On tap at Dog Street Pub in Williamsburg. Perhaps it was that drinking this was an alternative to shopping with my girlfriend. But most likely, it was the quality that gives this such a good review. Such a classic quad: well balanced, rich and complex, barely a hint of its strong abv, and absolutely delicious going down. I think I'll have to buy one of DoG's awesome growlers and fill it with this. Worth the trip.

On tap at a bar overlooking a Bruges canal on a cool November Saturday afternoon.
A-Served in a chalice this brew is dirty, ruddy brown with a skimming of tan head with very nice lacing.
S-Delicious aromas of toasted malt and lots of sweet esters coming through.
T-A match for the aroma, nothing really stands out. Gets more interesting towards the bottom as the beer warms a bit.
M-For 12% ABV this is outstanding. A warming finish but not at all overpowering. Medium bodied for such a big beer.
O-A really nice beer. Fermented out this beer finishes dry with a nice estery Belgian yeast character and sweet toasted malt flavor. The strength is well hidden. Lacks the complexity in taste of a St. Bernardus or Westy quad but still an excellent beer.

A - Prune and red - murky.

S - Cooked pitted fruits, prunes, raisins.

T - Burnt fruit reduction, heavy cooked fruits, boozy.

M - Big , boozy, large beer. Good carb, ok balance considering the ABV and strong attributes.

D - Awesome huge beer. Not sessionable, but would have again.

A - Has a dark copper color with a cloudy sediment. 1 finger head that remained to the end.

S - In the nose there is plum and cherry apparent mixed with the scent of the alcohol

T - This beer has a sweet barley-winesque flavor that is fruit forward with a very modest finish.

M - moderate to low carbonation, smooth

O - I found this beer enjoyable. While the alcohol is apparent in the nose I did not find it overwhelming in the flavor. The finish was the highlight of this beer for me because it leaves your palate with only a lingering flavor. This made me want more.

On tap at Sessions in Greensboro.Poured into a tulip glass a deep amber color with a fluffy tightly formed one finger off white head that lasted for quite awhile.Raisin and plum notes in the nose along with lighter yeasty spice and brown sugar.Dark fruit dominates the palate with some medicinal notes,the alcohol is heavy and pretty sweet.It's a nice sipper but the yeast and alcohol can be a bit much....for me.

In draft at the source. Poured into Malhuer chalice/tulip. Creamy off-white head, high retention. Dark, dark ruby, almost black. Aroma, dates, light roast, almost chocolate sweetness. Taste creamy, coffee, chocolate malty sweet, creamy goodness. Excellent. Totally delicious.

An 5 ounce pour into a Gulden Drak tulip glass at the Horse & Hound in Charlottesville. From notes. Reviewed 8 July 2011.

A: HUGE head fills half the glass. Off-white/beige. Very dark and not susceptible to light. Some bubbles coat the sides of the glass.

S: Green apple Jolly Ranchers. Seriously. Not much else.

T: A bit flat/underwhelming. Having sampled a truly horrendous Maredsous Tripel (which I quite enjoyed from the bottle) on-tap at the same establishment, I suspect the bar is the issue more than the beer. Quite sweet, very big, noticeable alcohol. Periously close to reminding me cough syrup. Purple grapes. Not a great quad, but serviceable. I'd like to dry it from the bottle.

M: Meh. Disappointingly flat. Slightly sticky. I'd like more carbonation.

O: A good beer, that I'd like to try again some place else. At this juncture, I can't recommend it.

On-tap into 20cl fest stemware at Beer Passion Weekend 2011 in Antwerp, Belgium. Reviewed from notes.

A: Three finger tan colour head of nice fluffy cream, fair thickness, and decent retention. Dark amber colour.

Sm: Amber hops. A mild scent. Maybe some darker fruit esters.

T: Amber hops, dark fruit ester hops, and bittering hops. Caramelized malt is present and well handled. Fairly complex. Decently built and balanced.

Mf: smooth and wet, with adequate coarseness to bring out the flavours. Fairly complementary of the flavours in the body.

Dr: Fair price, pretty drinkable, and low quality for the style.

On-tap at Pizza Port Ocean Beach

A: The beer pours a dark brown color with a finger or two of creamy, khaki colored head.

S: A bit fruit aroma to this beer. Lots of banana accompanied by raisins, cherries, plums, and perhaps figs. Plenty of sugar character in the form of toffee, caramel, and candy sugar. A bit of alcohol is certainly there, too.

T: A ton of banana flavor which is really quite nice. There is still a lot of dark fruit character here along with the typical intense sugar notes of a Quad. Lots of caramel, candi sugar, molasses, and maybe just a bit of roast.

M: The body is medium with a moderate to high level of carbonation.

D: Surprisingly easy to drink and very little booze apparent on the palate.

A

La Trappe. Dark dark mahogany with a dense frothy head.

