Collaboration with Local Option Bierwerker
De Kleine Dood is a Belgian-inspired Weissenbock brewed as a collaboration between The Local Option and Central Waters Brewery in Amherst, Wisconsin. Originally released in summer 2012, De Kleine Dood will be available in spring 2013 on draft and in large format bottles.
When Central Waters decided to open its brew house for its first collaboration beer, Chicago’s Local Option was the obvious partner in crime. The resulting brainchild, De Kleine Dood - a Belgian inspired Weissenbock – maintains the traditional characteristics of its Bavarian forbearer, with the added complexity of Belgian ale yeast. De Kleine Dood is dark amber in color; maintains a rich, full-bodied mouth-feel augmented by caramel; mild and dark fruit; and vanilla and bourbon aromas as a result of six months of aging on Heaven Hill Barrels.. Rounded out by an unostentatious bourbon-driven aroma from brief bourbon barrel aging, De Kleine Dood is a complex ale, a marriage of distinctive styles, and an orgasmic experience for the taste buds that revel in its glory.

It's nice to see some american breweries making these kinds of beers, especially this style. Great beer overall!

22oz bottle, no bottling date, but I have had this around for quite a while, likely from 2017.
Deep brown colored body, with garnet red back lit highlights. Short lived light brown, fizzy head. There is a bubble fed ring, constantly reinforced. No lacing.
Aroma of dark fruit, roasted malts, and bourbon barrel. Some caramel.
Taste is full of dark fruit (raisin and prune), caramel malt, and bourbon barrel.
Fuller mouth feel, has a thicker and syrupy texture. Carbonation is low but appropriate.
Generally sweet from the dried, dark fruit but also has a rich earthy flavor (towards a tartness but not quite). Close to eating bourbon soaked red grapes, but dried and brewed with malts.

Pours a very dark brown that is nearly black. Head is a finger in height and khaki in color and retains... okay. Aroma is roasted, toasted, smoked, and breaded malts. There is a dry lingering smoke note that melds with char and bourbon to form an complex and twisted aromatic quality. Flavor profile is roasted, toasted, nutted, caramel, and breaded malts layered densely over char and bourbon, chocolate, caramel and a wisp of smoke. Malts and sugary notes keep it drinking sweet, and would be overly sweet without the charred bourbon to bring it back. Together, it maintains a good balance. Mouth feel is medium-thick, edging up to thick. It has a hearty, filling, velvety texture that gives this beer a big persona. Overall, a flavorful beer with depth. Despite all the additions and notes, it retains a notable balance.
Served in a 12oz snifter from a 22oz bottle.

I have never had this style. Thanks BA for the style guide. I am a fan of Central Waters. This poured dark with a short lived tan head. I smell some chocolate sweet? Maybe it's the bourbon. Mouthfeel- seems to leave a "film" in my mouth. Since I never had this style before, not sure what to think. Got it in a bomber at a good price. Would I buy again? Probably not. Cheers!
