Located on Heath Common, just 2 miles outside of the center of the City of Wakefield, which is very hard to believe given the luscious green country setting. Set well back from the nearby A655 Normanton Road, it is easy to drive here, but more responsible to catch one of the many Buses that goes nearby here. Strictly speaking it is in the village of Heath, an old stone village that has retained nearly all of its original character thanks to protection and some quirky local bye-laws.
A large old Stone building, comprised of many small rooms & corridors, once inside those with stature will often have to bow down to avoid the low-ceilinged beams. Small windows and dark wood paneling all go make the interior dark at times, indeed, after a few hours in here, once you exit into the outside sunshine, it can take a while for the eyes to readjust.
There is a small bar at the front to your right when you enter, which accommodates about 4-5 people. To the right and back, other slightly larger rooms are filled with old settles and knotty wooden tables. Round the back of the bar & further to the right is another larger room with a longer bar that contains most of the Handpumps, around eight of them, which have about 6 beers on usually. A range of beers from the Pubs owners, Clarks Brewery of Wakefield, as well as Timothy Taylors Landlord & often a Guest Beer. Fake UK Lagers & Nitro-piss Stouts make up the rest of the Taps. Good selection of Scotia Malt Whisky on the top shelf.
Recently it was expanded, which was the result of many, lengthy planning applications. There is now an enclosed Conservatory area to the back of the Pub, allowing a much more lighted environment for enjoying a meal, as well as much needed space.
Food is very good here, and represents excellent value for money. The Pub fare is typical in range, but the Beef in Ale Pie, Roast Beef & Yorkshire Pudding, Fish n Chips and Cumberland Sausage are all good company to the Beer.
During Summer weekend days, due to the vast unspoilt views over Heath Common, the plentiful & safe area for Children to fly kites, etc. as well as the Horses that are free to graze here, it is a magnate for Families.
I have whiled away many a sunny weekend afternoon outside here, drinking the excellent Timothy Taylors Landlord with friends, just lying on the quiet grassy open Common. A fantastic retreat from the nearby City Center and the rest of the noisy World.