Unmistakable aroma of a quad but perhaps a bit extra roasty and faint chocolate to my surprise plus some earth for good measure.

Delicious. Strong vinous characteristics. Very smooth on the tongue, creamy and rich. The alcohol is contradictory in that it is obvious yet well restrained and only slightly warming, very deceptive.

The dark fruits of a quad are hard to beat and this is a contender. Notes of a stout, born to be sipped.

On tap at O'Brien's, San Diego.

Pours a dark black/brown color with barely any film. Dark malt aroma with some sugary spices. Malty taste, with the addition of dark fruits like fig, date, and plum. Mild carbonation, and medium-bodied. This is an ok beer, but it doesn't particularly impress me in the flavor department... seems to be missing a bit of the spices in the taste.

On tap at the Trappist in Oakland. Got it on a whim and had no idea what to expect. Was pleased.

Served in a goblet with about half foam half beer. Deep ruby ink with a lingering head. Smelled sweet and malty, a typical quad aroma. Dessert-like.

Same flavor as the nose, just very very tasty, without anything offensive marring it. Not on the level of something like the Trappist Rochefort 10 nor as good as the St. Bernardus Abt 12, because it really lacks the depth and complexity that makes those beers so enjoyable. I'd say sweetness is what dominates this beer.

Washes down pretty well, and not overly carbonated. A bit heavy to be drinking much of it. Then again this was towards the end of the night and I was a little saturated.

I had this on draft at the Amsterdam Ale House, thinking i'd never had it before and then i discovered I had it in a bottle recently.

My previous review:
Dark brown appearance with a great light tan head. A lot of yeast presence in the beer visually with an amazing dark fruit aroma and flavor. This is a beer i won't forget too soon. Dark fruit upfront with a caramel after taste. At this alcohol by volume i need to be careful but I would highly recommend this beer.

This is a little less yeasty than the bottle version but the strength is still very present. A good beer bur for later at night.

On-tap at the Brick Store.

Pours a slightly hazy dark amber color with a half-finger slightly off-white head. The head recedes into a wispy layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of sweet and mildly dark malts with good amounts of sugar-coated medium fruits. The fruit aromas are mostly pears but with hints of figs and golden raisins. Also present are bready yeast aromas.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Sweet and dark malts with smooth Belgian candi sugar flavors kick things off. Shortly thereafter pear and golden raisin flavors join in with hints of green apple and indistinct darker fruits. Midway through the sip hints of nutmeg and brown sugar kick in and carry through to a mildly crisp ending.

Mouthfeel is good. It's got a slick thickness with soft carbonation.

Drinkability is also good. I finished my glass with no problems and could have another.

Overall I thought this was a solid beer but it was more of a BSDA than a quad - it just didn't have the thickness and heavier malt profile of the latter. Still, a decent beer that's worth a shot.

On tap from naja's - poured into a Snifter.
The pour is a dark brown color with a very small off white head. The flavor is amazingly complex. Starts off with sweet molasses flavors and goes all over the place. Chocolate, dark fruit sweet flavors everywhere. Finished with a nice floral hop finish and just the right amount of bitterness. Fairly thin for its complexity and alc. content. Goes down amazingly easy for 12 percent. Loved it. Will be seeking it in the near future.

Pours a rich, opaque dark-chocolate brown with a nice fine-bubbled light tan head. Aroma is malty and has an overtone of hard cider. Malty flavor has a strong fruity and brandy-like tone, as well as a hint of chocolate and just a whisper of sweetness. Texture is smooth and quite fizzy.

Had on tap @ Armsby Abbey, and I kicked it (sorry everyone else).

A: Light fluffy head fades fairly quickly over semi clear dark ruby brown colored beer.

N: Slight boozy, dark Belgian malts and candi sugar dominate. Then comes some fruit, raisin, fig, plum, etc. Lots of malts. I even get a hint of peppermint.

T: Very sweet, crazy sweet! Thick and slightly syrupy, boozy, warming alcohol but no real alc sting. It even tastes boozy. WIth that is candi sugar, lots, molasses, lots of Belgian malts, more fruits with plum, fig, raisin, and even apricot. Slight nutty taste with the malty taste, and a little minerality. Some bitterness too.

M: Semi thick and a little syrupy, lower but decent carbonation.

F: Still very sweet lingering but it gets a slight dryness. Some creamy taste lingering, not really boozy anymore. More lingering raisin and a touch of smoke. Despite having a boozy taste and warmth there was no alcohol burn or real feel otherwise. And way too sweet.

The beer pours a fairly dark cola color with minimal head retention, but OK lacing. I get something of a rootbeer and brown sugar aroma, coupled with some light spice. The sweet, rich, flavor profile is much more intense and impressive, with chocolate, rootbeer, nutmeg and allspice. There are dark fruits as well in this spicey quad. Mouthfeel is medium bodied to full, and the finish is fairly long. Drinkability is pretty good for the abv., though you can tell this is a big beer.

