Rohrbach Highland Lager...on tap at the Inn on the Lake Lounge in Canandaigua, NY
Appearance-a mild red glass out of the tap, medium sized head but it leaves quickly.
Smell-roasted malt with a sweet back end, mixes with light hops. Notably sweet.
Taste/Mouthfeel- Heavy malted taste, hint of nuts in the forefront, residual sweetness. Another layer of hops on the way down, very smooth, finishes bitter. Light mouthfeel.
Drinkability- Light but flavorful.
Overall- an enjoyable beer, a lot of flavor in a light mouthfeel. Would have it again.

You may be asking, "how can you be reviewing a bottle when Rohrbach is growler/draft only?" well, I got a bottled sample directly from the brewery.
A: amber in color and clear, Highland has a decent head and a touch of lacing.
S: bouquet is bold, with healthy doses of caramel, almonds, and a touch of butter.
T: malty sweet, with almonds and butter in the front and a touch of spicy hops to fight the sweetness. I'm not so sure how much I appreciate the diacetyl in this one. Other than the bitter, everything is tasty.
M: medium body with a touch of silkiness and little carbonation.
D: a hometown favorite of Rochester, this is one of Rohrbach's best sellers. I am a more fond of their scotch ale, but this is a fairly well made lager. That's not to say that cutting the diacetyl down a bit wouldn't help. Either way, this is worth a shot if you're in the Rochester area.

This beer has a very dark color, almost the same color as an almond. It looks tasty. Not many bubbles are visible and there's little head to speak of. The smell is very good, definitely can smell some toffee and caramel in this.
The taste has a nice and strong roasted flavor with a hint of hops. The mouthfeel seemed a bit light, especially on the carbonation.
Overall, a solid beer. I could see myself drinking the entire growler.

Rerate, on tap at WatchaGotCookin in Fairport, NY: Highland Lager is clear, sparkling and amber. The off-white head is soft, tenacious and leaves great lacing. The aroma is fresh and of light grain, caramel and a little roast. Very inviting. The mouth feel is medium-light, pretty watery and grainy or chalky. There is more flavor here than I expected. It is nutty, almost like pistachios. The caramel flavor from the aroma is present in the flavor as well. There is much more of a roasty flavor than I anticipated. There is not really any bitterness to speak of. All of the flavor seems to be from the malt. The aftertaste is nutty. This is a pretty good session lager. [+1 appearance, +2 overall]
(rated Sep 18, 2007)
Original rating from 1 Aug 2007: (Growler from Hegedorns) Highland Lager is a clear and sparkling deep amber lager with a slight off-white ring of a head. The aroma is of fruity wooden hops with dark sweet malt extract. It's almost smokey. It is medium-light bodied and a little flat. It's a little chalky but not too bad. It's lightly bittered, a little resiny, a little metallic. It ends with a sweet snap and leaves the flavor of molasses in its wake. It's OK for a lager. The flavor is not very focused or prominent. It looks darker than it is.

Had a good amber flavor and color. It was definely nothing to right home about, but the fact i was able to get it in a growler for 7 dollars, made it well worth it.
In the end the price was great for a pretty good ambler, could have paid more for a less tasting amber lager.
It was a great party hit as well was able to buy two growlers for the night and just hung out and watched football games
It was pretty smooth drinking so you can't go wrong with this choice. So i say if you see this amber lager in a growler pick it up and enjoy

The beer pours a nice amber color with a 1/2" offwhite head that fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a dry, pale and crystal malt scent with a light hop aroma. The taste is good. It's quite flavorful with a complex malt taste. It boasts of pale and crystal malts along with a light hoppy finish. It has a wonderful roasted character that adds a toastey dryness in the finish. The mouthfeel is great. It is a medium bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a very enjoyable amber lager. It has a tremendous malt bill for the style. Recommended!

