Enjoy this as a token of our appreciation. With the demise of Tröegs Oatmeal Stout, this long-forgotten recipe serves as an inspiration and a heartfelt thanks to our faithful stout fans. What’s special here? We start with a seductive malty sweetness, combine it with hints of chocolate and roasted flavors and round out the texture and taste with a healthy helping of oats. A three-hop blend brings perfect balance to the sweet malt adding a dry finish to this big beer.

Thanks to dyan for this interesting extra.

Pours a murky brown/red color, large frothy creamy head with some good lacing to back it up, good retention.

Smell is predominately malty with some funkiness/spiciness going on, can make out a whiff of alcohol.

Taste is also malty, the spiciness hits the mouth very quickly, followed by the creaminess of the beer, but in the aftertaste the alcohol becomes more noticeable. All things considered though, for a beer that's virtually 10%, it is well hidden.

Thanks to Mike for this one.

A: The beer pours a dark brown color with a creamy tan head.

S: Very oxidized. Almost sherry- or port-like. Big dark fruits and a bit of booze. Some dark chocolate and a lot of roasted malts. Not too much roast or oatmeal character.

T: Lightly roasty with a lot of dark chocolate and some noticeable alcohol--almost like a chocolate liqueur. Some dark fruit flavors like prunes and plums. A little bit of cardboard oxidation.

M: Medium to full in body with a low to medium carbonation. Really heavy on the tongue.

O: Some good things to it, but some negative ones as well. And, too boozy.

Bottle from 2007; Pours black brown with a light khaki brown head.

Nose is all purple plums with hints of fruited coffee.

Mouthfeel is full and bold with an elegant carbonation and a nice balance.

Flavors are complex plum, sweet milk chocolate that turns to dark bitter chocolate with a coffee/espresso undertones. There is a hop quality to this beer that I normally would not like in a stout that just really works here and with this one. Creamy, malty, lightly sweet and complex makes this a nice stout to drink with food or sip with a whiskey or cigar.

Nice. And, a decent example that a 2007 brew in a small bottle may last nicely to May 2011 if and when stored decently. This one may even have some more time although sooner or later the creamy sweet character may be lost. However, not yet!

Massive Mega Scratch Beer Tasting @ the Meat Meet, 8.21.2010. Thanks Unclejedi!

Scores reflect how the beer is drinking NOW, and not when released.

Attractive brown-red brew with a smidgen of head. Big nose, sweet and slick, some minor roast, cocoa. Massively slick beer, sweet and tastes "old". Slides down the throat and leaves a sweet-cocoa-coffee finish for a while. Nothing weird or interesting here, just a big, well-aged Imperial oatmeal stout. I like it. Nothing wrong after 3 years. If you have some, you're in luck!

12oz bottle thanks to dashirey.

Pours dark brown, but light in color for the style, with a little bit of tan foam sitting on top that fades to swirls.

Aroma is lots of sherry-like oxidation. Roast and chocolate as well.

Flavor is nice and chocolatey. Pretty subtle for an RIS. Some dark fruits and sherry-like oxidation. Like a toned-down, aged Kate the Great almost.

Medium-light bodied for the style, but very smooth. Low carbonation.

Very enjoyable aged imperial stout. Drinkable.

Chilled bottle into a glass. Shared by nickd717. Thanks Nick.

A: Pours a dark, translucent mahogany body (like caramel swirled into chocolate). Actually quite a beautiful color, though not particularly unique. I enjoyed looking at it. The carbonation was light and fine, leaving milky swirls on top of the brew in a matter of seconds. No lace.

S: Anise, sherry oxidation, dark fruit, anise, chocolate, and possibly molasses? Something interesting going on here for sure.

T: Substantially less complex than the aroma. Anise, sherry oxidation with a hint of wet cardboard, and some chocolate. It's still decent, but nothing I'd trade for or gush over at this point. Definitely on its way downhill.

M: Under medium bodied; it's not very viscous. Very smooth, with fine carbonation.

D: Eh. Nothing to write home about, but nothing to complain about, either.

I got this bottle from DIM, in a recent BIF, thank you. Poured into a pint glass at 51 degrees.

Appearance: A one finger foamy creamy tan head that has good retention. The color of the beer is dark brown, like used motor oil. The clarity of the beer is opaque. The head left some lacing on the glass.

