Notes:
After 13 years of brewing excellence, we deemed it time to produce a year round IPA style. Because a well made, well balanced IPA is a work of art, we took our time with this one and added our own local spin onto it. First we needed a substantial malt backbone to not only create the 6.5% abv, but to compliment later lupulin additions. Heavy doses of Munich Malt and Cara malt help to add body, mouthfeel and a touch of sweetness. Canadian wheat malt also lends to the great foam and head retention. 5 different hops are added at 7 different times in this brew, and the majority of the massive, complicated, but delightful hop profile is derived from Columbus and Cascade hops from the kettle boil (bittering, flavor, and aroma additions). The real icing on this masterpiece, however, comes from literally searching the near and far: Brewmaster Derek Luke married Annie Sherman, a Kiwi citizen in late 2011, visiting New Zealand for their honeymoon. Upon return, Derek came back raving of the legendary Motueka hop. Craving to satiate the “near and far desire”, this hop is added in conjunction with Chinook hops grown right here in RI from Ocean State Hop farms during the lengthy dry hopping process. The result: A fantastic IPA 100% produced locally with local hops, yet worldly in its own right!

Bought a 6 pack (rare for me) at Bottles on the East Side. Decided to have 2 of these in a row. Why not? Sat. night - home alone watching playoff baseball and a horror movie later.

Poured into a Caesar's Palace bomber glass. Nice copper color, somewhat thin head and solid lacing. Right away I can tell I'm going to like this due to the strong piney aroma. The smell carries over nicely to the taste - there's also a profound bitter kick that lingers for quite a while. I recommend sipping this slowly to allow the complex hop flavors to settle in.

Overall a great effort from CEB. A 'hophead" kind of beer. This should take over Hurricane Amber as their flagship beer. I also recommend touring their brewery if you happen to be in the Newport area - always a good time.

Poured from a bottle with no freshness notched off the notch area. Cap reads "first rule of beer club, don't talk about beer club.
Pours a deep honey gold, with big pillowing white head that never leaves the top of the glass. aggressive bubbles flying all over. very nice. lots of lacing.

aroma is very sweet. caramel malts, orange creamsicle and some slight grassy hops.

taste begins with a mixture of sweet bready malts, caramel and pine hops. Bitterness quickly follows, overflowing all over the tongue and zapping the buds to life. citrus hops, grass, mild pine, and lime zest. there is a solid caramel sweetness that holds the bitterness in check, and balances the varying hop flavors well. an overall earthiness to the entire hop profile that melds nicely with the sweet malts for a pleasant finish that is both bitter and a bit creamy.

mouthfeel is medium bodied and vibrant. zingy hop bitterness that lingers. solid but not overdone carbonation.

I picked this up on a whim and am very pleasantly surprised. Finally a unique single ipa that is tasty and drinkable and very enjoyable. I'll be buying this again, just hoping that it is notched for freshness this time...

Enjoyed this one at Shannon View Inn in Warwick RI

Poured crystal clear with a thin layer of bubbles--if anything a tad undercarbonated. Small stream of tight thin bubbles rising from imperfections and nicks in the pint glass. Golden Straw color.

Smell: passion fruit, grapefruity with small citrus notes, pine needles, a little fresh flower tinge, nice estery co2 aroma.

taste: hops right up front, borderline assaultive. The big initial upfront bitterness might be a tad out of balance. It quicky mellows though with some munich/vienna malty characters coming through. Hop pesense dominates the rest of the glass and when the pint is 3/4 empty the aroma is awesome! Well made IPA for sure and an interesting take on this style--its almost "West Coast" but more refined and subtle....

Mouthfeel: could use a tad more body, but its certainly isn't thin by any stretch. Its just got lots of hops in there. Maybe a higher abv beer (this one is mid six) would result in more residual body?

O: Definately an IPA that will find its way into a hop lovers rotation, if not actually become the go-to everyday IPA!!! Nice work!

Consumed 12/3/12

Appearance: Hazy medium-amber with some orange highlights - pours with a creamy, off-white head, leaves a decent ring and some lacing

Smell: Grassy, weedy hops - not "weedy" as in dank, weedy as in this smells like weeds you'd pull out a garden - not 100%, but I think this aroma is due to the New Zealand hops - beyond the weeds, there are some nice floral citrus aromas, grapefruit rind - nice malt backbone - lightly sweet, with some caramel, lightly toasted

Taste: Better than the aroma - nicely bitter, with some sharp grapefruit peel, pith and pine needles - very dry, lacking anything I would describe as "juicy" - spicy, and very earthy - leafy, herbal - caramel malts, some dry biscuits - asprin-like bitter aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Medium body, nicely smooth, nicely carbonated, nicely drinkable

Overall: IPA = "India Point Ale" = 2edgy4me

The aroma is pretty odd, but it tastes good. This is a solid effort from Newport Storm. Perhaps not the "masterpiece" as described by the brewers, but it's worth a try.

On-tap 10/14/2012 at Track 84 in Warwick, RI, served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep amber color, with a large off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is faint but contains fruity citrus, floral hops and caramelized malts.

T: The taste starts out sweet with an earthy hops bitterness. Then a strong caramel and citrus comes in. There’s a hearty malt character that creates a good balance. The after-taste is slightly hoppy and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, good representation of style, this is solid IPA to drink for a long time.

