I tried a variety of homebrew shops when I first started brewing, but I keep on returning to the local shops because we've got some of the best shops in the nation here in Minnesota. Midwest is no exception. Quality is top-notch. Midwest seems to do a lot of mailorder, so their grain, hops and yeast are always fresh and thankfully in-stock. In-store service is always good, too. The place is staffed by enthusiastic brewers who are friendly and willing to lend a hand. The selection is great, too. I haven't made a kit in a while, but I made 7-8 of Midwest's kits when I first started brewing and despite my novice skillset, the beers came out great. They carry a variety of beer kits to suit all tastes. Their grain, hop and yeast selection cover all of the bases and they've always had everything I've needed for just about every recipe. The equipment selection is also quite good, with everything from kegging equipment to grain mills to Better Bottles. Overall, a really great shop.

Atmosphere was just like a Sam's Club warehouse only with better, cooler stuff. Wide open spaces, whole room just for grain where you can make your own bags of different grains.
Quality of the temperature controller that I bought so far is very good.
Service was good, I was able to grab someone and get right to what I wanted to buy that day after roaming around without any problems. The person that helped me also talked to me on the way out.
Great selection compared to anything else not in giant warehouse form.
Once you get to realize where everything is and the large selection of wine stuff the whole place doesn't seem as big, but it has lots of great beer books based on style and all of the basic books like "The Joy of Home Brewing."

Online prices looked good. Shipping was a little high but I could live with that. However it took over a week for them to ship my order! And worst of all no communication that shipping was going to be delayed. If they had send me an email saying "bummer but one of you items is back ordered but its due in soon we should be able to ship on XXX date" I would have been OK.
But to just go dark? Just a bad attitude. There are plenty of other places with pricing in the same range but with excellent shipping and customer communication ethics.

BUYER BEWARE! - You Have been warned.
Long shipping times... some of my orders have taken up to a week to ship!
Deceptively low prices... The prices seem low, until you factor in the HUGE shipping costs! They claim they do not price gouge on shipping... but that is kind of hard to believe when you ship a paper thin stick-on liquid thermometer Priority Mail for $8! Really? I could ship this for $5 priority mail with tracking. So it begs the question, why can't they?
As far as selection is concerned: They advertise "complete kits", when they are anything but. Kits are missing essential items, like spoons, brushes and more.
Here are my last three order experiences. Starting in December of 2012 on through March 2013.
Order #1> An Item arrived broken, took a MONTH to get a replacement.
Order #2> A keg I ordered was rinsed and packaged while it was still wet and full of water. (other items in the package were soaking wet from the keg) - Buckets were dirty on the outside, dusty and had mystery black stains on the INSIDE of them that could not be removed. I also ordered a cheese kit that arrived incomplete, it was missing a mold, upon checking the invoice I found a hardly legible "backordered" scrawled onto the paper near the missing item. I was never notified that the item was on backorder also my account did not reflect this information, nor was I ever notified of when to expect shipment. Further, I was never notified when it did ship. Only after contacting the company myself did I get any answers at all.
Order #3> Ordered an Irish Red Malt Extract kit. Upon opening, I found that the kit included instructions for Copper Ale All-Grain kit.
Finally, I emailed the company giving my grievances and dissatisfaction with my past orders and to this day I have not heard a single word from them regarding the problems they seem to be plagued with.
Bottom line: There are better places to shop online for your beer or wine supplies try Northern Brewer as an alternative and around the same prices (once you factor in the inflated shipping costs Midwest tacks on) for example I paid less for an exact order from Northern Brewer because shipping there is fair. So my final review of Midwest Supplies is a resounding thumbs DOWN.
UPDATE: 5/24/13 - New Order (Yeah I know)
I decided to give Midwest one more try. You guessed it.. they screwed this order up too. My order was missing items I ordered. Having to contact them AGAIN to make it right. I am done with Midwest. Oh, and it took them 5 days to ship a simple order. No excuse for this sorry company.
4 Orders... 4 Mistakes = No Return Shopping from Me!

I have purchased brew kits a handful of times here, with no issues, but in December purchased my entire 4-tap kegerator set-up here (over $650), and am very disappointed with the quality. Two gas regulator gauges had their backs broken, and two of my four taps had leaks in them from day one, even after tightening. The last straw was one of the employees commenting, "wait, you had two separate broken gauges, and NOW your taps are having trouble?", as if I was somehow damaging my own equipment on purpose. Make sure to ask about their money back guarantee, because it is fuzzy at best, and make sure to ask questions up front before ordering your parts-you know, simple questions like, "Do you include instructions?" (they don't). I finally gave up and purchased some beautiful taps from http://ritebrew.com, for half the price of midwest. If something as straightforward (and easily detected) as a broken gauge face is shipped out, what is the quality/origin of their grains, malt, and yeast (which are much more difficult to rate at first glance)?

Ok so here it is, this place cant even get 1 order right out of 3 in a row, then when you explain what is missing they want to send it without expediting it unless you ask for them to do so, all the while your ingredient's are getting old while you wait.
On one of the items that they were suppose to send a second time, it never showed up again, so now its being shipped a third time, and my brewing ingredients are still sitting in the fridge waiting, this has been going on for 3 weeks now, and no offer what so ever to do anything about my brewing supplies getting old, (and yes I had them crack the grains), even after speaking to a manager (nothing done), they will not be getting any more of my money.
On the bright side they are nice on the phone when you are spending your money with them, Midworst Supplies says it all.
Their shipping is outrageous compared to most.
If you don't believe me, just place an order and wait & wait.

Customer service FAIL.
I Ordered online, four yeast packages, and four ice packs.
They arrived at my door seven days later- not just warm, but hot. The yeast packs were totally swollen.
I was told by a customer service representative that the yeast was fine, and to use it anyway. My experience tells me otherwise. Northern Brewer would've replaced it.
Too bad, too.
Because Midwest offers up a great inventory, and modest pricing. I've been happy with them up to this point, but their reluctance to resolve the matter will send me elsewhere.

I was first introduced to Midwest through a groupon that had a great deal on a homebrewing starter kit. I haven't looked back since.
They have nearly everything a homebrewer could want. The selection is phenomenal. All of the ingredients that I've gotten have always been very fresh and packaged to remain fresh if you don't use them right away. Their service is also great. I made a fairly big order one day, one of the items being a plastic hydrometer test jar. They gave me a better glass one instead of the plastic one just because of my business. Not a huge price difference, but I really appreciated the gesture. As far as prices, they're either better or the same as other suppliers that I've looked at. Shipping is especially cheap compared to other suppliers (but I guess that depends on where they're shipping to).
Overall, Midwest is great. I highly recommend them for all of your homebrewing needs.

The store seems like a Costco/Sam's club in it's layout, but once you figure out the layout, most things are easy to find. The quality of the goods are high, with all things I've purchased being very fresh. Service is generally solid and knowledgable, but since they do so many things other than homebrewing, not all their people are able to help you. They have most everything the homebrewer needs and at competitive prices. A good amount of hops and yeast strains. Definitely a good place to get supplies.
