Cask. Dark amber. Slight haze. Thin frothy head.
Dark fruit and malt aroma.
Hop forward. Malt is raised in the flavour. Some treacle. Bitter finish.
Soft carbonation.
Different to most milds.
Feb 2024 - now described as a black session IPA.

Presentation: The second pint of the afternoon during a crawl of the Calder Valley with a handful of friends was at the Shepherds Rest in Sowerby Bridge, a Pub recently acquired by the Ossett Brewery. After a Pint of Ossett Santiam, The Shepherds Rest has a permanent (but changing) Mild, and as a fan and supporter of this style I decided to hit up this option. The Mild during our visit was listed on the Blackboard as Titanic Black Ice at 4.1% and £2.00 Pint.
Some research on the Titanic Website has the brew listed as follows:
February-March.
Black Ice A.B.V. 4.1%
Still deep in the grip of Winter this sumptuous warming beer is sufficiently well hopped to provide balance, which can come in handy when there`s black ice around!
Appearance: Dark black body with a finger deep firm creamy head that was tight throughout the drink. Looked a little like a pint of the black stuff, you know the G beer. Stiff ring lacing was memorable.
Nose: Roasted malts with a feint hop aroma. Mild strength nose with a comforting nutty backdrop.
Taste: The malts are the backbone here, but there is a gentle contribution from the hops which balances. Some black liquorice in this one, it perfectly matches the malts and bitterness. Retains a Dark Mild personality with pumped up roasted malts and balancing hops. Very nice!
Mouthfeel: Firm conditioning with an oh sooo smoooth and intensely creamy body. Full bodied but light in nature.
Drinkability: Sinks easy and goes down faster than the Titanic ..sorry couldnt resist that.
Overall: An excellent full strength Dark Mild style brew that pleases. Recommended.
