Looks like cola in the glass. Little head, little retention. Bubbles cling to the sides of the glass. Smells weak, with some nut & caramel. Taste is cola-like, with some slight burnt character. Uninspired. Mouthfeel is light-medium, lighter than I was expecting. Carbonation is mild. Drinkability is low. I didn't want to finish the bottle and shared - which was met with a weak reaction. Won't be buying again.

Purchased at the Cambridge Wine Merchants shop, Cambridge City. 500ml brown bottle, bottle-conditioned. BBE MAR 2007, served cool in a straight imperial pint glass.

A: very dark mahogany hue, with ruby glows against light, coming with a thin, hissing beer head dissipating within a minute; carbonation is quite lively, as detected from the head and the walls of the glass--maybe the bottle-conditioning is not perfect?
S: coarse, chewy dark malts (with a very faint roasty hint), followed by sweet chocolatey and fudge edges, sweet licorice, and a little sour-sweet fruity edge at the back, as in preserved plums. But overall the aroma is one-dimensional and rather thin for a 5.3%abv. porter.
T: a burned flavour of dark/black malts comes with a strangely astringently sour flavour of unidentified berries and grapes, mixed not in a harmonious manner; as the sour fruitiness gradually fades out, a more pleasant roast-nutty and a little black-sugary aftertone develops, resulting in a surprisingly clean palate in the end, without much lingering flavour and preferrable bitter-sweetness, though.
M&D: if the flavour came more balanced, i.e. more malty entry to balance off the sharp fruity edge, it could've been a tasty porter, as the mouthfeel is refreshingly fizzy and light. Not ideal bottle-conditioning this beer has undergone, and the end result suffers from both the flavour profile and the serving condition. The beer might be better on cask, I presume.

The colour is much brighter than I had expected; it is very deep brown-red and a little bit cloudy. The thin beige foam sinks immediately down to a thin cap.

The medium strong smell is dry and roasted with a distinct note of black coffee. There are also notes of hazelnuts, dark chocolate, seaweed and a touch of smoke.

The taste is burned and a bit salt. There are flavours of mild coffee, sweet liquorice and some weak notes of boiled cod. There is an odd slight flavour of plastic present in the background that disturbs the palette quite a bit; it might come from the hops. The aftertaste is burned with notes of liquorice candy, tye crisp bread and French coffee with some cream.

The carbonation is quite strong, resembling more of a dark lager than a porter. In fact, it is a little bit too strong for me.

If it wasn’t for the odd plastic note, it would have been a fine English porter.

Quite dry and bitter, not particularly fruity (perhaps some berry type fruit in there), more charcoal and roast, with quite a dry, bitter burnt finish, my only real problem with it was that the mouthfeel was little thin. And a touch short, some acidity in the middle, would probably be better on cask.
