12oz. poured into a Flying Dog goblet
A: Golden yellow with minimal head and decent lacing.
S: Smells like a farmhouse. Very nice floral champagne notes with fruity esters like very ripe apples, similar to a dry cider. It smells like an apple orchard that is actively juicing and making cider.
T: There are hops but they are all farmhouse flavors with wheaty pine, resinous grass. The aftertaste is all pine resin.
M: There is a mild carbonation that lends a slight bit of coarseness.
O: It is what it says it is, but I was expecting more of a saison-y IPA, with some decent carbonation and sweetness. Not to my liking, but I believe this is my first farmhouse IPA.

didn't ralph steadman die? is that his name? the illustrator? that guy is pretty good with the watercolors; i'll give it up. if he has passed away, his estate does an amazing job of proliferating his artwork. oh dang, maybe it was just hunter thompson who passed away and i associate the two of them closely. i just had another baltimore beer with a label drawn by a famous artist. but this is about the wildeman, which was pretty good. the hops were pretty fresh tasting, dadgum bitter! and a little bit spicy. it smelled alright, looked pretty good, but unfortunately was not a very good accompaniment to the spicy korean style noodles i was eating. and maybe that's my own fault, for not opting to drink a super dry something or other. and i've got five more of these in the fridge, so i'll be sipping again under different circumstances, but at the moment am inclined to say solid, but not superlative.

More bottles! I am not sure, but this may have come from my last visit to Highland Pizzeria.
From the bottle: "His axe is stained with the blood of a thousand adversaries. We fall in behind him as he leads us into the darkness. He turns his gaze on us. 'Tentanda via est!' The way must be tried."; "Ale brewed with spice".
My pour created a massive two fingers of dense, french vanilla-colored head that actually resembled the top of an ice cream cone. Color was a cloudy lemon-yellow. Nose had both a citrusy hoppiness as well as a mustiness. Mouthfeel was medium and the taste was interesting - hoppy, but also with a black pepper bite plus a dry mustiness. Finish was quite dry, between the spices and the yeast. This was an okay beer. I don't really dig a whole lot of adjuncts in my IPA so that worked against this one. Sorry.

I keep telling myself I won't buy any more Belgian IPAs. Then I buy another Belgian IPA. Honestly, as far as the style goes, this isn't that bad. The hop profile works out fairly well with the sweet yeast, and there's a lingering hop that isn't that bad at all. I still don't think the specific combination of the sweet, banana-y yeast and American hops works out though. I've enjoyed a handful of Belgian IPAs, but they've all strayed away from the overly banana-y flavor profile. If you actually enjoy Belgian IPAs, you might like this. It's obvious that the style has done great for Flying Dog, since this is their second Belgian IPA to get bottled. But, much like Raging Bitch, I can't recommend it.

Pours a pretty clear gold with half a finger of a white head
Smell is grassy, banana, spice, a tiny bit of tropical fruit, clove
Taste is strange, really spicy, almost like rib rub spicy, banana, belgiany yeast, Dill Pickle, very bitter earth hops, strange bitter aftertaste, really not my bag
Mouthfeel is fine for the style, medium light with sharp carbonation
Maybe I am spoiled here in WI with IMO the best Belgian IPA that is avaliable in the world, but with that said I had a lot of them and this just is odd....
Smell is interesting in a good way, taste is interesting in a bad way... Tastes like a terrible saison mixed with a even worse IPA... Glad I only took one bottle from my brothers fridge... He has not even tried it yet, I hope he likes it more then me. I hate giving bad ratings but sometimes you just gotta.

Pours a hazy golden, with a medium, creamy off-white head. Massive lacing that sticks to the glass like glue. The smell is of of fresh apricots, and a hint of vinegar. Taste begins with some apricot, followed by some sweet bread, then some honey, and an herbal, asprin-like bitter finish. Mouthfeel is good. Overall a good Belgian style IPA, though I would prefer a bit more hop bitterness and flavor for the style.

Reviewed from notes. Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Russian River pint glass.
A: Pours a nice gold with just a slight haze. Forms a big fluffy white head atop medium visible carbonation.
S: Belgian fruity esters (grape, pear, banana) with light cracker malt, some funk, and only hints of grassy hops.
T: The Belgian characteristics dominate the palate. Light malts, sweet fruity yeast esters with some citrus hops near the end. Mild pine bitterness in the hang.
M: Light body, moderate alcohol presence, and a healthy dose of carbonation sensation.
O: I'm torn here. It seems to be a pretty decent Belgian pale ale, but doesn't follow through on the promise of the IPA character. Not bad though.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of citrus, hops, spices. Taste is lots of spice, hops, citrus, some malts, more spice, a lot going on here. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall this is a solid beer worth checking out.

Golden child in color with a small white head thats airy and fades quickly. It's quite aromatic.
Aroma smells all farmhouse, tart and sour and funky oh my.
Tastes decent with a tart and dry bitter finish. Has a bit of spiciness running through it too.
There is a very sutle hop profile weaving in there too. Leaning towards citrus or tropical.
In the aftertaste there is sutle phenolic taste along with a sharp dryness.
Pretty good tasting though I would need time to aquire a taste for it.

