit. The malt has depth and is resilient and forthcoming during the drink. It finishes sweet and off dry with a smacking of hops bitter to coat the mouth while the malt stays up sweet and crisp . It’s light enough to drink but it’s on the heavier side of medium body. This is a big hearted and velvety doopelbock . Rousing and fat. Again Troegs does not disappoint.

Poured from bottle into Chimay glass.

A - Dark copper look. Looks like iced tea almost as some would prefer a long island ice tea.

S - This smells better then this taste which is rare in most of the beers i have drank. Oh yeah, i should probably describe what this smells like. This may be way off but it smells like fresh almonds even though i'm sure they were nowhere within the brewing process.

T - I find this beer tasting like nothing i can think of. It's kind of a unique taste.

M - This beer had a terrible feel. It has a rough texture and a horrible aftertaste that reminds you more and more why this beer isn't that good.

I'm not a fan of this brewery, and this beer is just another reason why. This is a standard beer that I think isn't worth a shot at.

I poured this beer relatively cool but it has warmed as I wrote that bit. It poured a dark mohagany colour and is clear! The one finger head faded to just a faint ring around the glass and leaves a little lacing.

The aroma is caramel malty sweet dominant with raisin bread and cherries as well.

AS this beer warms, more comes out! Imagine that! It's main flavour is caramel malt and is really forward but there are definitely solid black cherry notes as well as a mild roasted flavor and a bit of bready yeastiness. (I love making up beer words). As the sip finishes the roasted notes actually dry out the sweet a bit keeping it from being "cloying" and some very mild peppery notes arrive. There is a VERY mild hop bitterness and a slight warming from the alcohol, but not much in the way of being noticed flavor wise.

The mouthfeel is obviously full and sweet and admittedly like candy, but it's not sickening sweet and quite drinkable. The carbonation is kept at bay by the sweetness and is low. Pretty typical for this style. It does make a transition into dry which is pretty interesting! LIKE!

Overall, I would LOVE to try this on tap as I find it pretty dang good in the bottle. Personal feelings about the beer aside, I think this fits into the style excellently especially with the roasted notes and also pulls off a pretty amazing cover up of the alcohol and provides some nice roasted notes. I would say that this is pert near being world class and gets a solid 4.5 out of 5 overall from me.
