Notes:
Too extreme to be called beer? 120 Minute IPA is brewed to a colossal 45-degree plato, boiled for a full two hours while being continuously hopped with high-alpha American hops, then dry-hopped daily in the fermenter for a month and aged for another month on whole-leaf hops!

Served in Chimay chalice
Appearance-
A deep orange color, with a thin white fizzy head.
Smell-
Very hoppy, citrus and bitter hops competing in the front with a sweet smell if you search for it.
Taste-
Way to sweet for its own good, almost like a Spaten Optimutor. The sweetness is way to much, and is followed by a slight bitter. I have a hard time picking out any flavors.
Mouthfeel-
Heavy and oily, less carbonation than expecting.
Overall-
I love me some hops, but if I wanted something this sweet I could drink soda. Still better than a AAL.

A: pours a nice brown color with an orange hue to it and when held up to the light it becomes an awesome dark orange color and you can see some floaties. pours about 1 fingers worth of head formation that is beige in color
S: huge hops rush to the nostrils during the pour. immense grapefruit, orange peel and even some subtle lemon zest are also pretty evident and integrate very nicely with a huge malty and sugary sweetness. to be honest, the alcohol is extremely well hidden.
T: huge sugary and malt sweetness is noticed right up front and it has a great hop profile. citrus and grapefruit still present and there's a big creamy finish. again, for 18%, the alcohol is balanced nicely with the big sweet backbone
M: heavy side of medium bodied, leaves a big sugary sweetness that sticks to the teeth and the palate. the alcohol is warming, but inviting
O: this was one of the first brews i had when i got onto the craft beer scene and it was too strong. but this is simply amazing to me right now. i find this well balanced for 18% and i will definitely be grabbing more of these

Have had this maybe a handful of times - from undrinkable (the first time trying it, filtered through a Randall at the Rehoboth brewpub - tooo much!) to actually quite quaffable (as it was with last night's large pour).
A: generously served in a 12oz goblet (menu stated 8oz pour), it's a slightly hazy, copper-orange with a 1/2" slowly fading head with a vague cream-yellow tint. Moderate ringed lacing. One gets the sense that the beer is not light-drinking.
S: aggressively "hoppy" hop aromas, dank, resiny, piney/woody....vibrantly fruity - dried mango....smoothed-out, wort-y, hard-candy-like unfermentables, yet balanced wonderfully against the hops, with the alcohols and phenols present yet surprisingly understated
T/M: as in the smell, they really balanced everything out so well in this batch....actually does not come across nearly as bitter as it's billed - the malt sugars, several notches short of cloying, tone down the bitterness and perhaps the overall intensity of the citrus-resiny, silky-spicy hop flavor itself - that same malt foundation, while surprisingly allowing an almost roasty-nutty, cereal-like grain flavor to somehow poke through, also blankets the burn/bite of the high alcohol superbly - comforting alcohol warmth still manages to ribbon through 2/3 the way through each sip, but it's a creeper for sure....often, in past samplings, came across to me as "hop syrup", but this one was refreshingly on the drier side for once
O: certainly not for everybody, including myself....in the mood for an intense, rich, hoppy cordial of a beer? this is king....and when they nail it, they really nail it, and it's wonderful and an achievement in brewing to marvel at!...something to keep tuned in to batch-to-batch....

A- Dark cooper and cloudy. There is a small head that sticks around throughout the beer. Head livens up with a good swirl of the glass. Very nice alcohol legs/lacing present.
S- Oh helloooo! Alcohol and hops dominate the nose. Smells dank! Hard to pinpoint what kind of hop sent is there. I think it's a combination of floral and grapefruit citrus scent. There is an overall sweetness present.
T- Very complex beer. IInitial sip is of alcohol laced hops and malt. The finish is soooo bitter and soooo boozzy! Sweet as well. There is an overall malty bozzy quality to the aftertaste. Too alcoholic tasting. It's a little better when at room temperature. When it warms, the malty taste balances out some of the alcohol and sweetness, making it more palatable.
M- Full, very rich mouthfeel. Beer really covers the back of the throat. Long finish. It's just too boozy in taste to make this real easy to drink, almost un enjoyable in the mouth.
Overall- This a very full bodied, intensely complex beer. It's too boozy in flavor for it's own good. What did I like about the beer? When it warms, the malty taste balances out some of the alcohol and sweetness. I will never buy this again. Not god offal, but not really my kind of IPA. I'll stick with the 60 and 90 minute IPA from Dogfish Head over this any day of the week. But this is a good beer if you like something more boozy tasting.
*My recommendation would be Avery Brewing's Maharaja for a high abv Imperial IPA over this any day of the week!*

