Too extreme to be called beer? 120 Minute IPA is brewed to a colossal 45-degree plato, boiled for a full two hours while being continuously hopped with high-alpha American hops, then dry-hopped daily in the fermenter for a month and aged for another month on whole-leaf hops!

Been waiting for the day to have this on tap.
Pours a deep copper orange, hazy with a sexy white foamy head, bubbles clinging everywhere
Smell is a bit of a let down for being only a couple months old. Only slight hop punch of front with a lingering sweet citrus. A bit of sweet alcohol as well with some evergreen to it.
Taste is surprisingly smooth, the notes of everything is rounded orange peel, bitter lemon, and a ton of pine. The heat is there can't deny it, it's great but I was expecting in your face hops actually has a lot of bready malt to it.
Very silky, grasps the tongue a bit, drinks like a lower abv dipa.
Ya it's one of those hyped beers, but eh, wasn't a hundred percent impressed

On tap, at Bully’s, Columbia PA.
10 oz served into a Dogfish Head Signature glass at my request. Thanks Dave and Erik.
Notes taken at bar, when served.
Pours a thick one finger head, which rapidly reduces to a thin cap, easily revived though, it is a live ale.
Surprisingly light color, medium amber at best, fine bubble carbonation.
Big malt aroma when first poured, but quickly overpowered by “crushed hops”, alcohol, citrus, lemon, dried fruit (fig?), yeast and bread. Spicy. Complex.
Very boozy, hot entry on the palate, followed by a hop “burn”. Then some light malt comes forward, only to lose to the hops in the end. Very full, oily, mouth feel.
Long finish of hop oil, not overly bitter, but coats your mouth forever.
Well I have had this before in bottle and really did not like it at all.
The draft is a much more pleasant experience by far.
Definite hop burn, but that being said the overall flavor is quite good (tasty malt and spicy hops).
You really can’t say this is a balanced ale, but still an interesting experience, and I am thankful for it.
Seems at its best warm, say 55 + degrees. Everything that this ale has comes out then, and that is quite a lot. A huge ale. ABV is 18% or better depending on the keg, and it is very noticeable. That being said it’s OK by me as I am a “big beer” fan.

This is the late 2011 batch of this beer - I had it on draft at American Craft.
A- Orange colored decently sized head, for the ABV 18%. Huge spider web like lacing.
S- Big front of malt character, then grapefruit/ mango hop notes.
T - The complexity of this beer made me anxious to try it on draft. The first and most lingering note is the hop flavor, but it drinks more liek a barley wine, with distinct malt flavors, that are present in most of dogfishhead's big IPAs. A barly wine/congac type of warmth radiates through you after drinking this, which is the only indication of a high 18% ABV.
M- The ABV is apparent, but its smooth and meant to be sipped as slow as you can go.
O - An extreme beer at 18% but more of a barley wine than an imperial IPA. It is priced at the top tier and it is very good, considering it should last you an hour.Note: This ruins all other beers.

**Note: Ha, ok this was my first taste of 120. It was the last drink of the night. My notes are a bit rambling so I'll be trying this one again and editing soon.
A - Lighter than I'd have though. Thick but inviting. nice head. Little carbonation. Alcohol lacing grips the glass forever.
S - Citrus and hops. Lemon + malts. Nice, not crazy.
T - Very complex. A lot going on here. Syrupy and hops and wood, malts all mask the ridiculous amount of alcohol. Yum. Makes me want to keep drinking (sipping) it. Wow is really well balanced and super warming. Really nice mouthfeel. Makes you smile and nod with each sip. Thick thick, tongue coating, and sticky.
O - Hmm. This is like drinking whiskey/bourbon in complexity: Take it slow and savor ever sip.

I had this 120 min at the restaurant in Gaithersburg and it was super fresh, having been released about a week beforehand (I had it on Jul 19). Previously I'd only had aged bottles and they always tasted like barleywines. Fresh 120 minute actually tastes/smells like an extra malty and boozy IPA.
A: Cloudy orange colour and a 1 cm head that lasts. 4.5
S: Intense hops. Amarillo to the point of feeling like I'm eating it. Very green aroma. 4.5
T: The hoppiness is there, but I noticed the strong, malty base more. Very roasty malt. The crystal malt that gives it a strong toffee flavour. Pretty sweet with some smoke. Not especially bitter. Oily green hop aftertaste sticks to the tongue. Dare I say, it could have used more hops. Unique and yum though. 4.5
M: Foamy and thick 4.5
O 4.

