Black Wax/Corked

Very loud POP when the cork was removed. Poured into a chalice a very nice brownish color, very nice carbonation, with a nice one-finger creamy light tan head, with a nice huge oil slick in the middle of the glass. The nose is malty, very slight hop note, yeast, figs, raisins, plums. The taste is very nice, sweet, malty, slightly hoppy, with lots of dark fruits. Medium body, ABV is hidden very well. This is another very tasty brew from CE. Thanks Bill!

Split this bottle with Stopper. Poured into a snifter at cellar temp.
The beer pours a clear deep mahogany with creamy beige head of 1 cm foaming up and gradually fading to a thin surface layer.
Aroma is rich caramel and some dark fruit, mostly plums and raisins. Very rich and robust nose, but not boozy or overbearing.
First sip reveals an average to thick body with almost non-existant carbonation, like a cask pour. Very silky smooth texture. Nice pleasing mouthfeel.
Flavor is malty with caramel and raisins very robust and complex with some dark chocolate and just a little booze. I dont get a lot of floral notes or body thinning from any honey and the booze is amazingly well hidden for a young beer of 11%ABV. Big malty brew that is complex and robust yet easy to drink. I recommend splitting the bottle or it will catch up with you quick.

A well crafted big beer with a cool collaborative story behind it. Nice to see RI come together to make a tasty beer!

A: Pours a hazy reddish-amber color with an almost three finger head that lingers and leaves a heavy lacing on the side of the glass. You can see big bubbles forming as the head dissipates and diminishes.

S: Dark fruits are present in the nose along with a slight hint of the typical Belgian yeast. Sweetness is present in the nose, maybe brown sugar and a bit of caramel. A bit of breadiness as well.

T: The Belgian tastes are more apparent here, detectable is some of the sweetness from the nose, brown sugar, caramel, Belgian yeasts and dark fruits, I'm thinking plums and figs.

M: Heavy on the tongue with a mild amount of carbonation. Thick, yet easy to drink.

O: Overall, quite good. I'm glad I picked up a bottle before the inevitable sellout occurs.

Released on November 11, consumed on November 12- it's nice to finally have a special release in my own neighborhood. This is made by Rhode Island brewers with RI hops and RI honey.

The bottle is undated but I know it was brewed on 2/5/11. Wax-dipped and corked bottle is a huge pain in the ass to open. The cork broke in half but I was able to get it out in two pieces. After the pop there is an eerie mist flowing out of the blue glass.

Its dark brown appears ruby when held up to light, and the sandy head has some depth. Nose is dominated by alcohol with a bit of fruitcake in there. Taste is similarly fruity and spicy. Overall it's pretty heavy, sticky and chewy- pretty much like you'd expect from the style, although I think a bit more carbonation would help. While it's awfully sweet, I have to admit I don't pick up on the honey.

It's a sipper for sure, but one that's not quite as complex as I like my barleywines to be. Still worth a try.

Poured into a Newport Storm snifter. Pours a deep brown color with some red hues pulling through. A massive two inch brown head with lacing that just holds onto the side of the glass. Lace lasts forever.

Huge aroma of brown sugar, caramel and some of the honey. Faint aroma of hops but they are dominated by the malt and honey.

The taste pretty much follows the aroma with plenty of brown sugar and honey but the hops hit in mid taste a little piney and leaves a pleasant bitterness on the backend. The body is a little on the thinner side. The alcohol feel is a little strong but not overwhelming.

A sipper but the feel is a little thin. I would say the beer would do well with some aging.

On-tap 11/19/2011 at Track 84 in Warwick, RI, served in a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a deep dark reddish brown color, with a short off-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains brown sugar, fruit, caramelized malts and a good amount of hops.

T: The taste starts out sweet with flavors of fruit, caramel and brown sugar. Then a strong but not over-powering hops presence comes in. The malt character is hearty and brings some balance. The after-taste is sweet and slightly hoppy.

M: Crisp and a little smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, strong kick, decent representation of style, this is a solid and slightly different stronger beer worth drinking for a long time.
