Bottle poured into pint.

Two finger dark tan head, jet black beer with red hue at the bottom of the glass.

Smells of vanilla, bourbon, oak, woods, and roasted malt.

Taste: coffee, vanilla, oak, roasted malt with a hop bite at the end

Mouthfeel: thick, creamy, and smooth

Overall, this is a fine beer! I enjoyed this, but overall I found it to be a fine example of the style. This is an excellent winter beer. Please try.

Pours dark brown in color with mahogany highlights and a modest khaki head that soon settles into a swath of patchy frogspawn. Grains of sediment are readily apparent as they bob among the rising bubbles of carbonation, which I don't think I've ever seen in a porter before. There's a load of dark chocolate in the nose along with a hint of caramel and little else, which is fine by me.

As for the taste, roasted chocolate malt sneaks in at first blush before a deluge of resinous, citric hops override it. The bottle mentions the relatively high hopping, but there was barely a rumor of it in the nose, so it's a little surprising nonetheless. Not sure that I've tasted so much pine in a porter before, with the possible exception of Stone. The high level of hopping almost works, but I'm afraid it asserts itself a little too mightily, as the malt flavors never get a chance to shine. The mouthfeel is smooth and moderate--on par for a porter. Noticeable stickiness lingers on the lips after sipping.

If they dialed down the hops a few notches, I could see this being a quite a tasty porter. As is, I'm afraid the balance is too skewed toward the bitter end, which might work with a lighter style, but not with a porter (at least not for me).
