A: As this is poured, a wonderful cascading effect appears and leaves a two finger head on top of the dark brown/black body. Hardly any lace though.
S: Some sweet bready malt and a bit of hop bitterness. Oats and chocolate come through as well. The aroma could be a more robust.
T: Bready malt again with some oats and chocolate as the taste lingers. This follows the nose pretty closely, and like the nose I wish it was more robust.
M/D: A bit thin and watery, but this is a very smooth and easy to drink stout.

This is a nice quaffable stout that I enjoyed at the Ginger Man in Houston. This is not the best stout I have ever had, but good none the less.

Served in a 20oz imperial pint at Map Room 9/22/07.

A: Black, black, black. One finger head of pure cream. Wonderful looking cascade.

S: Mainly a roasted malt aroma with with some bitter dark chocolate and/or cocoa thrown in for good measure.

T: Pretty complex flavors of roasted chocolate malt, bitter hops, and overripe dark fruit (raisins and plums come to mind).

M: Pure velvety cream at first that takes an unexpected, yet welcome, bitter and spicy turn towards the finish.

D: A wonderful session stout!

Poured a deep oily black hue with a two finger creamy tan head. There was excellent retention and sticky lacing.

The smell featured a light burnt grain with a mild sweetness.

The taste consisted of an upfront burnt grain with a good coffee element. There was a nice residual smokiness as well.

The mouthfeel was full and very smooth.

Overall a superior stout. Beautiful setup, excellent flavor profile and superior drinkability.

(Served in an nonic)

A- This beer had a creamy tan head with a jet black body which separated in the famous nitro-tap style.

S- This beer has a chocolate malt hint that was smooth but the aroma was pretty faint.

T- This beer has a creamy pot caramel note with some dark malt flavors that were smooth. There was a faint bittering hops note that came through after it had warmed quite a bit.

M- This beer had a full creamy mouthfeel with a slight watery quality to the finish. The head added to the mouthfeel with each sip.

D- This beer has a thin mellow flavor and not much of interest or complexity.

On nitro tap at the Flying Saucer Houston.

Deep, deep black in color, sporting a big, thick, creamy, light tan head. Mmmm....

The nose is faint, flinty, mineral... light...

Flavors open up sweet and tart, a hint of bubblegum, then things turn creamy, roasty, finishing with a surprisingly strong bitterness, derived from a deft combo of soft English hops and roasted grain astringency. All of this imparts a pleasant bitter feel in the back of the mouth.

YOS is smooth and easy, pretty danged good, but not outrageously so...

This is an all around great stout. It is very bitter, yet very smooth. Great mouthfeel, the carbonation excited my mouth and there was a little bit of foam head at the top throughout the entire session of drinking. I highly recommend this beer. Looks thick and black in appearance, there is no seeing through it. This beer couldn't be any better.

On tap at Delaney's tap room. Big 2 inch frothy, creamy head poking over the top of the glass. Very dark brown to a blackish beer.
Smell: Smokey, slightly sweet, faint chocolate type aroma.
Taste: Very nicely balanced great tasting beer. Big smoked character, definatley can taste an oatmeal type flavor that fades into a chocolate type undertone. There is a very light hop flavor that is a bit bitter/sour in the very end. The flavor left in my mouth was a very hearty one. The smokey character, oatmeal, and chocolate undertone blend together quite nicely to that slight hop character.
This is a thick and rich beer but its hearty thick characteristics dont really take away from its drinkability. All and all a good beer!

Ordered this beer at the Moan and Dove last night not knowing what to expect. It's basically a Guinness in disguise. Very similar - nice coffee colored appearance, bit of milky head on top(I didn't catch any cascading effect though). Smells pretty nondescript, but some nice malt characteristics in there. Taste is nice, maybe a little sweeter than Guinness. I don't really mean to be comparing the two, but they're very similar. Real smooth and creamy mouthfeel, medium bodied I'd say. And of course very drinkable. A nice alternative.

A nice addition to Brixx Pizza, pours a creamy black with a some reddish tint with a creamy nitro head.Aroma is on the sweeter side with some dark roast coffe thrown in,what a smooth creamy mouthfeel near perfect.Taste has a nice big bitterness up front but becomes more tame as u drink more some dark roast coffeee and ubsweetened chocolate with anice underlying softness.Man how drinkable is this beer on nitro damn I could drink this all night and did.

What a beautiful beer! Wonderful cascading in the foam. A light tan creamy head that is so perfect that when I took a sip it was like whipped cream! A true luxury among beers! A dark brown beer that is dark without appearing black. The head lasted the entire pint and light lacing graced the glass froim rim to bottom. This one is a winner.

