Didn't expect to find this, but very glad I did. BBD: 09-1996
The 750mL bottle pours placidly into a Straffe Hendrik chalice, ample foam rises and settles to a skim across the top. Sweet, roasty, musty aromas waft from the broad chalice, mostly nutty and dried dark fruit. Raisin and dried plum/prune define the fruity notes.
Taste is dry, roasty malt, residual sweetness. Raisin, prune, plum, & almond all make a strong appearance on the palate. Develops a floral chamomile note late in the tasting. Hard to believe after 10+ years this has this much life to it, but it does.
Dry mouthfeel, but full in flavor. One bottle is a fine session, paired with a smoky cheese. Find and buy/trade if you can.

Caped and corked 750 mL green glass wine bottle Nice hazy dark brown color, slightly red tinted. Nig creamy tan head, looks very sticky, good lacing. Smell has a nice amount of dark fruit, belgian yeast, hops, and some carmel. I will agree with a prior reviewer that some of the fruitiness had been mellowed by age. Slight smoked meat flavor mixes very interestingly with the belgian yeast, and is follwed by a sizable hop character. Mouthfeel leaves a burning tingle in your mouth, very good. I give it extra points for uniqueness, you'd be hard pressed to find a beer that does the same as this.

The beer poured into the chalice deep amber brown with a small bubbled, frothy, moussy and tannish head which coated the glass.
The aroma was caramel and chocolate with deep dark fruit aromas of plum, prune and raisins. A deep darkened caramel note emerged as the beer warmed and the Belgian characteristics of a well aged beer emerged.
The flavor was interesting. It had a definite cork character to the flavor with a distinct and pronounced bittering component. The dark fruit flavors remained but were well aged and muted. Some spiciness emerged in the flavor as the beer warmed. Dark caramel and chocolate flavors blended well and added complexity. As the beer warmed and more character emerged, the corked flavor was less and less evident and the other flavors became more complex.
The finish was dry with lasting muted dark fruits, caramel and chocolate lasting long into the aftertaste. The body was medium and the carbonation level was pretty high, a huge rush of CO2 escaped as the cork was removed. The alcohol was restrained in the aroma and more distinct in the flavor and actually almost burned in the throat and left a definite warming after consumption.
750 ml green bottle (didn't look green till you pour the beer). The bottle was capped and corked. The only indicator of any sort of date was an inked L284 on the front label. This beer has been in the stash for several years, I see the earliest review was 2001 and this beer was probably purchased at least that long ago...

This bottle was not dated, but it was over 10 years, tasted at De Gans in Huise. Appearance: Reddish brown, very clear. Large head with good retention. Aroma: Nutty, bitter, very malty. Flavor: Sherry flavors; malty, some nutty, roasty malt flavors, and a substantial and still apparent hop bitterness. Finish is malty, again nutty, with some hoppiness apparent.

The beer pours a deep sanguineous color, the head mastodonic in size, spumous in texture, beige in color, with velvety sheets of lace to cling lovingly to the glass. Nose is malt, caramel, somewhat fruity, quite a pleasure to Sniff. An over ripe banana sweetness at the start, top is sleek, the finish is prominently acidic, sparingly hopped, with a dry lightly tart and long lasting aftertaste. Quite a drinkable beer, not the greatest dobbel, but certainly worth a sample for the Belgian Lovers.

Presentation: 750 ml champagne magnum that was corked, capped and gold foiled. No freshness date to be found. Label depicts a medieval parchment picture of an older label.
Appearance: Bold reddish hues within a sleeve of brown for colour. The head is quite beautiful with a whipped creamy meringue light tan head, the head is unwavering and thick and sticky on the glass. Head retention is absolutely remarkable.
Smell: Even tartness with suggestions of lemon and granny smith apples, hints of vanilla and exotic fruit as well as some evident alcoholic esters. Smells of brownies, blondies and lemon cookies in the same oven.
Taste: Supple creamy and smooth, firm and well built medium body with a loosely crisp carbonation. Malty is an understatement, massive flavours of malt engulf the palate with a well positioned creamy sweetness. Toasted malt and a playful fruitiness entice the taste buds, alcohol is certainly noticeable. Touch of black pepper, lemon and an earthy yeast. Light toasted husk flavour with some breadiness show yet another level of the malt in this brew. Some alcoholic esters and a very faint solvent flavour come through, fruitiness shows some ripened pineapple and apple skin. Hops bring a light yet balanced bitterness to the table, mildly soft phenols leave traces of medicinal and herbal flavour middle to end. Phenols and alcoholic esters clean the palate in the real nice creamy finish.
Notes: Hot damn, a dubbel that tweaks the fancy. Malty beyond belief, this dubbel borders the old bruin style a bit with a non-stop show of malt, malt and malt. Of course it has a whole sideshow of flavours but the malt steals the show. Primo stuff here.