12 oz bottle poured into snifter. This is relatively fresh 120 minute I think?, and not aged by me. Marked "2012K 23:43". 18% ABV.
Appearance: Fluffy off-white head. Pours a semi-clear golden orange color.
Aroma: A big hit of malty sweetness to my nose. A light fruity ester combined with a hint a pine and citrus. The aroma then melds into wet and juicy hops.
Taste: It's quite sweet. To the point of being cloy and nearly unbearable. Can't really taste the hops at all. Very bready.
Mouthfeel: Thick and full-bodied with a syrup/molasses-like presence on the tongue. Medium-carbonation.
Overall: Actually not half bad. I'll be interested to see where 1 year of aging on the 2nd bottle I have takes this beer. 18% ABV, and the wholly sweet nature of this brew make it a slow sipper to enjoy and warm up on a cold night.

Sampled in small tulip.
Appearance: Pours thick (not quite motor oil) with minimal head. Very fine carbonation produces thin off-white ring around glass. Light copper in color with ruby highlights. Just barely darker than 90 min.
Aroma: Alcohol, fruity esters, raisin, pear, rum, dark caramel, brown sugar, over-ripe fruit. Malt produces a very complex sweetness that dominates the nose and the hops are very light in character.
Flavor: Wow, quite a complex beer. If one were to think about the flavors as you taste them it kind of goes like this: Very sweet, rum-raisin early in taste, alcohol burn, followed by hop-bite and then an alcohol warming sensation. Then the lingering bitterness decays to yield a soft malt sweetness followed by a final wave of hops. Dark toasted bread, peppery/spicy hops. Almost candy-like in it's sweetness. Presence of alcohol is dominant. Hop profile drops off as beer warms and the malt character comes forward more.
Mouthfeel: Med-full body with light carbonation. A surprisingly high carbonation level for this beer considering it's ABV. Bitter components are quite firm, but surprisingly ethereal. Ethanol burn warms down the throat to the belly.
Overall: Wow. Just wow. Flavor "play" between the hops, malt, and alcohol is incredible. Warms like a whiskey. Malt sweet is almost belgian-like in character but not belgian-dark (strong dark stone fruits). Hops play back and forth with incredible delight and doesn't completely destroy your palate with bitterness.

12oz. bottle from 2011 into a pint glass
A: Dark golden amber with a rapidly diminishing head on the pour.
S: Surprisingly you can still smell the hops. It smells like a much more alcoholic version of their 90 minute. You can really get the citrusy-pine smell but it tinged throughout the smell. You can't escape it.
T: No hops whatsoever. Don't mistake this for a DIPA. It is quite sweet with a strong malt backbone. Just too strong ale for me.
M: Smoothy feel that is quite thick.
O: This is fine for samples, but a whole bottle is a lot to take in. I think I should have waited longer to let the alcohol die down. To be honest, I have no idea how they call this an DIPA. It is more like a strong ale or a barleywine. This beer really needs to be aged a while or drank superfresh on tap (like I had at DFH).

A: Amber, Jurassic park type color. Crawled all over the glass
S: Boozy cocktail. The first time I 120'd all I could think was Grand Marnier + soda. There's more going on here, though. There's definitely bourbon'y flavors, not too much sweetness or vanilla which I hate, but a <great> counter to the booze.
T: Sickly sweet, bourbon over soda all the way. There's
M: = It really makes me think of a crown+ginger more than anything else. I'm a Hop person, but this is just straight booze, sweetness, (light) smoke, etc. Grand Marnier is also in the picture.
O: This IS a cocktail, letting it sit in a glass whilst doing other stuff is how to drink this. It develops before you open it, in the glass, and as you enjoy it. GREAT beer, in my opinion.

