Received this brew from BeerTruth as part of Ithaca's seasonal sampler. Gotta love all the cool shit Ithaca pumps out. Drank from my Surly nonic pint glass.
Appearance- Pours a dark brownish crimson with a nice one finger super creamy light tan head. An incredibly nice cap and collar remains and somehow, someway, no lacing is left.
Smell- A definite Belgium yeast kick right from the start with a bit of bubblegummy spiciness. Some light banana esters with even lighter bits of clove and ginger. Some dark malts with a somewhat toasted side and a small musty earthiness.
Taste- Starts much the same as the nose but there is a distinct bitterness hiding in there. Slightly Belgium like with a dark earthy yeastiness that is earthy and spicy. Not so much of the banana in there but there is some clove and nutty maltiness. The beer is malty and somewhat clean but there is definitely a sneaky bitterness. It's citric and lightly fruity with a sharp bit of lemon peel and pear. I don't know what it is, but something in this beer reminds me of celery. Yes, celery. It's not bad at all, it just reminds me of celery when it all comes together. Weird.
Mouthfeel- Somewhere just a hair below heavy feeling with a lightly sharp bite of carbonation.
Drinkability- Definitely not really what I expected. The beer definitely blurs 'style' guidelines but it's interesting none the less. Probably a little bit too much Belgium influence for my tastes but I still didn't have any problems putting it down. Thanks for the opportunity Adam!
