12oz. poured into a Flying Dog goblet

A: Golden yellow with minimal head and decent lacing.

S: Smells like a farmhouse. Very nice floral champagne notes with fruity esters like very ripe apples, similar to a dry cider. It smells like an apple orchard that is actively juicing and making cider.

T: There are hops but they are all farmhouse flavors with wheaty pine, resinous grass. The aftertaste is all pine resin.

M: There is a mild carbonation that lends a slight bit of coarseness.

O: It is what it says it is, but I was expecting more of a saison-y IPA, with some decent carbonation and sweetness. Not to my liking, but I believe this is my first farmhouse IPA.

didn't ralph steadman die? is that his name? the illustrator? that guy is pretty good with the watercolors; i'll give it up. if he has passed away, his estate does an amazing job of proliferating his artwork. oh dang, maybe it was just hunter thompson who passed away and i associate the two of them closely. i just had another baltimore beer with a label drawn by a famous artist. but this is about the wildeman, which was pretty good. the hops were pretty fresh tasting, dadgum bitter! and a little bit spicy. it smelled alright, looked pretty good, but unfortunately was not a very good accompaniment to the spicy korean style noodles i was eating. and maybe that's my own fault, for not opting to drink a super dry something or other. and i've got five more of these in the fridge, so i'll be sipping again under different circumstances, but at the moment am inclined to say solid, but not superlative.

More bottles! I am not sure, but this may have come from my last visit to Highland Pizzeria.

From the bottle: "His axe is stained with the blood of a thousand adversaries. We fall in behind him as he leads us into the darkness. He turns his gaze on us. 'Tentanda via est!' The way must be tried."; "Ale brewed with spice".

My pour created a massive two fingers of dense, french vanilla-colored head that actually resembled the top of an ice cream cone. Color was a cloudy lemon-yellow. Nose had both a citrusy hoppiness as well as a mustiness. Mouthfeel was medium and the taste was interesting - hoppy, but also with a black pepper bite plus a dry mustiness. Finish was quite dry, between the spices and the yeast. This was an okay beer. I don't really dig a whole lot of adjuncts in my IPA so that worked against this one. Sorry.

Appearance: Orange with great lacing.

Smell: Flowers, orange, and clay. Excellent balance for an IPA.

Taste/Mouthfeel: Same as the flavor. Maybe a bit too much clay. Amazing mouthfeel. Very active carbonation and a medium-full body.

Overall: A very good IPA. Underrated due to its saison-like qualities.

I keep telling myself I won't buy any more Belgian IPAs. Then I buy another Belgian IPA. Honestly, as far as the style goes, this isn't that bad. The hop profile works out fairly well with the sweet yeast, and there's a lingering hop that isn't that bad at all. I still don't think the specific combination of the sweet, banana-y yeast and American hops works out though. I've enjoyed a handful of Belgian IPAs, but they've all strayed away from the overly banana-y flavor profile. If you actually enjoy Belgian IPAs, you might like this. It's obvious that the style has done great for Flying Dog, since this is their second Belgian IPA to get bottled. But, much like Raging Bitch, I can't recommend it.