A nice orange/light copper. The amount of head that accumulated at first was surprising considering the abv, but as expected it dissipated very fast. This beer shows its alcohol content in the glass. Looks slightly viscus and has decent legs on it.
Alcohol hits you most prominently on the nose. Behind the alcohol burn I pick up citrus (grapefruit, orange peel) supported very nicely by some big sweet malt notes. There are certainly some unique wine qualities in this beer. You might say tart grapes, or think there is a mead-like quality.
Taste is very much inline with the nose. I immediately felt the alcohol warmth. It starts with a nice amount of bitterness and finally leaves your mouth coated with a big residual sweetness.
Overall, a nice beer that needs to be drank at room temperature or just slightly cooler. Not a 12 oz. bottle to drink by yourself, but nice for a special occasion to share. Cheers!

12oz bottle from iLOVEbeer (thanks man!). Bottled 2/15/13. Served in a Dogfish Head snifter.
Pours deep ruby hued gold with a half finger of near white head. Given the high alcohol, I'm surprised to see a good bit of spotty lace. The etching on the bottom of the snifter keeps bubble rising to maintain a thin hazy layer of head.
Smells punguent and sticky. Orange, pine, grapefruit and toffee. More subtle than expected for all the hopping that DFH touts. Still nice.
Taste is a blast of big sweet honey cake malts with a ton of hops. Orange, peach, citrus rind, fig, caramel, grapefruit and an almost oaky vanilla. Booze is there but it comes across as only half of what's actually in there. This is a great sipper to enjoy over 1-2 hours seeing as it seems to evolve a bit as it warms.
Thick, oily, slick yet sticky feel with a nice light carbonation. Long lasting sweet finish with a good dose of bitter.
Glad to get a whole bottle to try- the only other time I had this was only a couple ounces. Plenty of depth to enjoy over an extended sitting so I'm glad I took my time on this one. Also glad to have a 2011 to try soon to compare. Overall this is far from my favorite imperial IPA but it's a uniquely enjoyable experience that every hophead should have at some point.

So much anticipation on finally cracking the big ol' 120 ipa.
Poured a few oz into a small tulip giving way to a hazy orange body with a small white head. Long lasting head for such a high abv beer.
Lots of malt sweetness hits along with alcohol and fruity orange and peach hops.
A heavy handed malt sweetness comes through in the taste. Perceptible alcohol but definitely not over the top or anything. Fruity hop flavors.
The 120 is a syrupy smooth fairly full bodied beer.

This isn't a regular review. I love this beer, and I only finished my second bottle.
About a year ago, I had this for my first time. Today my second. This review encompasses both experiences.
When I first saw this brew on a shelf of a local store, I was astonished. Without hesitation I picked it up. Got home, warmed up the tub, and opened up a Rolling Stone. Glass poured, I was blown away by the pleasant warmth, sweetness, fermentation, colour, scent, and simply appreciated this fine beverage. It was so good you'd think it'd be gone in 15 minutes, but the beverage satisfies, it lingers on your tongue, it was sipped for the course of a couple hours. Feeling good, having a cigarette, listening to classic rock, this was a beer to make you a king.
I tried it again today and really paid no attention to it besides simply enjoying it, yet again, for a couple of hours. This really is, the best beer I have ever had.

2012 vintage. 12 oz. bottle served in a snifter. Poured a hazy gold with a finger of white head that quickly dissipated. Big piney hop aroma. Flavor started off with a nice hit of hop bitterness. Finish was very sweet. Lots of malt and full bodied. Not as boozy as I would have expected. Glad I got to try it, but I wouldn't go out of my way to get it again.