Served in a Lagunitas mason jar.
Well, he certainly looks pretty wild... Anyway, this stuff pours a hazy sunrise gold topped by a finger of white foam. The nose comprises lemon peel, light grapefruit zest, light orange peel, mild flowers, light dried honey, and a vague sense of bready Belgian yeast. The taste brings in more of the same, along with a sharp vein of grapefruit peel running through, stabbing the tongue from time to time. But not necessarily in a bad way. Most of the time, anyway. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a decidedly dry finish. Overall, a tasty and enjoyable BIPA, even if the Belgian aspect is somewhat on the lighter end of the spectrum. Good times.

Got this in a built six pack for my birthday, giving it a whirl. Served in a tulip.
A: Pours a cloudy, light golden orange color with a massive 3 inch white soapy head that lasts a couple minutes before shrinking down to a quarter inch layer, with nice amounts of lacing.
S: As I'd expect from an IPA, can clearly pick up hops, but it doesn't predominate, can smell wheat, yeast, floral, and citrus tones
T: Actually quite delicious, this would be my first Belgian IPA, and as I have more affinity to most Belgian style beers, I'm really liking this. It's very sweet and has a slew of complex, intertwined flavors. There's yeast, honey, citrus tones, barley, bits of malts, and of course hops, but with my experience with IPA's very, very mild, and I don't like the over hopness of IPA's so this is sitting really good with me.
M: Getting up there in terms of carbonation, but most beers of this style are pretty carbonated, adds to its refreshing appeal, the sweetness from the yeast and malts nicely contrasts the relative low bitterness of the hops, but it is quite present.
O Overall, I'd say this would be the best IPA I've had and my first Belgian IPA. I nicely brings together the sweetness of most Belgian ales with the bitterness of IPA's, being that its half what I like and half what I like and half what I don't, this is a nice synthesis, and another good beer from Flying Dog, I recommend this beer.

Appearance: Pale Gold color, very cloudy. Head is not very strong/lasting. Lacing is below average. Beer appealing, head underwhelming.
Aroma/taste: aroma is strong, can smell citrus and spices. Taste is sour/tart, strong flavour of spice, citrus, slightly sweet. Spicy and a Bitter finish.
Feel: smooth, Medium-full body, bitterness gives a prickly feel throughout and after. Finish is very long and bitter.
Overall a solid beer. Interesting flavor that I found slightly intriguing.

12 oz.
Pours a slightly hazy honey and lemon gold. Sugar white head is thin and dissipates quickly.
Smells of lemon, coriander, candi sugar, lemongrass and piney hops.
Tastes of honey sweetness, lemon tartness, mild herbal elements, and a notable hop bite.
Medium to full body with tingly carbonation on the tip of the tongue and roof of the mouth.
Farmhouse IPA, huh? Well, it works. Good balance of saison-like light ale elements with a strong but restrained hop bitterness. The two pieces fit together well and make for a highly drinkable ale with a refreshing lighter taste in the package of the heavier body and potency of some of the higher abv IPAs short of the imperial class. The result is undeniably worth trying for fans of either style, and will surely appeal to many in both camps.

[Suggested Glassware: Tulip Glass]
The pour was a cloudy pale orange with a large (2-3 finger) white fluffy head that lasted throughout, reducing to a large cap with awesome sticky foamy lacing.
The aroma was of bread and grain malts, floral and herbal hops and a funky Belgian yeast with notes of citrus (lemon and grapefruit), coriander and a mild fruity ester (pineapple and green apple).
The taste was rather crisp and quite yeasty with a hint of citrus along with a mild fruitiness early on, and then became decently hoppy with a bitter citrus peel presence and a slightly spicy grapefruit finish. The flavor lingered at the back of the throat for quite a long time, leaving behind a mild spicy hoppy taste.
Mouthfeel was light in body and dry in texture with a prickly carbonation.
Overall I found this to be a crisp refreshing brew, which offered a nice balance of fruit and hops and possessed a bold bitter finish and a smooth drinkability...

P- Thanks to my buddy Ray for thie brew.
A- A lot of head on the pour and it is white like the caps of ocean waves. pale wheat color. i had to wait to pour the other half. The peaks over flow the glas but are as stiff as..well you know.
S- clove aroma and citrus hop nose. Sour mash malt as well.
F- a spicey peppery flavor intially. On the backend the clove and citrus come out but not as well as i would like.
M- spice lingers in the mouth too long and leaves a poor aftertaste. Not very smooth and the complex tones confuse my tongue.
O- it is always hit miss with Belgian IPA's and this one was a miss. Not poor but just an average i would say. The appearance and nose saved this.

12oz bottle, pours a pale, hazy, tangerine-yellow color with a tall, white head and plenty of carbonation. Excellent lacing all the way down the glass. Aromas are biscuity malt, spicy Belgian yeast, fruit, citrus. Tastes are bold and well balanced, fruity, biscuity, citrus - orange and grapefruit, Belgian yeast, spice, astringent and fairly dry on the finish. Thinner body with tons of carbonation that is not off-putting. Overall, nice take on the style, but not much of a wow factor. Still recommendable though.

