First time having the new recipe. On tap at Big Hunt.
Pours a hazy copper color. Ok carbonation with a thin layer of off white head.
Smell of caramel malts and sweet hops. Citrus and floral notes come through.
Flavors come through more than the smell lets on. Not as bitter as I expected for a pale ale, but refreshing. I get zero roastiness that others describe from the bottle.
Creamy up front, but the bitterness never develops on the finish.
Overall, this is a good beer, not great. Didn't notice a big change in recipe, but I don't think the changes hurt it.

Enjoyed this beer on tap at the Big Fish Grille in Crofton, MD.
A: Pours a dark golden hue with a 2-finger white hue that leaves a decent trail and ends in a small wispy lace.
S: Well-balanced malt and hoppy aroma.
T: Equal mix of sweet and bitter with a citrus and pine middle and finishes on the hoppy side.
M: Medium body and medium carbonation.
O: Good all-around pale ale and a nice session beer.

I tried this on tap at the Bulldog Ale House in Roselle, IL. $5 for a pint glass, but just $2 all day on Thursdays.
The beer poured a crystal clear dark amber color with a 1½ finger off-white head. Head retention was great, lasting several minutes, and there was quite a bit of slippery lacing that slid down the glass with each sip.
Mild pine, mild citrus, and mild malt aroma. Quite pleasant, actually.
This is a mild pine and citrus hop flavored beer. Good pine and grapefruit taste with some lemon in there as well. Crystal malt adds some balance but it never becomes very sweet. Bitterness is there but it's not overpowering - just 35 IBU's. I liked this beer.
Medium body with fairly high carbonation, although when I tried the bottled version the carbonation was only moderate.
Not as bitter as some pale ales, which makes it easy to drink. I found the big hop flavor without the big hop bitterness to be an interesting and welcoming touch.

On-tap in a pint glass at Black Sheep Burrito and Brews in Huntington, WV
A: Beautiful. Perfect two-finger head on a red-amber, slightly bubbly beer that just made me want to drink it through my eye sockets.
S: Even better, if that's possible. Fruity notes complemented perfectly by hops, without being overpowering. Enticing.
T: Perfect. For those who want hop flavor to be flavorful, and not hoppy for hops' sake, this is the beer for you. Rich with hops but characterized with some notes of fruity esters. Unbelievable.
M: I have to give this a 4.5 because I can't give a perfect 5 for everything. Tingly, full, with only the slightest bit of stickiness on the end.
O: I had a mouthgasm. This is the best beer by Flying Dog so far, even better than the famous Raging Bitch. So good, I think I'll have to wash these pants.

On tap at Bier Academy in Canyon Country, CA.
Pours a slightly hazy light orange with a tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is pretty underwhelming with some malt and herbal hop aromas. Taste is also pretty average with a basic malt and herbal hop combo. There is a mild bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty average pale ale in my opinion and I am not very impressed by this one.

Draft to Goblet

App- A very dark amber with gold and a two finger head. Great sticky lace
Smell- A bit smooth caramel malts. A bit one sided with no hops to balance. A bit sweet to me and just lacking in smell. Could be too cold on the tap lines.
Taste- A bit of a let down on this one. I find you either love Flying Dog or not. This one is much too malty and thick. Has a fuller taste and leaves you a bit full. This had a major lack of hop balance. As you continue to drink you do get maybe a touch of bitter. I was a bit let down with the lack of citrus as well.
Mouth- This was a medium bodied APA with a paired carbonation level. Residual malt overtones dominate the tastebuds and finish.
Drink- This was just okay for me. It was far behind others in class. Lack of balance and citrus or hops. Too one sided to fully enjoy

From 08/20/11 notes. Had on tap at Iron Horse in Washington, DC. Served in a pint glass.
a - Pours a somewhat hazy orange-amber coloor with one inch of white head and moderate carbonation evident.
s - Smells of light fruity malts, and pale bready malts. Not bad but not a ton going on. Pretty average.
t - Tastes of fruity malts, light citrus hops, pale malts, and bready malts. A little more fuirt and citrus than the nose, and a step up.
m - Medium body and moderate carbonation. Pretty smooth and easy to drink.
o - Overall a pretty average pale ale. Not a lot going on in the nose, but not bad at all. Wouldn't seek it out again but worth trying once.