I assume that this is the kind of stuff the Egyptians drank - and no wonder they went extinct. I mean, I know this juice is the kind of stuf that can get you lifted, but back in Raul's dark days, he has siphoned diesel fuel that tasted better than this rocket sauce. It was a nice experience, but Raul does not approve.

What I am reviewing here is a 2011 bottle of 120 Minute IPA. As I rate it a 5 across the board, I will tell you that two years I let this age, it will benefit from a few more. At that point, I would love to go higher if possible. Perhaps I am rating this on potential or the fact it is just an awesome beer already that is only going to get much better. I fortunately have one more in the cellar, so time will tell. If you are not tight with a great beer rep, seller, store etc by now, befriend one soon so you can get ahold of some brews like this. They are very limited and very expensive, but almost always worth it. This one was VERY worthy of the $11 price I paid for the 12 oz. bottle. Plus the two agonizing years of waiting. It IS that good.
Color was hazy, burnt-orange
Nose of boozy, malty-bread, figs
Taste of booze, malt, figs, vanilla, bourbon
Mouthfeel is creamy, oily, awesomeness
If you have one now wait. If you have two, drink one and wait for the other. It is not your everyday IPA. AT ALL! It is more like a superior Barleywine with a hop presence. Any way you slice it, it's awesome.

Cloudy and light brown in appearance. Smell for me was not at all what I expected. I thought it be very hoppy, instead smelled boozy malty and a little fruity like fig. Taste was also very different and hard to detect much hops. Tastes much like it smelled for me, primary flavors were malty, caramel, figs etc. super high alcohol content not that noticeable. But beer is very sweet and different than I expected, (not hoppy at all). Glad I tried it but tastes more like a barley wine. Hated it at first, but grew on me as I got accustomed to the different taste. Definitely a unique brew that was a little misleading for me.

A special treat to celebrate my 500th BA beer review, although I would have classified it as a barley wine rather than a DIPA? Bottled in 2011 and remarkably smooth. Has many of the elements of a good scotch, but I had no idea it was 18% ABV until looking at this site.
Pours a hazy, orange amber. It's oily and near-viscous in appearance, with no head and very little carbonation. Malt-forward aroma is milder than I expected, but still with a lot going on. I get a "sharp bitterness", with copper and oak, but am not doing it justice. The taste is more developed, with an initial malt sweetness that builds into a crescendo of more rounded bitterness during the body. The finish lingers for almost a full minute, and other than a hint of alcohol warmth at the end, there's no sign of the unbelievably high ABV. I can't pick out individual flavours to list, but it is both well balanced yet distinctly unique.
Although the bottle clearly mandates that this could be aged for decades, as a self-pronounced "hop head" I am disappointed that the citrus and tropical fruit tones have almost completely disappeared in the last year. Still an iconic beer on which I'm very glad to have splurged!

This beer has an interesting mix of flavors with a decent mouth feel. I have had this beer several times and each year it seems to be slightly different. If this beer is available it is a must try in my opinion. This is the 90 minute on steroids.

Poured from a bottle into a snifter. 2012 bottle aged about 6 months.
A - Pours a deep gold, almost amber, with a wispy, 1/2 finger head. (Pretty much as expected for an 18%'er) That said, the head maintained at least some presence all the way until the end of the glass. No lacing to speak of.
S - Immensely powerful aroma of freshly made toffee, sticky sweet breads, fusel alcohols which smell a little like magic marker, and an herbal/botanical blend. Smells closer to a barleywine or an old ale than a DIPA, but also totally unique.
T - Surprisingly, a candied sugar maltiness kicks things off, followed by HUGE hops in the form pineapple, mango, oranage marmalade, and some bitter grapefruit. Vinous white wine grape esters swirl about. Minty hop bite in the finish. The whole thing is drenched in booze, but I mean that in a good way as it's not at all "hot" on the tongue. ALL the flavors here jacked up to 11 and extremely rich. Some similarities to a good port wine. Man, this is amazing. Is there a way to rate something a 10?
M - Surprisingly delicate bodied, and slightly slick/sticky. Just enough carbonation to tickle the palate. Pretty spot on. Between the booze and the richness, the smallness of the sips I found myself taking while drinking this borders on the ridiculous.
O -Freaking amazing. Unique and complex. Too extreme? If your a wuss, maybe. If not, you can totally lose yourself in the depths of this powerful boozy beast. Yes, it's intense. Yes, the flavors can be jarring, and it might not be the most balanced beer available. That said...may I have another?