Nose: A rich solvent aroma, with notes of oatmeal, caramel, toffee, yeast, bread crust, and molasses. There are also hints of floral bouquet, phenols, and oak in the background.

Taste: A nicely roasted malt, with toffee, dried cherries, caramels, solvents, yeast, bread crust, molasses, and phenols. There are notes of floral, fruity esters, oak, oatmeal, and oak.

The mouth feel is coating, chewy, and slightly flat.

Overall: The body of the beer is thick, the finish is medium full. This is a good beer lots of flavor, the alcohol is more pronounced, and the oatmeal helps tame the beast. This beer need to be refined and it would be 5.0 beer.

Thanks to dyan for giving me this bottle... because he fucking felt like it? Awesome! Thanks dude! Though the white "wax" is a little suspect....

Pours black into my ithaca tulip, a tight, medium-tan foam of about a half finger fades quickly. A little dotted lace, but somewhat dead-looking despite the attempted wax-preservation.

Wow, smells pretty awesome. Rich roast with some oxidation creeping in just a bit around the edges. Well integrated coffee beans and licorice in moderation.... the oxidation actually became a bit more apparent on subsequent pours but is still at a tolerable level.

The taste is much of the same, a little bit of a brassy/metallic oxidation presence detracting from what is really a great roasty, silky smooth oatmeal stout. A little bit of a caramel/cola sweetness. Low carbonation, medium-full bodied and a nice sipper. Alcohol is well integrated, and I really like this abv point, just below double digits - not too strong.

It's hard for me to comment for sure, but my thinking is that as good as this is now, it might've seen slightly better days at some point. I think it'll hold together for a little longer though. Thanks again, Dyan!

12oz bottle courtesy of NFLMVP. Thanks Steve! Poured in an oversized tulip and split with my buddy Daive (Infestaxion).

A: Dark, muddy brown. Very little head. Not that impressive looking at all. Decent lacing.

S: Sweet malts, dark fruit, earthy hops, caramel, vanilla and some strong alcohol presence. Doesn't scream Oatmeal Stout at all. Hmmm...

T: Alcohol is surprisingly dominant. Almost Sherry like with lots of dark fruits, cherries, etc... Sweet malts and some very slight hints of chocolate and roastiness. A lot of the flavors seemed buried by alcohol. Once again, not even remotely like a traditional Oatmeal Stout.

M: Light bodied. A little syrupy. Not much carbonation at all.

D: The almost 10% ABV is in full effect here. I thought it would have calmed down with a few years of age on it. I found the 6oz I had to be plenty, this one is a sipper, whatever it is...

Very interesting beer. Other reviews seem to be all over the place with this one as well. Not sure what it was, but I'm pretty sure it's not an Oatmeal Stout Should probably be classified as a Strong Ale.

Pours a very dark amber brown color with reddish chestnut brown edges when held to a light source and a huge foamy beige head with excellent retention leaving chunks of lacing here and there on it's way down.

Sweet alcohol aroma with a lot of dark fruit notes and an underlying roasted chocolate malt backbone. Hints of chocolate, toffee, coffee and oatmeal.

Medium bodied that is slightly watered down. Pretty hoppy up front with a lot of oatmeal flavor followed by by a smooth roasted maltiness with hints of chocolate, caramel, oatmeal, burnt toast, coffee, toffee and a sweet yet dry hop finish.

Appears a dark brown nearing black with crimson highlights whn held to the light. A frothy, light tan head slowly fades into a mild cap. Spotty bits of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of rich cocoa, cappuccino, cooked oats, caramel, black cherries, and plums.
Taste is of the aromas with caramel, cocoa nib, and ripe fruit coming to the forefront. A touch of Angelfood cake, espresso, oiley hops, raisins, and ripe figs are found in the flavors. Perhaps a touch of oxidized, cardboard is noticed due to the cellar aging but it's welcomed in such a style.
Mouthfeel is full bodied, creamy, chewy, spritzy on the finish, with a slick oiliness found in the finish. Warming alcohol is certainly noticed in this one. Not a bad thing but be prepared.

Poured from 12oz. bottle into a Dogfish Head snifter. Beer was a cola color with a small, diminishing head. Moderate carbonation and lacing.

Aroma was sweet malt, nuts, dark fruits and light cocoa.

Taste was sweet and malty, caramel, lightly spicy and bitter. Well balanced and pretty tasty.

Easy drinking. Hard to believe this is 9.90%.