Had this on draft at the local Buffalo Wild Wings of all places. They are having a promotion with Flying Dog so I was very happy about this. Served in a standard Pilsener glass.
A: Poured a dark amber/copper with a frothy white head. This died down to thin plume of head that followed me down the glass leaving nice sheets of lace on the way down.
S: The smell was sort of toned down, but I got some nice crisp grassy hops and some light malts.
T: The taste came in way stronger than the nose. I got a nice hoppy pop at the beginning that smoothed out to a nice semi-sweet cracker malt backbone. The hops come back slightly on the finish.
M: Clean and light. Crisp mouthfeel with a solid carbonation throughout. Light hops left on the palate.
O: I actually really enjoyed the beer. I was a very clean and crisp pale ale and while it wasn't complex it still tasted great and true to style. Nothing fancy, just good beer.

This is a fine Pale Ale but there are many that are much better. I had it on draft at Camden Yards and that scores some points for me. However it is a pretty standard micro pale ale. It's aroma is good but not great, it's not so cloudy golden color is like most in it's class. The taste is good and dependable and solid but not special. It is a little mild in the hops arena and doens't score real well for me in mouthfeel. Overall it is a good beer, yeah good.

On tap at The Rake in London. From notes.
A - Pours a dark gold, with mild visible carbonation and a one finger white head. Bright. Swirling gets the head back a bit. Not too bad.
S - Well balanced hop/malt aroma. Maybe dark fruit but not of the Quad strength. Hops aren't overpowering but a nice compliment.
T - Gentle hop along with that dark fruit sorta character. Doesn't seem like a typical Pale Ale but it's good. Hop is alot tamer than I would have expected but still noticable.
M - Medium body with mild carbonation and a dry finish.
O/D - Not too shabby of a Pale Ale. Not overwhelming and doesn't really pop at you but it's a good, easy drinker with a flavour profile worthy of keeping me interested for more than one.

On-tap at Newport Beach Brewing Co.
A: Pours a light, golden amber color with a finger of white head.
S: Starts off with plenty of hops. Grass and citrus are evident, especially an orange peel type aroma. A very green nose, perhaps some pine in there too. A touch of brown sugar and a fair amount of bread.
T: Big orange peel flavor on the front end and the grassy hop character carries over to the palate. A slight pine note which provides a decent amount of bitterness. Plenty of malt flavor to this one with bread, toffee, and a small bit of caramel.
M: Medium in body with a moderate to high carbonation.
O: The bitterness became a touch abrasive after awhile which detracted from my enjoyment.

This beer is harsh, dry and somewhat bitter. Its definitely not the better beers from the Flying Dog arsenal. At best this is a mediocre Pale Ale. There are much better options out there. Even on tap, this one didn't deliver very well. I will be hard pressed to choose this one again. I was at a local restaurant with this one, Coors and Miller on draft so I figured to support the local brewery. Sorry I can promote this one further though.

Had this on 2010-05-15 at the Mt Hope Brewfest in PA (from tasting notes)
A - Hazy, dark amber with an offwhite head and good lacing.
S - Floral, sweet malt and some orange.
T - Rising bread, fruit, orange peel bitterness and some earthy hops. Sweet fruit and mild bitter finish.
M - Light body and medium-heavy carbonation give a good feel.
D - Easy enough to drink and the flavors are interesting enough to bring me back for another.

This beer pours a copper slightly lighter than the usual pale ale. The most striking feature of the beer is the hops on the nose. The smell is definitely floral and reminds me of summer grass. After the strong smell, I was a little surprised that the taste is dominated by a slightly sweet maltiness. It does finish dry thanks to the hops, which are relatively benign. Pretty easy drinking session beer.

A: The beer is clear amber in color and has a thin off white head. A light amount of carbonation is visible from the rising bubbles.
S: There are light aromas of toasted malts in the nose along with a little bit of sweetness.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and has some fruity flavors; there are some hints of toasted malts and sweetness.
M: It feels light-bodied and relatively smooth on the palate with a light to moderate amount of carbonation.
D: The beer is rather refreshing and quite sessionable.

This beer was poured into a plastic cup before I corrected the bartender, asking her for a glass. The beer was a dark red-orange color with a well-retained finger-depth head. The smell was hoppy and bready, like the taste. This one was more bitter than I like my pale ales, but to each his own. It had a strong carbonation and was not the beer I settled on.