An excellent, well crafted Belgian quad.

3 yr old 12 oz bottle poured into snifter

Given to me by local bartender that called it a pleasant surprise/mistake that these had aged and compared it to Westy.

Deep amber/almost purple darkness in the hue with a 1/4 inch bright white head.

Smell has a bit of dankness and sharpness almost like a raw cheese.

There is so much flavor playing in perfect harmony. Deep fruits almost like dried plums and raisins blend with a bright carbonated mouthfeel that ignites the booziness that is incredibly hidden for 12%. I'm not veteran enough to understand the flavors at play, but understand that it is supremely delicious and the best Quad I've had. Age these with care and you'll have a beer worthy of high regard.

This monster, with horns and fangs, that someone in Belgium decided to call a beer, pours a dark, cloudy brown that barely allows light through. The head poured a legitimate 4 inches and settled to a 1/2 inch after about 10 minutes. Lacing is decent against the glass.

The smell of this brew is like two raisins, covered in brown sugar, drank brandy all night and then got into a brawl in the alleyway outside of the bar...after neither one could call himself the victor, they self immolated, and that is where the toasty character of the brew comes in to play.

The taste is strong and complex. Sweet, pungent fruit (raisins) then sweet malt (brown sugar, maybe caramel) is followed by a toasted barley and balanced bitter flavor. The smell and the taste are absolutely connected. Spice is very hard to place...

Mouthfeel is smooth and heavy. Carbonation can't live in the realm of 12% ABV, at least in this bottle. Taste lingers for a VERY long time on the tongue, the scent permeates the nose and lingers as well - inescapable!

Overall this beer is a beast. Strong, complex, flavorful, and well balanced.

750ml bottle into a snifter

A: Pours a very dark brown with almost three fingers of thick off white head. Great lacing and retention.

S: Dried apricots, orange bitters, nutmeg, and a bit of peppercorn. A bit brighter with less dark fruits than I'm used to for the style, but still quite nice.

T: Sweeter than I thought it'd be based on the aroma. Plums start off with a bit of prunes. Quite peppery as well without as much of the brighter apricot and orange I got from the aroma. A tad soapy.

M: Medium thickness with a nice, strong carbonation.

O: Not a bad Quad, it has a nicely complex aroma and a decent flavor, it just doesn't stand up with some the heavy hitters of the style.

Bottle dated best before 10/11. Aged at least two years, enjoyed 3/13.

This pours a ruddy dark raisin color with light foam.

There’s an aroma of dark fig, raisin, caramel, and brown sugar.

It has an interesting flavor. I pick up some more malty sweetness, caramel, fig and date puree, and a light rum note. Still retains its carbonation. Definitely a sipper.

Very dark brown appearance, toward black. Tan head with nice lacing. Sweet ripe fruit and dark sugar kind of smell. You get a lot of wheats and malts at first, then the lovely sweet dark and ripe fruits, towards cherry, with a full well bodied sweet dark notes toward the finish with a nice dark fruit linger.

This one is a keeper for sure. People told me about Rochefort 10 or St. Bernardus Abt 12, which seem to be very popular and highly rated and aren't bad, but this beer beats those by a mile. It's full of big flavors and aroma's with many layers and a much original flavor signature and balance to me.

A - Very dark cherry in color and nearly opaque. Thick two finger head that dissipates relatively quickly.

S - Sweet yet thin, and slightly tart; think cherries, dates, raisins.

T - Pretty consistent with it's aroma - dark and sweet fruits and a bit malty as well.

M - Medium viscosity, slightly sharp in the nose, however the alcohol is pretty well hidden considering the percentage. Chocolate and darker notes more apparent upon finish and as the beer becomes warmer.

Yet to have a quad that blows my mind, this one was no exception. Regardless, I consider this a great beer and enjoyed the whole bottle from start to finish. For the price and given the availability, the likelihood of purchasing this beer again for me is high.

Poured from 33cl bottle into St. Bernardus chalice. Thank you Kendall!

A. Pours a well carbonated 2+ finger head. Good retention. Decent lacing. Color is very dark brown, almost indistinguishable from black.

S. Big yeasty malty aroma. Dark fruit, brown sugar, candi sugar. Sweet smelling. Like the smell of this one quite a bit.

T. Dark fruit, candi sugar sweetness, caramel, belgian yeast. Overall nice sweetness, takes the stage. Not the most complex flavors for a quad. Raisins, figs, brown sugar. Even though it is not overly complex, it is incredibly smooth for 12%. Really delicous despite, not being the best quad. Get a little punch of spice on the back of the tongue on one of my sips.

M. Full bodied. Meidum carbonation. Lingering sweetness.

O. Good aroma. Excellent sweet Belgian delciousness for flavor. Good full mouthfeel. Its not the epitome of the worlds best quads, but this is some really good beer.
