I tried this place out after having it recommended to me from a coworker. I'm really glad I did. The location is perfect for people watching, taking a break from shopping, or just hanging out. Tons of locals were there (which is always a good sign), and the wait staff spoke English very well.
There's a variety of German specialties to enjoy as well as the great, fresh beer. I'd recommend the pils and the hefeweizen. Brewed on site, this may be some of the freshest beer you've ever had. You'll really enjoy it if you venture down into the beer cellar, too; stone walls, low lighting, and lots of ambiance. This is a definite revisit each time I'm in the area.

Never actually made it inside this establishment but I sat outside at one of the pick nick tables to soak in the sun after a long flight. I ended up having a Jagerschnitzle and a whole bunch of Hefeweizen while watching locals stroll around the Maketplatz. The Hefeweizen was good but didn't really stand out too much from the average. Food was likewise good, but unremarkable. I suppose the service was OK by European standards but, when I went back for lunch, the Germans at our table had to get up to chase down the waiter. Not somewhere I'd recommend if you're in a hurry, but otherwise a good spot.
For all I know, the inside could be a whole different story.

Located in the Center of Darmstadt on the Market Place, this is a fine replication of a traditional American Brew Pub. Established in 1989, this pub has a funny atmosphere because its basically a German replication of an American replication of a German pub. The locals who first brought me here described it that way saying, You have to see our American brew pub.
At any rate, the concept may be American but the brews are strictly Deutsch and they are good. The hells lager is nicely hopped and unfiltered. The special dark is deliciously malty and smooth. The hefeweiss is decent but the winter seasonal Cronator is their best.
My favorite thing about the Brauhaus is the cute glassware. They serve all their brews in the proper glassware even when you order a sampler. Seriously, theyve got 4 oz weizen, pilsner, stange, and stein glasses. Theyre great.
If you make it to Hessen, I highly recommend a trip to the Brauhaus.
