Notes:
Fourteen Anniversary Ale is a hoppy black ale bursting with so much flavor you might think you’re tasting double. Made with ingredients gathered from seven parts of the world, Fourteen will seize hold your taste buds and never let go. Enjoy the intensely floral nose from dry-hopped Cascade and Galaxy hops, the surprisingly light body from 2-row barley, wheat malt, black wheat, and Caramalt, and the strong bitter finish from Chinook, and Cascade hops. Fourteen is like a fast-moving squall, dark and complex with a beautiful black rainbow finish.

A-dark black color with a small tan head and some lacing

S-dark roasted malt, pine, hints of citrus, a slight earthiness

T-dark roasted malt, citrus, pine, slightly peppery, nice bitter finish

F-medium body with moderate carbonation, crisp

O-this black ale had nice flavor, but I prefer others in the category that have better balance

Provides a clear, nearly black, walnut glow when put to the light. 2” of creamy, beige foam, turns to pancake batter as it gradually surrenders, leaving a dense coating of lace behind the elephant of an Odell pint glass.

Fresh spruce and juniper provide a “wow” moment of juicy aroma. Crisp and clean overall with a light background of wheat bread.

Fourteen is a highly flavorful black ale tuned more to the IPA spectrum. Strong bitterness is balanced with hop flavors of grapefruit and pine sap. The finish has strong bitterness, though not harsh. Overall, this is crisp and clean with a spicy pepper, perhaps celery, nuance. Warmth brings out light coffee and licorice flavors.
A medium body and woolly texture is accented by modest carbonation, while alcohol is as expected. A touch of metallic notes and astringency are oddly welcomed.

This bottle was enjoyed during the calm following a tumultuous, stormy winter day, with pulled pork and corn bread.

750ml Bottle from Party Source Syracuse NY for 10$

Appearance - Black/Brown colour with an average size fizzy/frothy dark beige coloured head. It's too dark to make out the amount of carbonation showing and there is some good lacing. The head lasted for around 5 minutes.

Smell - Hops, malts, chocolate, coffee

Taste & Mouth - There is a below average amount of carbonation and I can taste caramel, malts, and hops. There are also some roasted/smokey notes and chocolate/coffee and some very very faint grapefruit. It ends with a fairly bitter malty/hoppy aftertaste.

Overall – Perhaps I am a little late to the party on this one. It had a bit of a hop bite, but basically tasted like a stout/porter. I think I picked up my bottle in November 2012, so I guess some of the hoppy/fruity flavours are all gone now. Still a good beer.

750mL bomber poured into a wine glass

Pours an ink black with a thin, one finger light tan colored cap. Some sheets of lace coat the inside of the glass. The cap falls to form a thin layer of foam of the liquid, forming some cool designs.

Extremely mild roast, clean cracked wheat, with grapefruit and soft tropical fruit. A burst of fresh flowers and a bit of an herbal/grassy dankness. A very clean malt bill.

Grapefruit and tropical fruit up front before pale malt and wheat take hold. Grassy notes mix with some mild milk chocolate. Grapefruit and grassy bitterness then sweeps the palate. I am really impressed with this malt bill. One of the better ones I have come across in a Black IPA.

Medium body with a smooth, creamy feel. A moderate bitterness lingers.

Solid Black IPA on all fronts. Moderate hoppyness with a touch of roast and milk chocolate, but never detracting from the hops. Nice work.

Poured from a 750 ml bottle into a Half Acre tulip.

A- pours black with a 3" tan head. Big trails and blotches of lacing remain.

S- caramel, very sweet citrus (orange, pineapple), slight spice aroma

T- toffee, sweet orange and pineapple, with some citrus rind and pine bitterness.

M- medium body and carbonation. Smooth and creamy with a crisp bite at the finish.

O- good beer. I am sure the bitterness has mellowed some with a year or so on it. Very smooth and easy drinking.

750ml bottle. Pours a pitch black color with over an inch of frothy head. Tons of lacing. The aroma is sweet citrus hops, hints of tropical fruits, chocolate, roasted malts and some floral notes. Flavors of sweet citrus hops, roasted malts and chocolate. Piney and floral as well. Nice bitterness throughout. Chocolate and piney hops at the finish. Thick, creamy mouth feel. Mild alcohol presence. Overall, a well made Black IPA that balances the hops and chocolate characteristics nicely.