Smell is light roastiness with a creamy coffee profile. Pleasant and no hop aroma detected. Spot on for the style.

Taste is exceptional. This is not a behemoth beer, mind you, but a wonderfully balanced stout that juggles creamy coffee, roasty nut, and a light milk chocolate taste. A slightly roasty-bitter aftertaste cleans up. Beautiful. I did not expect this at all!

Mouthfeel is next to exceptional. I get a full-bodied creaminess where carbonation is more downy or silky than actually perceptible as bubbles. Only drawback is a thin wateriness on the edges. Still very, very nice.

I could drink these all night. I wish I has a nitro-tap of this in the house. Great, great beer.

The beer pours with a rich, lavish dark brown cascade, finally settling into an opaque black. A thick dollop of cream colored head blankets the beer, lasting forever in typical nitro fashion. Loads of sticky lace cling to the glass, completely obscuring the empty space within.
The aroma is absolutely delicious. Warm, inviting oatmeal mellowness smooths out mocha scented roasted malt. A bit of pure cocoa, with some mashy grain odor. Faint plum and pear esters settle over the malt. Perhaps a touch of bready yeast, but it's difficult to tell. A bit thin from the nitro, but no noticable metallic odors. Very smooth and supple, the aromas blending together as one.
The flavor starts out exceptionally smooth. This is one of those beers that I take a sip of, and immediately need to take another. The oatmeal is immediately apparent, lending a soft, lactic smoothness throughout. Mild roasted malt settles in for the ride, producing rich coffee and chocolate flavor throughout. Some fruitiness becomes apparent on the top of the tongue, mostly over-ripe plum and a suggestion of pear. The hops are very mild, almost nonpresent, adding a slight earthy bitterness to the finish, coupled with a yeasty flavor reminiscent of cookie dough. Milk Coffee and oatmeal rest on the tongue, sticking around long into the aftertaste. A touch of hazelnut towards the end of the pint. Medium bodied, with smooth, easy drinking nitro carbonation.
One of my favorite nitro beers. Sursprisingly flavorful, the malt and oatmeal seem to survive the nitro pour well. No tinny flavor. A very smooth, easy drinking stout. Not the most complex, but it's a great session beer. I don't care for the canned version much, but on tap it's fine by me.

I've enjoyed this beer many times at Bentley's in Champaign, a new bar thats modeled to look like an English pub, but finally got around to reviewing it.

Can't see through the pitch black oblivion with a firm creamy, khaki head perched on top. Smell is fantanstic with strong notes of burnt coffee and roasted malt.
Taste is creamy, though the mouthfeel is a tad on the thin side but no so much it hurts the experience. Taste is again roasted malt and burnt coffee but also hints of bitter dark chocolate come in. A wee bit of alcohol can also be detected if the beer is let to linger on the tongue.

This beer has always been one of my faves to sip pints of when out with friends. It is a superior stout to the others I typically see out (Murphy's, Guiness, Beamish, etc.) I think the nitro-tap is best, then the bottle, then the draft can.

I was the hugest fan of Young's while studying in London in 2003. I haunted many a Young's public house, and my collection only has a few cellared beers - including the Young's Special London. So i'm a wee-bit biased.

That being said, the only Young's in this area are the Oatmeal Stout and Double Chocolate stout, in the hefty close-to-bomber bottle. I recently found a pub that sells the Oatmeal! Rejoice!

This beer pours a generic stout ruby, with a nice tan nitro head. No lacing throughout the beer. The taste starts with a nice roasted malt flavor, then moves into a sweet, slightly sour blend. Nothing to remind you that this in fact an oatmeal beer. A nice malty flavor finishes up the beer, but a not-too-special offering from Young's. Definetely along the lines of a classic British stout instead of the American counterpart.

If you are looking for a great introductory British stout, here it is. But for those of us spoiled with the variety of stouts (especially 3Floyd's Dark Lord) in this country, you might want to keep looking. Especially for the price.

But my palate still seeks the satisfaction I was rewarded with almost everyday in a nice Young's AAA from the cask...

This stout poured a very dark brown (almost black) with creamy, tan foam that was very long-lasting. The smell was mildly malty with a hint of fruitiness. The taste was sweet: caramel malt, cocoa, some banana, and some hoppy bitterness in the finish. The mouthfeel was very smooth and creamy with medium body and modest carbonation feel. Overall a nicely enjoyable stout.

