First, this place caters mainly to wine afficionados. I'd say that maybe 25% of the store's inventory is geared towards beer. Maybe that's why it's called "Total Wine". But, they do have a pretty good selection of beer at competetive prices, including British, German, Belgian and U.S. beers. However, being that Brawley's is right across the street, I can't find any good reason why I would ever come back here again. Mike Brawley has every beer that Total Wine has and his prices are about the same. Plus, he's very much into craft beer. Bottom line: if you're interested in a bottle of wine and talking with someone who knows wine, then Total Wine is great. If your goal is craft beer, skip this place.

This store reminds me a lot of the total wine store in Delaware. A bit like a supermarket, great selection. The singles aisle is loaded. I love that. Good selection of imports as well. I didn't encounter any staff until check out, but seemed friendly enough. Prices were good as well. I would recomnend checking this place out when in Charlotte.

This place is great - they have thousands of wines and beers... Literally thousands. It is a warehouse (very nice inside) of every type of beer, wine, cider, etc you can possibly think of. The staff is suprisingly very knowledgeable about the selections and if they don't know, they wont BS you and will help you find out. They also offer beer and wine tastings that I want to try out soon. If they are out, they will get more - I just wish they could order things from other distributors (b/c they dont have distribution rights for that area) but aparently it is against the law and if they can't get it, no one in the area can get it...

Good box store with a nice selection of brews. If you're in the store a lot, ask different folks questions about beer & they'll push you towards the people with knowledge on the subject. Once you know who to approach, you'll get better service.
Everything's laid out nicely, great selection of singles & bombers & priced affordably. Pretty good selection of cold brews as well as some local growlers & kegs too.
I like this store a lot, especially because of the location; Duckworth's is just across the parking lot with about 70 quality drafts and Brawley's (cool local mom & pop craft store) is just across the street. Combine the three and you've got a reason to drive into the area from a bit of distance.

Stopped in here a couple of weeks ago while in town... At first glance this particular store seemed pretty similar to every other Total Wine I've been to, but after taking my time going through all the beer sections, I was pretty impressed.
Variety of craft six-packs was about the same as their other Charlotte-area locations and much better than the Charleston, SC store. Also, a huge selection of singles and bombers - some arranged with matching glassware (!!?), and a good spread in the fridge, including pre-filled OMB growlers. Being that it was late August, they had plenty of Oktoberfests and Pumpkin Ales on display at the front of the store. The thing that really struck me about this location was the organization of everything... all sixers, singles and bombers were on the shelves with their respective descriptions / price tags. Very clean store, organized and well maintained.
Staff was helpful. Check dates on bottles when you can, just to make sure they're not out of date (my main gripe with TW).
Probably my new Total Wine of choice in NC / SC.

Not a bad place. Not as good as other Total Wine locations I have been to. Has the standard BMC bullshit that they have to have and a fair selection of craft and imports, nothing that you can't get anywhere else. Good quality, no employees to be found though. Atmosphere is your standard retail store, nothing more, nothing less. Value is fine, Total Wine is one of the better places as far as price. I think the place could use a lot more as far as selection goes, especially with Brawley's right down the street and on that level they can't compete.

All-around, pretty standard. They definitely have a ton of different beers, but nothing that's terribly hard to find. I would've liked to see a little better local offering.
Service was fine. Quickly asked a guy stocking shelves if they had any Bitches Brew left and he said that he was pretty sure they were sold out. All I really needed to know.
Overall, not bad. It's right across the street from Brawley's, and literally next to Duckworth's, so I'm not exactly sure what compelled me to go in...but I was pretty pleased.

I thought this was a pretty typical Total Wine. They have a great selection of standard offerings in both six packs and singles. It includes lots of local beers, favorites from throughout the US and European classics.
But they don't have much in the way of special releases or harder to find beers. I was hoping to find some Old Hickory or something else I couldn't get in Raleigh but no such luck.
This Total Wine is a great place as a regular but don't go out of your way to find anything particularly different.

I liked Total Wine Charlotte (University area) more than I thought I would. You enter the store and immediately a shelf of single beers greets you. There you'll find not only Belgians (Chimay, Delirium) but British and Scottish (Brewdog!), also Germans. I bought a bottle of Brewdog Paradox Macallan at $11.99. Had never seen it before... also lots of American craft singles and seasonals.
Walk further down to the beer aisle and you'll find the usual suspects (Stone, Flying Dog, Dogfish) plus local beer at reasonable-but-slightly-high prices (two dollars more per pack than Frugal MacDoogal's). I did find a nice pack of 2009 Old Stock (hard to find in other states).
The selection here is not huge but well-curated and should please the locals. I would go back!

Wow what a great beer shopping selection in the area when you combine to great stores in the same area. Brawleys and Total Wine... If one doesn't have what you want the other does. This Total Wine has a good selection and is well organized as all Total Wines are. Employees have fair knowledge and are always very helpful. This was a smaller store for TW then I'm used to because it doesn't have liquor but they did have a great beer selection and some beers I wanted that Brawley's didn't. Quality was solid. Most of the bottles that had dates on them were really fresh. Turnover of this store for inventory looks like it's good, so stuff isn;t sitting forever. Like I said I can impagine that most locals come from all over to shop in this area because it has to the two best destinations for buying in the area.