12oz brown bottle with a freshness date

LOOK: Slightly hazed amber hue, beautiful looking froth

SMELL: Caramel, hop spice, juicy, nutty, floral, orange rind, faint evergreen

TASTE: Creamy, crisp, slick, pungent hop, orange pith, leafy, grassy, bitter, faint bisicuity grain, pear juice, hop resin, grapenuts, drying hoppy finish

Love how this beer separates itself from other IPAs with simply a different assault of hops. After a few sips it quickly grew on me, excellent work here!

Lumpy head that leaves plenty of spotty lace. Pale gold color and clear.

Traditional and attractive aroma of pale malts and peppery hop.

The flavor matches the smell but it isn't unique. A clear case of no errors but also not special. Nevertheless, this is a very well-made, tasty IPA that solidly fits the category. Good body with high carbonation.

A-Pours a hazy, glowing burnt amber hue. Fat bubbles rise in spacious clusters to feed the creamy, frothed cap. Although the head doesn't even start off tall, as it dies, it leaves a full jacket of lacing.

S-To me this smells like a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale clone. Copyright infringement in the nose! Seriously, I get big notes of underripe clementine. Super zesty. Slight pine and plenty of grass. Modest but far from timid is the malt. Sweet animal cracker maltiness.

T-Bitter fresh cut grass and sturdy pine. The aforementioned flavors are the most noticeable and coercive. Underneath the massive bicep of pine and grass lies smoother hoppy notes of citrus. Hops finish semi-sweet and very zesty. Behind the hop is a somewhat malnourished malt set. Sweet dough and cracker.

M-Medium body. Prickly bubbles. High bitterness. Lasting bitterness too. Semi-dry. Booze comes out slightly.

O/D-Rhode Island can apparently brew some muscular IPAs. This was far more abrasive than I would have expected. To keep it simple... I was pleasantly surprised by its machismo.

Pouring a cellar temp bottle into a snifter. The beer is a bright copper hue with fizzy bleached white head of 2 cm foaming up and fading slowly to a sturdy surface layer.

Aroma is rich with grapefruit and pine sap. I do get a bit of grainy caramel malt buried too. Not a punch in the face hop nose, but certainly complex and interesting.

First sip reveals an average body with fine tingly carbonation. Easy drinking IPA with smooth texture and crisp finish.
The flavor is briefly sweet malt, caramel primarily, which then rolls to pine sap and general bitter hop astringency that lingers and dries out my palate after each sip.

This beer is a nice easy drinking IPA that is interesting and hoppy enough to keep you coming back for more, but not a super hop bomb that leaves you unable to taste any other food after drinking it.
A nice addition to Coastal Extreme lineup.

12oz. bottle served in my SA Perfect Pint. Pours a translucent orange-copper hue with a loose, one inch, cream-colored head. Head eventually settles into a solid 1/8th inch cap with delicate webs of lacing revealed as the brew recedes. Pleasant nose - piney with some citrus zest and an earthy quality. Taste consistent with nose with addition of a toasted malt backbone. Finishes with a pleasant, earthy bitterness that gradually dissipates between quaffs. Mouthfeel is medium-light with a lively carbonation and a slightly oily texture. Overall, a well-balanced and drinkable IPA. I'm glad to see Newport Storm add a solid IPA to their line-up. I think this beer would be fantastic on-cask.

12oz into small lowenbrau mug... $1.79 @ Nikki's. Glad to see that RI-grown hops made it into the boil on this one.

A- Light in color, orangey yellow, 3cm head that settles quickly but leaves some nice sticky lacing behind. Big frosty top ring of lace.

S- The nose on this is muted, sweet melon and floral notes, but it's pretty mild.

T- Wow, this one is more bitter than I had anticipated. Good pine resin snap throughout, there are some fruity/floral notes like honeysuckle. Malt sweetness is pretty mild, and I think it does a good job at adding a bit of oomph without outshining the hops.

M- Goes down well. No complaints, I really like the lingering bitterness of this one. Pretty dry and very bitter, satisfying my hop fix.

O- I think this one's going to work its way into my regular rotation. A darn good beer and a solid effort from the Storm Boys. Well done.

We hosted a tasting at our store, and having picked up Newport Storm's Ursula Pale Lager earlier this week I wanted to give their brand new IPA a try.

A: A nice light amber, what you'd expect for an IPA. Crystal clear. Pours just over a finger of head that sticks around for a while. Very fine head, teeny-tiny bubbles, leaving a delicate lacing.

S: A tad herbal, very floral, especially Rose. Smells almost identical to Rose flavored shisha I used to put in my hookah. Not much else going on, unfortunately.

T: Herbal and resinous hops right up front, followed briefly by a light toasted malt, then finishes dry with pine and resin. Leaves a lingering taste of flowers. Very fresh, by the way. Batch was less than two weeks old.

M: Dry all the way through. Pretty light in body, but something I would definitely take my time with.

Overall: Perfect beer for those last few days of warmth before Autumn. Light enough to enjoy with a meal, and enough going on to keep you interested. Definitely worth a try. I've personally grown out of the hophead stage, and would have liked to see more body and a bigger malt presence- but alas, that calls for a bigger beer. It reminded me of Haverhill Brewery's Leatherlips IPA, but with a different hop character and more balanced.

I feel like I munched on a garden for a midnight snack. Gotta drink me another one.