Having on tap at a bar. This was a bad pour, the glass is effected by cleaning, the draft system is screwy or the beer is old. My glass was presented with no head or carbonation. A flat beer. I am familiar with this beer so I knowit is better that this presentation. That being said the color is right the flavors are spot on for an American pale ale. Toasty malt up front, with a dominant hop finish that is not too powerful, just enough that you know this is a craft brew. Forgive spelling errors, reviewed from iPhone. Desperate for the BA app.

Pours a hazy amberish orange color, disapointing head and retention. Smell is of carmel malts and faint citrus and piney hops, not much going on. Taste is mostly carmel maltss, hops charachter is mostly bitter, lacking any nice citrus or pine notes expected from the style. Comes across more as an Enligh Bitter than an APA. Slight twangy taste to it. Undercarbonated, medium bodied, slightly oily. Disapointing beer which lacks the brightness and nice hop charachter ive come to expect out of an APA.

A clear orange-amber colour fills the glass with a decent looking head that leaves an acceptable amount of lace. Smells of hops and flowers (which i guess is redundant), but not very strongly. The smell is not bad, but it is severely lacking, which hurts it. The taste is completely mediocre. Inoffensive hoppy taste that isn't bad, but does absolutely nothing for me. Medium body that goes down well picks me up a little bit, but overall this a decidedly average beer. I have no desire to have another, and am sad to say that after many great beers by Flying dog, the Doggie Style classic pale ale was a severe disappointment

A : Beer is yellowish brown in clour, with a thick, off white head. Average kind of retention (1cm) which leaves some amount of random lacing
S : Caramel and malt complemented with a robust citrusy hop aroma
T : Well balanced caramel - malt with a deft citrusy hop flavour. A classic Pale Ale taste with a nice bittersweet marriage
M : Smooth & crisp (but not dry, kinda leaves your palate pretty moist, maybe because of the citrus flavour).
D : Tasty and refreshing. With an easy ABV, you could be at it for an entire day's game.

Wow, this was disappointing.
A: Light orange-brown body with small cap on the pour, which disappeared quickly, and therefore could leave no such thing as lacing.
S: Light citrus with underwhelming hop presence.
T: Slightly hoppy with some nutty malt, but overwhelmingly grainy with a slight citrus. The skunk of this beer was shocking. Not that it was overwhelmingly macro-esque, but for a Flying Dog product, it was too much.
M: Mediocre at best.
D: This was the first on-tap beer in a long time that I have not finished. I was shocked, appalled, and most relevantly, disgusted.
I want to blame the bar, but they're normally good with their taps. I'll give it a second chance when possible, but for now, this stands.

Poured a nice copper/orange, with a nice thick head, but it didn't last. The aroma was primarily grapefruit, lemon, and apricot, with a subtle clove hint. The taste yielded all aforementioned citrus and spice flavors fairly prominently, which dissolved into a bitter hoppy finish, and unfortunately a somewhat dry-bitter aftertaste. Nice and medium-bodied, with not much in the way of carbonation, but again the dry aftertaste was a little annoying. At least the dryness keeps you gulping, and after a few pints, you realize that it's a pretty good session beer.

My wife and I went out for dinner last weekend and I decided to give this one a try.
I sent it back.
It was not horrible. it did not melt paint. But my general feeling is that if I am paying six dollars a pint, I want the beer to sit up and then perform for me.
Mouthfeel was thin and there was none of the body I have come to associate with a Pale Ale.

Pours a clear amber into a dimpled mug, with a white head that quickly dies down to just about nothing.
Aroma is one of the best for a pale ale. Tight, leafy/grapefruity aromas that are insanely fresh. Smells like it just got finished dry hopping days ago. Slight smell of sweet grains, just to tell you its a beer and not a hop perfume. This beer really gave my nose its hop fix after a few substandard DIPA's I've had.
Taste is pretty simple, with moderate bitterness and a good hop flavor. Not much else to look for, but it's a pretty straight forward pale ale.
This has a really great mouthfeel, incredibly smooth with a tight bitter finish. This has the smoothness of a good lager. Not to dry and not too sweet. When I was finished, I wanted another but decided to try something new. I could gladly stick to this for an evening.
I've stayed away from flying dog beers but this was really enjoyable. I'll try this on again sometime.
