During a recent trip to Lawrence I made a point to get to Free State Brewing Co. The atmosphere was great, as with any establishment in Lawrence, you are bound to have a wide variety of people in the crowd. On this Saturday night there were quite a few people watching the World Series at the bar, but there were a couple of tables open. The combination of baseball fans and low volume music made conversation a little difficult at times, but I am pretty sure this was circumstantial due to the excitement of the game.
The wait staff was informative regarding where to find hotels, but not terribly knowledgeable about the beer they were serving. Beer selection was great, with 7 varieties to choose from. Two of the three beers that I sampled were great and the thirdwas pretty good too.
I will definitely stop by this brewery again in the future.

For some reason, I had never made it up to Free State, even though I only live a couple of hours away. Well, I finally wondered through the door a few days ago and wish I hadn't waited so long to do so.
Free State is a cool little brewpub located right on Massachusetts Street, where there are tons of other things to do if you don't just want to go to drink beer. It was a Saturday night and fairly crowded when we were there, but it was still easy to find a place to sit. (Granted, it was almost 11:00 p.m.) The music was at a nice, low level, so the conversation wasn't reduced to screaming things at the other person at the table. Overall, it had a somewhat modern, but still warm and comfortable feel to it.
The beer that I sampled was excellent, living up the the great reputation that Free State has around here. I really can't say enough good things about the brews that I sampled. Plus, they had a good seven or eight of their beers on tap, which is a pretty good selection in my opinion.
My only gripe about the place would be the service. Our wait person was nice, but rarely present. Plus she didn't seem to know much about the beer she was serving.
If you ever make it to the Lawrence area, Free State should be on the top of your list for places to visit.
I've been back to Free State a couple more times and the service was much, much better. I was very glad to see that.

If you don't mind waiting in line to get in (a good sign) this is a great place to eat, drink and be merry any time you're in Larrytown. Good selection of beer, good pub food. It's always been crowded when I visited, so my opinion of the service isn't as high as it might be if the girls had actually paid some attention to us...but them's the breaks.

Free State is a large restaurant-style brewpub with a family-friendly atmosphere. Well kept inside, there are smoking and nonsmoking sections. The small, clean bar is centrally located. There are two stories of seating. The service is always quality, prompt and helpful. The food is very tasty! There is a surprising "quality" and "style" to the entrees. The prices are not too bad either.
The beers are very much worth a quaff. They carry a nice range of styles at any given time and they do rotate seasonal beer on a regular basis. I've you want something particular check out their website, they keep tabs as to what is on-tap. Let the beer reviews speak for themselves.
I would come during off-peak hours because this place gets BUSY! During lunch and dinner you can expect to wait. Free State is located downtown near a nice array of shops. There is plenty of on-street, metered parking. I always look forward to my next visit. Recommended.

This brewery has a large resturant, the atmoshere is mostly family. The food is always good, pub fare and some other specialties. The beer selection is decent with some seasonals, with most being good quality, you should have no problem finding something you like.

It was a very busy day when I visited this large brewpub in downtown Lawrence. University home-games draw quite a crowd. The two-floor restaurant pub is geared toward more of a family atmosphere, but even thought they were very busy the service was still quick and knowledgable. The food was also very tasty. The brewery usually has six or so on tap. Worth a visit if you are in town.

The beer at Free State is consistently good, with some of their seasonals being superlative. It's got a bit more of a restaurant - type atmosphere than a local brewpub, but if the brew is good, one can't complain. It can get a bit crowded at times. The food is easily well - above average for a brewpub, being well beyond greasy brewpub fare (though they have that too) Some dishes are delicious. The service is prompt, courteous and gets the job done. I highly recommend this place.

This haven resides in Lawrence, Kansas, the Berkeley of the midwest. On summer nights it has that hippie atmosphere of love and imbibery mixed with the general college crowd and a variety of locals, from the organic farmers to the businessmen. It's a large yet cozy restaurant & microbrewery, with some good staple dishes that range from above average to excellent. The beers are legendary in the area - the Oatmeal Stout, Copperhead Pale Ale, John Brown Ale and Ad Astra Ale (some named after historic Kansas stuff) are staples in the diets of Lawrencians. The brewmaster trained extensively in Europe, and the entire line of beers (usually 7-10) is good. Free State doesn't make a bad beer, and some are truly unbelievable (The Invigorator Doppelbock is the world's best, as far as I'm concerned).
