Appearance: Completely clear gold with a thin rim of tiny white carbonation. Some speckles in the middle and a series of gentle bubble streams moving freely throughout. Looks like snow falling upwards. Decent lacing. Nice but nothing out of the ordinary for the style

Aroma: Floral hops at first with a sugary malt backbone. The hops are slightly piney and grassy. There are faint fruity esters. Citrus - maybe grapefruit. The malts are caramel and bread. This has a nice aroma to it

Taste: Crisp hops dominate. Pine and some earthy grass. Juicy grapefruit. Mostly pine though. Some yeasty notes. There's some caramel throughout but it's an afterthought. Nothing earth-shattering here but a nice crisp clean flavor

Mouthfeel: Very clean and crisp. Smooth. Watery actually

Overall: Troegs has a great lineup in my honest opinion. This isn't their best offering but a really nice brew for a hot summer day or any other time of the year. This doesn't do anything to push the envelope or anything (nor does it claim to) but a good refreshing representation of a pale ale done right

Pours clear and golden with some friendly bubbles coming up from the bottom. A faint finger plus a little more of foam that fell pretty fast to some sticky lace. Nose is amiable, bright with cascade hops, juicy and fruity with some grass underneath. Malt is deliciously sweet on the nose with biscuit, bread and honey. Taste is crisp, light with a mild astringency and a grainy aspect of the malt sweetness. Broad leafy hops give a touch of bitter and a kiss of orange while the malt stays ample and sweet. This is an enlivening pale ale that keeps it’s bitterness in check leaving the palate open to a variety of foods. So far Troegs is a go to brewery for good session beers

I poured this beer fairly cold from the bottle into a tulip glass and it poured a gold to amber color clear and crisp with a two finger head that settles to a nice full ring and Friar Tuck center cap with lacing that looks like Charlie Brown Halloween ghost costumes on the glass. GHOUL! Er, cool!

The aroma is of sweet pale malt, lemon peel and floral aromatic hops and some grapefruit-like yeast esters.

The sip starts off mellow and mildly sweet with pale malt and caramel with a bit of floral hops for good measure and as the the beer passes across your tongue and palate some of that sweetness fades and grapefruit mixed with the malt sweetness is balanced with the now more apparent floral and citrus hops and finally the beer finishes with hop bitterness overriding a bit of malt sweetness.

The moutfeel is light and smooth, slightly dry and leaves a slick feeling on the tongue. Carbonation is moderate and playful.

Overall, I find this beer incredibly drinkable! The body is light enough as to where you can drink a few on a hot day but not session them. Preferably they would imbibed indoors in the AC. At first this beer is not at all that bitter but by the end of the glass there is an aftertaste for sure making this a tough beer to recommend as a transition beer from pee-water but making it an excellent example of an APA! This one is tough to score. I don't like the slimy feeling on my tongue and will have to take points for that but all in all, EXCELLENT! 4 out of 5!!

From: Anderson's, Columbus, OH
Date:
Glass: US pint glass

Troegs' Pale Ale is the first beer from this brewery I've been able to try. The work is true to style, featuring prominent hop and malt character, and the brewery's usage of pilsner and Munich malt is, I suppose, fairly novel. Still, while I thought the beer was very well put-together, there wasn't that much distinction from any other quality US pale ale, and so while enjoyable, I don't think I'd go to much trouble to acquire more of this (and as Troegs does not disribute in my region, I would have to).

Pours a 1.3cm tall head of slightly off-white bubbles, small in size and fairly dense. Retention is about a minute-and-a-half, above average, but not by a large amount. The lacing that is left is fairly minimal, a few lines and dots scattered sparsely across the insides of the glass. Body is a dark golden orange color, with light bringing out bright yellow-orange hues. Carbonation is visible through the transparent body, moderate in both size and activity.

Aroma is of flowery Cascade hops, slightly fruity ale yeast esters, and a notable caramel malt backbone. While this clearly is showing some of its age, I'm also surprised by how "average" it is when I learned that its hopped with Amarillo and Cascade.

Overall flavors are of floral, slightly citrusy hops, sweet and caramelized malts, and fairly mild bitterness. Tasting opens with caramelized malts on the front of the palate, joined to a light floral hop quality. Mid-palate is a combination of sugary malt sweetness (like a strange mix of caramel malt and smarties candy), flowery and perfume-like hops with a slight citrus component, and moderate hop bitterness. Back of palate notes continued floral hops, enhanced hop bitterness, and a slightly sweet, crackery and caramel-like malt presence. Aftertaste of more notable hop bitterness, slightly grapefruit-like, with a background flavor of light caramel malt.

Beer is medium-bodied, with low to medium-low levels of carbonation, resulting in a smooth, lightly foamy mouthfeel that's easy on the palate and flows relatively well. Closes fairly dry, with lingering bitterness enhancing this parameter across the palate. Residual stickiness is moderate to low.
