Notes:
Bourbon Barrel Aged La Petite Mort is a Belgian inspired Weissenbock brewed as a collaboration between The Local Option and Central Waters Brewery in Amherst, Wisconsin. Originally released in summer 2012, BBA La Petite Mort will be available in spring 2013 on draft and in large format bottles.
When Central Waters decided to open its brew house for its first collaboration beer, Chicago’s Local Option was the obvious partner in crime. The resulting brainchild, Bourbon Barrel Aged La Petite Mort - a Belgian inspired Weissenbock – maintains the traditional characteristics of its Bavarian forbearer, with the added complexity of Belgian ale yeast. BBA La Petite Mort is dark amber in color; maintains a rich, full-bodied mouth-feel augmented by caramel; mild and dark fruit; and vanilla and bourbon aromas as a result of six months of aging on Heaven Hill Barrels.. Rounded out by an unostentatious bourbon driven aroma from brief bourbon barrel aging, BBA La Petite Mort is a complex ale, a marriage of distinctive styles, and an orgasmic experience for the taste buds that revel in its glory.

A - Dark brown- like a cola, pinky thickness-light cream head, light carbonation rising, high amount of lacing
S - Booze. Hints of aged fruit, Oak, Vanilla
T - Malty, candied fruit, real sweet, Booze, carmel, chocolate, Oak and Vanilla. Finished was candied fruit booze
M - medium body, high carbonation, booze
O - Disappointment. I am a huge fan of CW and this is by far the worst beer I have had from them. I surly hope there was some handling problem between bottling and my drinking to explain this product. This a booze filled- non flavorful, super sweet maltiness. Even the bourbon tasted poor. I hate saying all this negativity - this was a shock.

Poured 22oz bottle into teku glass.
A - Pours a thin dark coffee colored liquid with just a thin layer of foam. Only a trace remains around the glass and there is no lacing to speak of.
S - Typical CW BA bourbon smell with plenty of oak and vanilla. Toffee, caramel with slight hints of cocoa and malts. You would never know this was a Weizenbock
T - Straight up bourbon, oak and vanilla as is present in all CW BA beers. Caramel and malts dominate after the bourbon. Maybe some stale wheat and a slight hint of tartness in the finish. Again, you would have no idea it is a Weizenbock.
M - Very thin bodied and minimum carbonation. I don't get much alcohol.
O - This beer is not easy to find and I stumbled across it at a local shop. A bit pricey for what it is, but I wanted to try it. Nothing really stands out as the Weizenbock took on all the characteristics of the bourbon barrel. I don't know how long this was in the barrel, but it may be better as a 70/30 blend so some of the Weizenbock notes are present. I guess that is why it is called La Petite Mort (small death).

22oz bomber of 2013 vintage shared with a friend yesterday 6/1/2013; poured into a FFF teku glass.
Aroma: Straight up bourbon barrel- whiskey, a little vanilla, a lot of oak. It's very strong and carries hints of malt toffee sweetness. A little bit of ripe fruit as well. (4)
Colour: Not a pretty cooking hazy cola coloured beer. Small 1cm offwhite head that dissipates very quickly into a rather thin collar. Not much lacing to speak of. (3)
Flavour: Faint toffee and butterscotch sweetness in the background, mostly straight up whiskey and wood, faint hints of vanilla. Not a particularly complex beer but it was interesting. As it warmed up there was a bit of ripe fruit that I'd definitely say was some kind of dark fruit. Not tart or sour but just ripe. (4)
Mouthfeel: Medium bodied, good carbonation with an aftertaste of wood and ripe dark fruit. That aftertaste sticks around, and the booziness shows up quite a bit as the beer warms. (3.75)
Overall: Pretty decent bourbon barrel beer that isn't particularly complex and it would be for the people who love drinking their whiskey. Because it seems like its basically a glass of sweetened whiskey. I would appreciate a bit more complexity here, even a bit more bitterness as well. (4)

1pt 6oz bottle poured into a Weizen glass.
A - Dark brown with extreme cloudiness+++. Medium tan head falls to a small cap. No lacing.
S - Smooth vanilla boozy notes. Mild banana esters. Smokey phenols. Plenty of barrel qualities. Red fruit shows up as it warms.
T - Layers of rich smooth chocolate and caramel malts. Wheat quality midway falls to the boozy mellow cigar/vanilla flavors. Leaves pretty dry with a pleasurable alcohol warmth.
M - Super creamy, medium-full bodied, semi-sweet, medium carbonation.
O - All signs point to a great Weizenbock previous to the barrel, the bourbon barrel adds tremendous depth. Great look to this, aroma only teases more. Flavor features so many great dimensions, all working great. The perfect body is a bonus.

A: the wheat adds a good cloudy characteristic that pours deep brown with a nice tan head that has good retention.
S: lots of sweet Carmel malts. Oak is faint but present, not a whole lot of bourbon but it adds a nice bite to balance out the profound sweet malts.
T: oak is present upfront but fades into the sweet rich Carmel malts. There's a creamy note to it that reminds me of a malt ball. Ends in a slight bitterness that adds a nice crisp finish.
M: flavor is rich but feel is light. Has a sticky feel even though though its not thick.
O: reminds of a taffy apple. Sweet camel malts with a crisp fruity feel.
