Smells like molasses and chocolate, taste is sweet, dried fruits, but appearance and mouthfeel are lacking. No head and very little carbonation, and the mouthfeel is watery for a doppelbock. Sweetness hides the high alcohol content.

Quite a foul beer. I'm not sure if this is how it's supposed to be, or if it's just old. I feel like it's infected and/or old. The beer pours a murky brown color with a lot of particles floating around. Zero head, seemingly zero carbonation, and absolutely no lacing. High alcohol percentage is the likely culprit for that.

This beer smells ... odd. Overly rippened fruits, super sweet malts, grapes... things of that nature. There are also notes of sourness in there as well.

The taste is what really throws me off. Insane sweetness on the front, a bit of bitterness on the finish. The taste is that of malts and undefined fruits. The aftertaste is extreme warmth and alcohol -- almost drinks like liquor rather than a beer.

I'm not sure what to make of this beer. I can't tell if it's infected, or if this is just how the beer's supposed to taste/look.

330ml swing-top bottle. Just called 'Schorschbock 13%' on the label, and further deemed a Dunkler Bock, so this must be close enough.

This beer pours a muddled, very dark chestnut brown colour, with one finger of fizzy and loosely foamy off-white head, which dissipates quite quickly, leaving a few low-rising streaks of lace around the glass.

It smells of sugary and slightly soused black orchard fruit, some mild overripe banana notes, middling caramel/toffee malt, and earthy and musty hops. The taste is big fruity caramel malt, like a caramel apple bobbing against the tide of a river of soft and sugary booze. A subtle tartness seeps in as well, before that mustiness that may or may not be hoppy in orientation attempts and fails to round things out.

The bubbles are very placid, and practically inert, the body a certifiable heavyweight, with a fruity sourness piquing the overall smoothness. It finishes rather sweet, the caramel malt, pithy dark fruit, and sugary booze all complicit in the act.

For its strength, this isn't all that difficult to drink - a slight high-palate warmth just happens to be your constant companion. However, it's too fruity, and a tad too sweet for it to entice me back into this particular high-octane game again. That's for something or someone else to do.

330ml swinging pop top poured into tulip 21/7/12

A dark brown with amber edges, I can see some bubbles slowly raising too the surface and feeding a fairly well sustained light brown head that leaves lots of polka dot lace

S not far off the Weizen version with bruised banana, and lots banana bread with chocolate chips, brown sugar and booze, there's some overripe plum and a little vanilla

T the fruits turned a little past its prime, slightly sour, and its missing something the nose had going for it, booze is also much stronger

M thick and rich, quite sticky, aftertaste is better then flavor, just a fair bit of heat too complain about

O Ok beer but the taste hold it back, I had no problems finishing the bottle but a second is out of the questions

smells good and feels good but there's areas lacking, a little strong too drink all that much of. Overpriced at 10$, one and done

Flip top bottle sent to me from Europe as an extra in a trade. Light peachy colour, quick disapearing white head. Boozy and malty aroma. Medium mouthfeel suppoting a bozy peachy sweet sugary taste, with some acid aftertaste. Just too boozy to enjoy so not so drinkable.

A: Hazy orange with a small head.

S: The smell is malty with notes of fruit yeast, detergent and alcoholic fumes. One-sided and boring with some aromas that just seems off. Not impressive.

T: The taste is just awful, and I mean really really awful. Malty sweetness and caramel at first. Then a vile flavor of tart peaches apricots takes over for a second before handing over to a horrible finish of burning cloyingly sweet alcohol and chemicals. After each sip, a chill of disgust runs down the spine.

M: Medium body gentle carbonation - but really, who cares about mouthfeel when you're trying not to gag.

D: No, no, no. This is just bad. It manages to be one-dimensional while at the same time very unbalanced - there was not one component of the taste that I enjoyed. Stay a way from this one.

My brother-in-law brought this back for me in a set of 3 from a trip to Frankfurt. I'll be reviewing the other two later on. For now, 1 of 3:

The beer poured a hazy amber color, like tree sap. The head was almost non-existant. A fruity alcohol scent wafted up from my glass with a strong yeast presence almost completely muscling out the malt. This Bock tasted strongly of fruit, apples and pears, with a slightly sour twang. The wheat malt used came through, surprisingly, with a nice alcohol warmth. Overall I found this beer to be fairly light in body and easily drinkable, though (at 13% ABV) not sessionable!

After trying the Donner Weizen, I had to try out its brother, Donner Bock. Unfortunately, I wasn't really impressed. There wasn't much of a taste difference. Let's look at this Bock in a little bit more detail.

Obviously with all of the alcohol in this brew, there was very little head and had a syrupy consistency. The body was hazy and had an amber orange color to it.

There was very little aromas detected, mostly esters from the yeast, which provided a powdery type of aroma.

The taste was rich in alcoholic characteristics, but there was somewhat a apple like taste.

This feels a bit powdery and dry, with a moderate drinkability.

Picked this beer up while in Trier, Germany. Comes in a nice earthenware bottle with a lightingstopper. Picked up Donner Weizen at the same time, I just hope this brew is a little more inpresive.

Pours honey color with almost no head and very little carbonation.

Aroma of contains scents of sweet malts, caramel, and candied fruits.

Flavor contains much of the same as the aroma, sweet malts, caramel, and candied fruits (apricots) with a noticeable alcohol note.

Not a bad brew slightly better that Donner Weizen but now that I've had it I will probably pick up something different next time.

Hazy, pale golden color. Low carbonation with what has to be the smallest bubbles rising slowly up the glass. Very sweet and malty aroma. Huge explosion of caramel and buttery sweetness. Slightly musty and earthy. Big malt flavor upfront. Somewhat smokey. No real hop bitterness but an alcohol hashness in the finish. Slightly dry. Overall a very drinkable beer. While theres no real outstanding characteristic the whole package is quite enjoyable. If you can lay your hands on a bottle I say its well worth trying.

Another gift from Johnfurbock in an Oktoberfest trade.... Vielen Dank!
Poured from a crockery-style 0.5l stoppered bottle, it produced a rich chestnut colored Bier; a bit cloudy overall, with a verrrry short, tan head which receded at a rapid rate to leave just a thin ring around the rim of fine bubbles. Lacing was nonexistant. I've rarely seen a good head and/or lacing on a Bier with 13% abv or above.... any out there? It has a distinct, sweet caramelly nose, reminding me of an Eisbock type of Bier such as EKU 28 or Samichlaus. Body was a bit more than medium, almost bordering on chewy; feel on the tongue was smooth with exceedingly low levels of carbonation. Flavor gives a lot of sweetness, with caramel and toffee leading the way, and even a hint of chocolate when the Bier warms a smidge. It's very rich, and warming as well, with the 13% abv making itself known quite readily. Found it to be better and better as its temp rose. A nice Bier; a sipper, that's for sure. Thnx again to Johnfurbock! Nice choice, mein Freund!

Prosit!!