Have had this many times both on draft and by this bottle. THis is without a doubt an extreme brew. I think of it as the port of beers. Big Alcohol and Sugary hops up front, tropical and dark fruits as it warms. Very rich mouthfeel, similar to high end BW's. Taste is toffee, maple coated hops, figs, and booze. I feel it gets even better with age. Drink this bad boy over and evening and smell and taste the wonderful change as it warms.

Smells like sugar water and alcohol. You definitely smell more booze as it warms up. I poured half and drank it, and then poured the other half and drank it. Color is similar to other DFH brews like the ninety minute. More carbonation than I had expected. It tastes like beer with a shot of gin. It is sweet, but not too sweet. I like the novelty of an 18% abv beer but it isn't something that I would pick up every year. I will cellar one to see how it changes. I feel like 120 has a fan base like Fantome beers do, but I do not care for those much either.

Decided see what I had of intrest in my cellar so why not a five year old 120.
A: A hazy, medium copper with a deep reddish-orange hue. Some carbonation is evident in initial pour but it look fairly flat there after. The is just a small collar and a thin film of tiny off-white bubbles on top.
S: A mild citrus hops aroma is around but time has changed, I'm thinking of Tums but that could also be the moderately strong malt sweetness and moderate caramel malt aromas. Age had also brought a some moderate raisin notes and a touch of oxidation as well.
T: A rich malt sweetness with a solid hops bitterness. Note surprisingly the hops brillance has faded but there is still moderate lemon and citrus peel flavor along with a light raisin flavor. The balance is fairly bitter however there is a lot of sweetness from the malt. The finish is sweet and the aftertaste is a hops bitterness.
M: The light carbonation gives the perception is thicker than a medium-full bodied beer. Alcohol warmth is apparent
O: Even fresh this beer is has been a too sweet for my taste that sweetness has only increased as the hops have diminished their contribution. Time has mellowed the alcohols character and brought some raisin notes out from the malt.

12 oz. bottle, no bottled on or freshness date present. Super stoked to have landed one of these bad boys after waiting over a year to get my hands on one. Tried a friend's glass that he'd ordered on tap last year from Lunar Brewing in our hometown. Excited to try it and be able to fully appreciate it this time around. My first beer of the night, and most likely will also be my last beer of the night, it's 18.00% abv is destined to doom me.
Uncapped and poured into a Boulevard tulip.
A - Pours me a nice standard burnt sienna orange IPA color with tons of sediment and bubbles floating about, giving me a nice one and a half finger fluffy cream head. Looks great, but you wouldn't know this was the monster of an IPA that it is just by looking at it.
S - Tangy, wet, juicy, citrus hops. Fresh hop resins. Fresh grapefruit. A little bit of a alcohol pungency, but it is far from being anywhere near obvious. A fresh and lively type of smell. Would love to see what an aged version would smell and taste like.
T - Wow. Unforgiving blast of spicy bitter hops. Many different types of hop sensations to be had here. Juicy, fruity, floral. And then spicy and peppery. Definitely a beer to warm the soul on a winter's night. You would never know this beer is masking an 18.00% abv, although it is slowly working it's magic upon me. Sticky brown sugars begin to emerge as the beer starts to warm.
M - Very creamy texture to it almost, warming your throat on the way down. Sticky and resinous in the aftertaste, clinging to all sides of your mouth.
Overall, a beer that lives up to it's hype sufficiently well I'd say. Tremendous feat especially for what has to be one of the most bitter tasting IPA's on the planet, and one that ages well, no doubt. I would love to be able to snag another bottle or two to cellar away, but I don't see that happening for at least another year or so. Until then, I recommend snagging a bottle (or a case) while you can.
