Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a snifter glass. (6 pack)

A: Pours a jet black with a one finger beige head.
S: Bitter roasted coffee and dark chocolate.
T: Initial blast of roasted coffee, though bitterness is minimal; this is followed up by rich dark chocolate, vanilla, and finally a bit of hops.
M: Full bodied, great carbonation, velvety smooth finish.
O: I'm not sure why this isn't getting a higher score, but I think is the most drinkable imperial stout I've had since FBS back in the fall, and the chocolate/vanilla flavors make this seem like a less viscous, lower ABV Big John. Not perfect, but very good and drinkable for the style.

April 2012. 12 oz bottle into a teku glass. Pours a near black body, some light gets through the edges showing a dark brown body. One finger of khaki foam. Decent lacing. Loads of chocolate and some subtle vanilla on the nose. Light char and some alcohol. Pretty basic but it does smell quite hefty. Taste is of rich chocolate, chalky cocoa powder and some bitter roasted malts. Mouth feel is a bit thin but creamy enough. A pretty average but tasty stout that has held up quite well with some age on it.

Pours seal brown with a moderate mocha head. Broad sheets of lacing cling to the glass as the beer recedes. Roasted malt aroma favors dark chocolate with a touch of coffee. The flavor is a suitable match to the aroma, with dark chocolate, burnt toast, and some coffee. The bitterness of the roasted malt is augmented by a modest dose of resinous hops--just enough to add some contrast. A touch of alcoholic warmth is discernible as well, even though 7.5% ABV isn't terribly significant for the style. The mouthfeel is creamy and of appropriate thickness for a stout, though not exceptional.

The complexity of the roasted malt is quite enjoyable, with a dark chocolate backbone that I always savor in a stout. With heavier body and a little more sweetness, this stout could be close to ideal. As is, it remains a very good stout with great drinkability for the style.

August 2012 bottle, tasted April 2013

A: Very dark brown, almost black, with a two fingered tan head that quickly recedes.

S: Roasted malts, chocolate with hints of vanilla. There's also some hints of alcohol.

T: Initially it's strong with chocolate and caramel, but that ends pretty quickly and you get very strong roasted malt flavors with just a hint of the prior sweetness remaining.

M: Nice carbonation, it feels very light for being a stout.

O: Overall I like it quite a bit. If the finish wasn't quite so roasty, I'd like it even more, but it's a very good beer that I'll certainly look for when the winter comes around.