Poured into a Due South Brewing Co. snifter. No readable freshness date.
A- Pours a slightly hazy medium amber color with a 1/2 inch white head that doesn't retain long before becoming a thick ring around the edge of the glass and minimal surface foam. Frosty ring of lacing sticks to the glass well.
S- Great sweet/spice hybrid with some mildly citrusy hops tying everything together. Notes of grapefruit, orange and a bit of clove.
T- Bright hop bitterness with equally bright juicy flavors and Belgian yeast. Certainly nothing farmhouse-like about it since it's mainly spice and hop driven leading to a flavor that's more fruity than funky. Very similar to Raging Bitch.
M- Sharp and tangy with medium carbonation and a lightish body.
O- Very good, but I could've sworn that this exact beer already exists and it's called Raging Bitch. Luckily for Flying Dog, I'm not docking points for that and mislabeling it "Farmhouse." I'm sure they care.

Appearance: Pours a nice golden orange…popped open and formed tons of just off-white head that did final settle down into normal, finger width thickness…beer legs all over the glass…(3.75/5)
Smell: Light, floral, and a bit citrusy…some yeast aroma…some clove aroma…(2.75/5)
Taste: Bready malt covered in floral, citrus and piney hops…tons of floral tones throughout and into the finish…there is a bit of flowery bitterness in the after taste…a bit alcoholly that does set the flavor off a bit and doesn’t balance well with the floral…(2/5)
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, tons of carbonation…clean and crisp flavor with some floral bitterness in the after taste…(3.5/5)
Overall: This is my least favorite farmhouse ale that I’ve had…the floral hops don’t settle well with the higher ABV in this brew and for me produces a flowery antiseptic taste that lingers on my palette… it’s too bitter for a Belgian and not hoppy enough for an IPA…the spices are a bit overdone…it’s certainly drinkable, but nothing that is overwhelming or something I would get again...(2/5)

How have I not reviewed this beer already?!? It is one of my favorite beers from the past year. Let me start by saying that "IPA" should not be anywhere near the name of this beer. It is a bottle conditioned Belgian style ale, with a slight touch of hops at the end. It pours an amazing head (watch out- it will foam up all over the place). The taste is complex and full of esters. If you swirl the last bit of beer in the bottle, it will produce a crazy Dr. Seuss like foam to top your beer off with. The flavors go in every direction, with a yeasty sediment cloud lurking right below the head. An amazing American version of a Belgian farmhouse beer. Just drop the IPA from the name please. What a fun beer! Nice job, Flying Dog.

(Served in a tulip glass)
A- This beer pours a full glass of foam even with a very gentle pour. It pushes above the glass holding its shape like a glacier. Soon a hazy dense yellowish-apricot body develops with a strong carbonation pushing to the surface.
S- This beer has a slightly fruity ester aroma to the yeast character and an interesting widex hint that is not really offensive. There are some green fruity notes that are probably more from hops but could be yeast, that come through lightly in the finish.
T- The peppery fusel alcohol spice leads to a dry green woody hops flavor and some dry peppery yeast phenols that linger after the dry finish. There is a nice hop pungency that lingers after the finish. Some white plastic flavors come through and turn into more of a fusel alcohol flavor as the beer opens and some apricot hop and clove phenolic come through aswell.
M- The medium-light mouthfeel has a tight fizz and not really much alcohol heat.
O- Nice big hot mess of flavors some interesting some a bit odd but none of them are really offensive. Perhaps a bit shocking but pretty tasty all the same.

A: Clear golden yellow with two-finger, white, foamy head that lasted several minutes and left a nice film. Great lacing.
S: Citrus and grass.
T: Light to moderate sweetness and solid bitterness. Not much hop flavor, just bitterness. Grass and spice.
M: Medium bodied with lively carbonation.

Flying Dog continually produces beers that strike me as quite interesting and good. This is a strong example of a Belgian style beer. A minimal hop influence puts some spicy tones on things. It's a pleasant and easy drinker. I like this one. Definitely glad to have tried it, and I wouldn't be opposed to trying it again?

Bottled 8/7/12.
Pours a murky yellow with a super foamy white head that settles to a small cap on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, grain, citrus zest, spices, and yeast. Taste is much the same with a mild spice and hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a nice smell but the taste is not as good in my opinion.

Hazy pale golden appearance. Over three fingers thick huge fluffy head of white color that persists really well. Awesome looks. More than average number of bubbles. Excellent lacing of the receding head.
Aroma: Very sweet fruity aroma with a lot of yeast presence. Clove is substantial. Good spice presence. Faint hops. Nose is more than of a strong belgian ale.
Taste: Very mild hop presence. Spicy-sweet finish. Malt presence is good. Clove like and some spice taste that follows the nose. Lack of hops is very surprising to me.
Mouth feel: Medium bodied feel. Moderate to high carbonation that does not hurt. Easy to drink. No astringency whatsoever.
Felt all the way as if i was drinking a strong ale made Belgian style.
Note: Hops in this brew grow on you as you drink. So improves the likability.
