This place made me homesick for such NY bars as The Gate and The Blind Tiger. Great atmosphere. It feels like a true local bar. Wooden tables, old bottles & kegs lining the walls, and mellow vibe make for a wonderful watering hole. They also have table top Ms Pac Man and an old Star Wars pinball game. And a pool table. Good service, good music.

The selection is only slightly better than mediocre. They have Fitzoy Pale and Amber on tap, as well as Matilda Bay Alpha Pale. The have some decent bottles, too.

This is a great place to swing in for a few pots, but don't expect a big beer scene. I felt a bit out of place asking about their selection, but the bar staff were very cool.

the labour in vain is a nice mix of old and new, paticualrly in terms of decor. has a lot of old style aussie looks about it, with some more modern looking furniture. the clientele is also a mix of old and young, the sort of place all kinds can pop in for a drink, and often do.

ill pay them this too. theres always a broad selection of tunes playing. i may not like them all, but they play enuff of what i like to keep me happy. i can only imagine this is the same for others. the other thing i like about this place is its busy without ever being jam packed.

and when the fitzroy pale and amber are on, i can happily settle in here for the evening. alas its all down hill after those two in the selection department.

cool with out being too cool for its own good (like so many melbourne bars are these days), the labour in vain is an unpretentious pub that has enuff going for it to make it worth the while swinging by when in the neighbourhood.
