Pours a fairly boring looking clear brown color. There is very little carbonation and almost no head.
Smell is much better than the look. Very nutty smell. A strong malt smell and really nice nuttiness (is that a word?).
Taste is very complex on this English brown ale. Strong malt taste and really good nutty taste. Complex sip even has a nice hop tinge at the end.
Mouthfeel is a little thin for my liking. It goes down thin, but I generally like a little more of a mouthful on a nut brown.
Drinkability is very good on this nut brown. It goes down real smooth and has a lot of complex tastes to it. I wasn't too sure about this beer at first, but the more I drink, the more I like it. This is a great beer for fall or any time you feel like a nut brown...

I have to admit, I didn't really go into this one expecting much but a run of the mill brown, and I was pleasantly surprised. Poured an nice dark brown with very little head, but left a fair amount of lacing on the glass. Very nutty smell, with some caramel and malt, and an odor of alcohol that was much less present on the mouth than in the nose. Nutty, not very malty or sweet, a very drinkable beer. Not as heavy or sweet as I expected it would be, but not weak by any means. Not the best brown ale I've ever had, but definitely above average. I'll absolutely be making this one of my regulars.

Only my second offering from this brewery but again I liked it.

A - Decent pour for a brown ale. It's brown and has a nice tan colored head with some slightly sticky lacing.

S - Wow that is pretty good. Brown malts, cashews and pecans covered in caramel.

T - I really like how they didn't load this beer with brown malt. This resulted in a very drinkable beer with slight cashews and walnuts and a smooth creamy sweet caramel finish.

M - Light to medium pretty on par with the style.

Overall if found again I would get it again. It's right up next to Samuel Smith's version and I liked the sweetness. Good beer.

Pours a deep, copper-amber with 1/2" of thick, dense, foamy head that has good retention. The nose is faint caramel, nutty malt. The taste is light caramel malt but little else. The mouthfeel is light to medium bodied, smooth, and well carbonated.

In my opinion a fuller body and a heavier malt content would have gone a long way to improve this one. It was OK.

A: Poured from the bottle into a pint glass. Body is coppery-amber with a small off-white head that recedes quickly.

S: The best part of this beer is the nose - some toffee and hints of hazelnut. Touch of brown sugar as well. Hint of florally hops is more noticed as it warms.

T: A bit of burnt brown sugar and toast up front; also graham crackers. Malt is followed by an earthy and metallic bitterness that doesn't seem to gel well with the malt, leaving a burnt, bitter aftertaste.

M: Light-to-medium in heft, carbonation is a bit fizzy and sharp.

O: This one's OK; nothing special. I've had better . . . and worse.

On tap at Mr. Goodbar's. Big brown sweetness with some spice. Not necessary but I just like to have a beer here. Reddish brown colour, only a whisp of head. Toated caramel, some burnt sugar. Medium mouthfeel, carbonation right there. Not greatly drinkable.

Bottle into mug (sampled 6/20/10). Poured a clear medium brown with a one finger short lasting head. Aroma pulled in some nice nutty notes with a hint of the hops and a little sugar in there too -- very interesting. Very smooth in the mouth and while the malt sweetness was present it wasn't as overpowering as I thought it would be and the hops added the right amount of bite at the finish to keep this refreshing. Overall a pretty good one!

Sampling a cellar temp bottle poured into a pint glass. Pours a clear copper hue with fizzy eggshell white head foaming up 2 cm and fading slowly to a sturdy surface layer. The head sticks around throughout the sampling.
Aroma is caramel malt and a bit of grain, maybe almond scents or maybe my imagination. A little earthy hops blended in but overall the nose is fairly mild.
First sip reveals an average body with very fine gentle rolling carbonation, slightly creamy texture makes the beer very easy to drink.
Flavor is some grainy malt and a bit of brown sugar or maple syrup sweetness but far from cloying in fact very mild sweet more the flavors than the sweetness of those products. I get some grassy and herbal hops on the finish that are just a hint of bitterness. The beer is exceptionally easy to drink and I could have several of these in a sitting. Not overly complex, but definitely no flaws in this bottle either. A well balanced and drinkable beer. i would drink this one again.

No freshness date to be found, but the brand is new to the store, so I'll guess it's fresh enough.

Pours a dark but brilliant copper with honey highlights- somewhat short of brown, but still good-looking. It's capped with a moderate ecru head.

The generally-light aroma has a light floral hoppiness. The malts provide a graham cracker-like breadiness.

The taste has a mild, earthy hop bitterness complemented by a lightly sweet, graham cracker-like maltiness. The finish has a light lingering bitterness. The flavor profile overall is somewhat less than robust, but is very well-balanced, making this easy to drink.

Mouthfeel is on the thin side, but has a nice carbonation.

I reviewed Ellicottville's Pale Ale just a while ago today, and I have to say I'm stuck by how similar these two beers are, minus the obvious adjustments to make each belong to its style.

Nut Brown Ale is a totally decent brown ale, which I'm glad to have tried.

Ellicottville Nut Brown is a very clear copper ale with a foamy, waxy, bubbly khaki head that has excellent retention and lacing. It has a toasty, nutty aroma with notes of grass and flowers. It's pretty light bodied and a little sharp. The finish is chewy. It has a light but well balanced taste, not sweet or dry. It's toasty and nutty, just like the aroma. The finish is a little bitter with herbs and grass. The aftertaste is nutty. This is very drinkable. This would be an acceptable session ale.