Appearance- It has a deep red color mildly orange hue depending on the light. I was drinking outside. It had a very nice thick white head and lace.
Smell- You can smell the sweetness of this beer. It has a full toffee and caramel aroma.
Taste- I thought it had a great roasted flavor and was somewhat beany.
Mouthfeel- Full bodied but has very smooth feeling.
Drinkability- Nice easy drinker.

Picked up a 1/4 Keg and Beers of the World for about $65 for a little end of the college school year celebration...
Appearance is a deep blazing orange topped off with a frothy, light, slightly tan tinged head.
Smell is all amber malt all the time. Sort of gives you a heads up for what you're in for in the rest of the beer.
With that being said, it tastes like amber malt. Sorta seems logical for an amber lager. Pretty thin in flavor up front with a dry/stale/grainy touch on the tongue that really doesn't scream "amber" or "lager" but more like "water." Further into the taste you get hit with the same flavor as the aroma- nicely toasted amber malt well balanced with a little hop bite- I definitely enjoyed this combination. Finishes fairly clean- I can detect maybe a little diacetyl if any but I don't think it's very important considering the darker grains used. My only real criticism is that for the first 40% of the gulp you feel like you're drinking seltzer water.
Mouthfeel is very light, with a little bit of body towards the center of the mouth. Makes for a very drinkable beer considering the dominant "aftertaste" and generally light feel to the beer. I probably sat down and had 25 of these over the course of about 36 hours. Needless to say, I think I'll try something else now out of pure, amber exhaustion but I think it was a good purchase and something that will please a variety of guests at BBQ's or other springtime social events.

got this at a local Chilli's across the street from my house ; pours a clear amber-brown color w/ a fat white head leaving a decent amount of lacing even in the big 'ol frozen mug they gave me ; not a strong smell, a dark crystal malt and darker fruit was all i detected ; as it warmed i taste a definite full on munich and deep british-type crystal malt w/ some floral hops, a faint nut & raison undertone ; a crisp, light body, well carbonated but then again their full moon stuff was foaming out of control, creamy but light ; a very good beer, my first rohrbach's on tap, i def. look forward to more of their beers...
edit : i believe this brews ABV is 5.8%

On tap at the Growler station at Consumer Bev. in Orchard Park, poured into a .5 liter stein a deep bronze with thinner off white head there was good clarity to the pour.Lightly roasted malt with some caramel and chocolate tones in the nose with not much noticable hop presence to be had,a little watery mouthfeel it takes away from the caramel and chocolate flavors also a bit of a grainy feel.Lightly hopped caramel accented lager not bad but its basic and on the thinner side.

Poured into pint glass.
A: Pours....well, amber. It's a light amber with a full finger of slightly off-white head (no stadium pour!) that has good retention. Sticky trails left behind as I drink it.
S: Wheaty and grainy, with a touch of something sour, like apple cider. Very mild.
T/M: Exclusively malty. Very light caramel malt, a touch of candied apple. No real bitterness to speak of at the end. Finish has a hint of grain. Mouthfeel is light-bodied.
D: For what it is, yeah, I'd have another, but it's not a beer that draws me in. If it's on tap around here, I usually get one, but it's not the kind of beer I ever crave. Pleasant, simple, local.

Served in a pint glass at Mario's Via Abruzzi.
A- Clear amber color. A little bit of sediment at the bottom. Not much for head.
S- Malty, balanced with hops and a little sweetness.
T- A well balanced red. Nothing great, but definitely very smooth and tasty.
M- Smooth. Flows well, makes you want to keep sipping.
D- I don't think it's very strong so, yeah, drink it up.

I sampled a pint of this at the Rochester, NY Crowne Plazas State Street Pub. This beer appeared to be very popular with the crowd.
The beer was served in a standard pint glass, the beer is a reddish brown with no real head. Wisps of lacing.
The beer has a mild nose of fruit, caramel and very lightly toasted bread.
The taste is very similar to the smell. It is sweet, not overly complex, lightly hopped. No ready flaws and no off flavors.
Medium mouth easy drinker but a bit one-dimensional. Blows the pants off bmc.
