Another in a long line of reviews I'm finally getting around to posting. Part of a sampler 12 pack brought back by one of my friends as a Christmas gift. Clear, light amber, with a one-finger, off-white head which diminishes fairly quickly and leaves minimal lacing on the glass. Nice aroma of fruity (citrus scents) hops issues forth both during the pour and once in the glass. A fairly nice tasting beer, some sweetness gives way to a bit of hop bitterness in the finish, again the fruity taste of hops is present. Thin to medium bodied with a bit of oiliness left in the mouth. An overall nice beer--not exceptional but on average pretty good, and I'm sure I'll try it again.

Glass: US pint glass
Troegs' Pale Ale is the first beer from this brewery I've been able to try. The work is true to style, featuring prominent hop and malt character, and the brewery's usage of pilsner and Munich malt is, I suppose, fairly novel. Still, while I thought the beer was very well put-together, there wasn't that much distinction from any other quality US pale ale, and so while enjoyable, I don't think I'd go to much trouble to acquire more of this (and as Troegs does not disribute in my region, I would have to).
Pours a 1.3cm tall head of slightly off-white bubbles, small in size and fairly dense. Retention is about a minute-and-a-half, above average, but not by a large amount. The lacing that is left is fairly minimal, a few lines and dots scattered sparsely across the insides of the glass. Body is a dark golden orange color, with light bringing out bright yellow-orange hues. Carbonation is visible through the transparent body, moderate in both size and activity.
Aroma is of flowery Cascade hops, slightly fruity ale yeast esters, and a notable caramel malt backbone. While this clearly is showing some of its age, I'm also surprised by how "average" it is when I learned that its hopped with Amarillo and Cascade.
Overall flavors are of floral, slightly citrusy hops, sweet and caramelized malts, and fairly mild bitterness. Tasting opens with caramelized malts on the front of the palate, joined to a light floral hop quality. Mid-palate is a combination of sugary malt sweetness (like a strange mix of caramel malt and smarties candy), flowery and perfume-like hops with a slight citrus component, and moderate hop bitterness. Back of palate notes continued floral hops, enhanced hop bitterness, and a slightly sweet, crackery and caramel-like malt presence. Aftertaste of more notable hop bitterness, slightly grapefruit-like, with a background flavor of light caramel malt.
Beer is medium-bodied, with low to medium-low levels of carbonation, resulting in a smooth, lightly foamy mouthfeel that's easy on the palate and flows relatively well. Closes fairly dry, with lingering bitterness enhancing this parameter across the palate. Residual stickiness is moderate to low.