An astonishingly great stout. The head retention on this brew is simply amazing. As the DD, I only had the one beer last night, and I took plenty of time with it. But a half-inch layer of head remained atop my beer for the entire time period. Creamy, milky, vanilla sweet aromas. Very light roasted aromas buried underneath. Fluffy like a milkshake. Very light roasted finish that lingers just a bit. Spectacularly easy to drink -- full-bodied, yet creamy and not overbearing. Very nice.

Beer was served pitch black with a beautiful thick frothy tan stout head. Smell was toasted malts, oats, chocolate and cream. Taste is a creamy texture, of dark chocolate, smooth toasted malts, and dark roasted coffee beans in the back. Very small hop presence, but still there. Finishes with a bit of dryness, and nice aftertaste.

The flavor wasn’t intense but seems like a solid drinking stout, and my wife's new favorite. They almost go back to easy.

On tap at Croxley Ales in Franklin Square, New York.

Appearance: Dark opaque black/brown with thick tan head.

Smell: Toffee and Chocolate.

Taste: Initial toffee and chocolate flavors. This was followed by a metallic taste that I did not like at all. A nice nutty flavor also came through. Unfortunately, the metallic taste ruined the taste of this beer for me because the other flavors were otherwise very good.

Mouthfeel: Very creamy (due to the nitro draught) but also somewhat thin.

Drinkability: The metallic taste hurt the drinkability for me.

Black in color with a faint brownish hue near the bottom of the pint. The nitro-induced head is full, very creamy appearance and tan in color. The head retention is excellent with very good lacing. The aroma provides a hint of fruitiness and caramel maltiness. The taste is noticeably smooth and silky mouthfeel which is primarily provided by the nitro-induced carbination. The flavor is of a delicate fruity, caramel malt with some distinctive vanilla overtones. A subtle milk chocolate matliness and an underlying hop bitterness is also apparent. The finish is soft, with an underlying bittersweet chocolate roastiness. Even with the artifically induced, nitro-carbonation, it may have smooth, soft mouthfeel, but appears a little thin in texture than other stouts. I still found it to be a very drinkable and enjoyable beer.

I am extremely fond of desserts and have a major sweet tooth, which is why this beer fascinated me from the very beginning. The aroma is surely chocolate and coffee, sounds delicious! The flavours are also pretty sweet, chocolatey and a bit of licorice. I am looking forward to using this when I whip up my next chocolate based dessert!

Poured from bottle (no date) into english pint. Pours a black appearance. Very creamy white head. A pretty ridiculous amount of very thick lacing. Roasted malt aromas, grain, caramel, slight chocolate, and an overall feeling of cereal. Sweet, grainy malt flavors. Big-time oatmeal. Chocolate, too. Body is smooth and creamy. Easy drinking, and balanced well.

Reviewed from notes:
A- Very dark, black in fact, with a thin, yet persistant tan head.
S- Coffee, roasted malt, some dark chocolate. Something of a smoke smell exists as well.
T- Roasted malt, with dark chocolate, coffee, charcoal, and just a faint hint of hops. Very well balanced and great flavor thoroughout.
M- Gentle carbonation and creamy. That oatmeal really smooths this one out.
D- Not too heavy for the style and rather drinkable. One of my favorite stouts and certaintly one of the better oatmeal stouts out there.

Pours solid black with creamy dense off-white head till the side of the glass, lacing fully covers the sides of the glass and it arranges itself layers afters each sip, simply beautiful. Aroma is weak roasted malt with some sourness, slightly soapy.

Taste is sweetish roasted malt with notes of chocolate that dominate over bitterness, long lingering bittery aftertaste, medium-dry finish. Mouthfeel is creamy and thick, low carbonation.

Very good looking beer with excellent flavour qualities.

500 mL bottle,

A: Pours black with a soft but firm tan head, full lace immediately and all the way down the glass. Great looking pint.

S: Sweet notes of fermented oats, brown sugar, hint of smoke and chocolate.

T: Sweet milk chocolate and oats, classic flavours for this style simply put. Creamed coffee mid-palate, gets a little more bitter burnt charcoal of a flavour at the finish, but a sweet beer overall.

M: Not cloying from the sweetness which I liked, creamy and smooth, medium/full-bodied even. A bit of acridity at the end prevents me from taking it to the next level.

D: The bottles still in the US are holding up well, I just wish Young's would come back with their full lineup, I miss them.

Bomber into an English pint glass. The pour is dark black with some light through the edges. The aroma is some sweet with a dash of sour and a good drop of salty soy. The flavor has many layers, starting with sweet and a bit of sour followed by chocolate, salty soy, and smooth cream. The mouthfeel is carbonated but smooth and slick, going down easy.