On tap at the Meddlesome Moth in Dallas. 2011 Vintage
Pours a cloudy orangish color, with a surprising amount of off white head that leaves thick lacing, considering the abv.
There is a decent amount of hops, mainly citrusy, in the nose, but this is still highly malty for an ipa. Alcohol is also quite present.
The hops are very muted. There is an incredible sweetness up front filled with caramel and honey. On the backside the citrus and grapefruit come out slightly, but is also entwined with the strong presence of alcohol.
Medium body and carbonation. It is a bit thicker than most ipas and is very oily.
Overall, I like this beer, but only can handle it in very small quantity (and not just because of the high alcohol content).

Pours a lovely golden color, see through and clear. No retention to speak of and the head dissipated fairly quickly. Aroma is boozy which resides to the large sweet malty body. Aggressive hopping also allows a large pineyness and earthy/resinous dominance on the aroma. The taste is a balance of three extremes. Those of hops, alcohol, and sweetness. For me these three meet a middleground which I found very complex and satisfying. Alcohol on the palette is detectable but the sweetness and hop flavor and bitterness mingle and make it not hot. Huge pine resinous type flavor with a little citrus. Honey and caramel-like flavors balance with the huge over the top hoppiness. The beer is full bodied and a little syrupy. Carbonation is good. The mouthfeel does not get in the way of enjoying this beer, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. Overall, I love this beer. The balance of the extremes is very impressive. This beer is not for everyone, but for hopheads with a sense of adventure you will love this.

Had this On-Tap at O'Bannon's 11/11/11
A: Orange, with a small amount of head, hazy
S: so hoppy it almost burns, but in the most pleasant way possible.
T: sweet, hoppy, but not as bitter as you'd think. the flavor of the hops is incredible, with the booze very well masked.
M: definitely feel the booze. little syrupy, but not as bad as other 18% beers I've had (Tokyo*). Medium carbonation, but goes down smooth, then warms the stomach.
O: Loved this beer. very different from any other IIPA I've had. almost a class of its own, as the bitterness is much less, the hop flavor is much more present and not masked by bitterness, and of course that ever present sweetness.

A: cloudy orange, minimal clarity, thick bubbly white head, thick lacing
S: nose features a huge sweet malt profile with lots of molasses, some honey, this is followed by assertive hop profile that leans the tHe earthy resinous side of things. The booziness is reminiscent of a spirit... Maybe a vodka
T: taste starts off very malty and sweet, some of the sweetness is cut with pine cones, this is followed by significant alcohol heat... Considering the abv it is decently balanced. Kinda tastes like a 90 minute with a shot dropped in it. This seems more like a gimmick than an enjoyable drinking experience.
Mf: body is relatively light considering the robust alcohol content, high carbonation
O: glad to have finally tried this, not really my thing, I'm all for ipas and high gravity brews, but this one goes into the range of being too much

Poured a light, clear tangerine-amber with a small cap of off-white head. Relatively mild aroma dominated by sweet caramel, hints of grapefruit and orange, and some hints of alcohol.
Moderate carbonation and a sticky, oily mouthfeel. Burst of very sweet caramel/honey biscuit up front followed by pine, tangerine, grapefruit, and a warming finish with more malt sweetness and booze.
Worth trying on tap at least once but I don't know whether I'd seek this out in the bottle. The alcohol was noticeable but better masked than I had expected. The hops are big, but again, I wouldn't peg this at 120+ IBUs. Fun to try, though.

2011 version on-tap, served in a tulip glass.
Appearance- Pale golden yellow with a small, frothy straw colored head. Little carbonation and lightly active bubbles rising slowly to the top.
Smell - Very clean, brisk, hoppy smell. Big plant-like aroma, earthy pine and slight straw. Hops dominate the aroma, creating imagery of endless forests of hop vines.
Taste- Extremely flavorful and much sweeter than expected. Big malts give flavors of sweet biscuit and faint honey. The mondo amount of hops create an active, resinous phenomenon in my mouth, with notes of big earthy pine and citrus. It's like biting into a hop. Definitely boozy, and the warming effects of the alcohol can be felt quickly. I like the bigness and balance- enormously sweet malts meet enormously bitter hops meet enormous alcohol.
Mouthfeel- Syrupy, thick and slightly oily. Very full-bodied, but still refreshing.
Overall- Rich, big and bold. Oddly drinkable despite such massive characteristics. This beer is so humongous it's like an "IPA concentrate" of sorts. All other IPAs are made from diluted Dogfish Head 120. A bit pricey, but certainly worth the try.

