A: beautiful color on this beer - crystal clear pale-medium amber - golden orange; I got a two-finger head with a center pour into a tulip (no threat of overflow); head dropped some lace as it faded into a rough collar and flimsy film

S: fairly warm pour reveals some tropical fruitiness and that distinct Belgian yeastiness

T: on-point hop profile with bright Belgian yeast atop a hearty malt base. Chewy caramel muddles the bitter creaminess of the rich malt; citrus and pine notes linger after the initial sweetness fades

M: nothing that really leaps out here: medium-to-light body, moderate carbonation, slight slick stickiness; thick bitter aftertaste on the tongue

O: Based on this site's categorization and my limited experience with Belgian IPA's (BIPA's?), I'd say it is less Duvel-like than Hop God, and completely different-tasting from Piraat - closer to an "American"/"regular" IPA. It reminds me most of Green Flash's LeFreak, and I get the feeling that these two beers are probably closest to the true character profile of the style. I found it to be similar in feel and spirit to the Anchorage brews, Bitter Monk and Galaxy White IPA, but without the "wet blanket" flavors from the brettanomyces.
I thought this a good, if unremarkable Belgian-style IPA.

look: 3.5 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.5

Appearance: Clear, effervescent, amber with frothy cream head; long lasting; good lacing

Aroma: Good Belgian ale aroma (candi sugar, coriander); citrusy hops

Taste: Creamy, malty and sweet, but dominated with citrusy hops; thick mouthfeel lingers on tongue, but hoppy, dry aftertaste finishes; good balance overall, but not keen on the American hops in this style

Remarks: Did not score A, T, S, M at that time; disregard those scores

Pours clear and true amber with a finger of foam that fell quickly to some soapy lace. Nose is funky with Belgian yeast, tropical fruits with a touch of sour, grass and floral hop notes and a generous, deep and bready malt underneath to round it all out. There’s a touch of skunk in the nose that’s outrageous and frolicsome. As it warms the fruits come out banana and bubblegum. Up front taste is malt, dank, floral and fruity. The sour hops and bitter climb in mid palate for a delightful expression. It’s plenty fruity with citrus, banana and tangerine but the malt stays up strong well into the drink and the dry finish. Some medicinal alcohol on the palate but it’s agreeable & warming. Mouthfeel is buttery smooth, totally enjoyable & finishes bitter with a plucky aftertaste. This is a vivacious Belgian IPA that lives up to it’s reputation in every way.

The beer pours out with a large pillowy head. On the side of glass, it’s composed of large bubbles. The color is a light amber, almost like a Rosé wine.

The aroma has that familiar bready malt, but also with lots of fruit from the Belgian yeast. There’s juicy orange, but in the background, there’s a hint of alcohol.

The flavor follows quite nicely with a syrupy sweetness from citrus and pine and then a grapefruit peel finish, much like that of a Double IPA. The front certaintly has some Belgian breadiness and fruity esters. Then the end has a clean dry IPA finish that is very bitter and astringent.

The beer is quite good and an interesting take on the Double IPA. It reminds me of many beers in the style, but certainly has a personality with its Belgian influence. This is more Double IPA than “Belgian.” Unfortunately, no bottle date by this brewery, but this did taste quite fresh.

In the end, this is quite good. Recommended for Double IPA lovers looking for something different. For Belgian IPAs, I think this goes a bit too far with the IPA qualities.