holy moly! this is the hophead mecca as far as i am concerned. pours a heady cloudy golden bronze color with what surely must be the thickest head in the history of beer. textured like a bouncyball! smell is elemental hops, resins, oils, saps, lupulin, all of it. there is a noticable alcohol smell as well, which of course there must be at 18%. the flavor is hectic, evacuating all other flavors from the mouth in favor of the hops in this beer, its got a slight bready thing going on, but its more like a hop loaf. a novel idea brilliantly executed, but this could never be anyone's daily drink. its just a huge huge beer. mouthfeel is sticky and chewy and bogged down by the absurd hopping. i like to have a couple of these every year, and i find the on tap version to be even more pronounced than the bottled version. another classic from dogfish head

Intense! That best describes this beer. Draft poured in a small snifter. Darker yellow with a nice inch of fairly dense foam. My color could be off a bit, the bar was dark. The smell is great. Like sticking your face in a bushel of hops. At first the taste is a little much. Extreme sweet hops with alcohol. Once your taste buds recover the sweet, juciy hoppiness takes the stage with some oak and citrus making an appearance. Mouthfeel is medium, not as heavy as you'd expect from something this big. Overall an enjoyable experience. Defiantly a one beer show. Not only due to the ABV by your taste buds are a little worn out when finished. Interesting ans unique beer. Highly recommended.

Wiseman Justin Reporting:
Found this randomly in Libertyville, IL at a bar called Firkin. Rock on Firkin.
Appearance - Pours a hazy light amber with a pinky sized head. Head fades into a sloppy ring around the glass with pretty large bubbles. Lacing is poor and head retention is equally poor.
Smell - Very strong, almost bitingly so. Hops on the nose for sure so we're in the right place. Wet evergreens; like walking through a forest of these trees after an intense rain. I get some grapefruit and maybe citrus in there too, but for the most part the hops take the spotlight. I love the smell and maybe I'm biased, if so deal with it.
Taste - Smoky, oaky, hoppy, and all around woody. This is not a hop bomb by any means and might be one of the first true "sipping" IPA's. I get some citrus in the aftertaste but again, for the most part, woody hops dominate the show.
Mouthfeel - Smooth/Slick; almost "smokey" mouthfeel. The mouthfeel is exactly what you would expect and even desire with a beer this big. Despite the high alcohol content something about it makes you want to swish this around in your mouth and experience everything you can, while you can.
Overall: It's most damning quality is what makes it a masterpiece. This beer is a very mature and deceptively aggressive IPA. It's much like a porcupine in sheep's clothing. You complain that it's too soft and when you pull your hand back it's bleeding all over the place. This beer cannot be drunken quickly. Some other 18% beers you can, if you wanted to, drink fast with the consequence being you get drunk and you don't enjoy the beer (Black Tuesday, World Wide Stout come to mind). Not this beer. Something about it's very nature forces you to slow down and enjoy the ride. Again a very balanced and very mature IPA; one that would pair very well with a cigar of the finest quality. Enjoy the good life with 120 minute from Dogfishhead and your favorite cigar.
By the way, I thought this beer was 10% alcohol while I was drinking it. Just an assumption. It might explain why I was having such a hard time drinking it with more haste. I'm not in college anymore. Despite missing a perfect score in every area it's still an exceptional beer. Truly a remarkable accomplishment considering the ABV.
EDIT (12-19-2011): Wiseman Nick does not endorse Wiseman Justin's review. DFH 120 Minute is a terrible, syrupy mess of a beer. Wiseman Justin is a blithering idiot, but a wiseman nonetheless. See you soon friend.
EDIT (4-21-2012): Wiseman Justin reflects upon this beer and grossly disagree's with Wiseman Nick. Any number of variables could have polluted Wiseman Nick's 120 minute and therefore both Wisemen would and could be right without having to resort to "non-Wiseman" behavior (such as name calling). See you in 9 months friend.

Had on draft at 6-and-Save in New Kensington, left over from their Halloween party the night before. Review written from notes/memory the day before. What a treat.
A: Pours a hazy golden yellow color. Not a lot of head on the pour, but what was their did cling to the glass for a bit.
S: Huge notes of Malt Sweetness and earthy pine tones.
T: Big big flavors of both malt sweetness and booziness. The 18% is not hidden, nor would I have expected it to be. A moderate amount of earthy pine flavors from the hops, and a moderate amount of hop bitterness on the back end. Hops are far from overwhelming here, as is typical for Dogfish.
This beer reminds me far more of a big, fresh Barleywine than it does an IPA. The huge sweetness and readily detectible booziness is enjoyable, but doesn't seem "to style" for me.
M: Lots of thick stickiness here left in the mouth. I would have enjoyed more hops on the finish, and carbonation could have been a touch higher for my liking, but all in all pretty solid.
D/O: A fun, enjoyable beer that I would certainly repeat if I found it again. However, if for no other reason than for the sake of my sobriety, I'd probably not opt to have two back-to-back. An interesting brew from Dogfish, for sure.

On-tap at Prime 16 into a snifter.
A: Bright, clear copper body beneath a shockingly persistent cap of fine tan head. There's even good light lace. I'm impressed.
S: Very sweet + boozy, but with some nice sherry notes on top of the pure brown sugar + ethanol. Maybe a hint of bitter hops aroma, too (the first time I've ever noticed hops in this beer at all). It's better than I expected, but still pretty one-dimensional.
T: Caramel + brown sugar up front. Solventy alcohol in the middle. Bitter grapefruit hops on the finish. Sweetness carries through on the aftertaste. I like that I can actually sense the hops, but it's nevertheless a crazy, overdone gimmick if you ask me.
M: Thick, sticky and full of creamy carbonation. Could be any better for what it is.
O: I've never been the biggest fan of the big DFH beers - while I enjoy them in their silliness, I find that they all taste 90% alike. This must have been a very fresh keg, as for once I could actually tell that 120 was brewed with hops. I'm curious to see what the bottle in my cellar is like after a decade or so, but other than that I don't anticipate trying to drink this beer ever again.
Cheers!

Tried it on tap at a zombie hop fest. I was expecting great things from this but was let down.
Head became a whisp of nothing no lacing. (As expected from an 18 abv beer)
Smells: like freaking jet fuel... made from raisins. Also a little bit of model airplane glue.
Tastes: like freaking jet fuel. Super sweet which helps to mask the 18% abv, but just barely. Honestly though it tastes like alcoholic raisins. Not something I would buy but I'm glad I tasted it.
Mouthfeel: not bubbly enough to support the alcoholic sweetness.
Overall: I'll never buy this but I'm glad I got to try it. It's too sweet and too strong for my liking.
I'll pick 69/90 miniute IPA over this anytime.

Wow, it has been a long road you and me mister 120. This was the first beer I ever reviewed on BA, and boy was that some time ago. Man how things have changed... for all of us!
Poured on tap into a snifter glass at Pizza Paradiso Dupont DC.
A really nice off white, off caramel colored head with tiny bubbles presenting a creamy like appearance. A real glowing orb of cloudy orange and light amber. As the beer settles it becomes clear showing off it's great orange transparency.
Nose is a distinct and real interesting unique flavor. It is without question, salted caramels. Slight hints of sweetness, no hop presence but like the smell of perfect French sea salted caramel.
Taste is mild sugar hopped citrus orange and some grapefruit, but mostly a great sweet tangerine citrus sweetness. Caramel like malts come to match the nose profile. Texture is big and bold but surprisingly not syrupy, not even boozy for such a high abv, but gives just a hint of sharp and very quick disappearing pine stinging hop with minor alcohol on the finish.
Overall surprisingly impressive. Not that hoppy really but also not as sweet as I remember it. The salted caramel angle is real nice and I certainly don't remember that at all. And for a whopping eighteen abv, I honestly could hardly tell. I've had 13-11-10 percent barleywines that just flat out knocked me out, this... like drinking a charm. Fantastic. Perhaps a re-review of the bottle should be in the cards.

Had this beer at Al's of Hampden (Enola, PA) on 10-15-11.
A: White frothy head with good retention sits on a bright golden honey colored ale. The head stays around for a while and clings to the glass.
S: Pungently sweet malts mixed with undeniable citrus/orange zest hops blast through on the nose. Candied citrus and sweet leathery malts. It almost smells syrupy.
T: Layers upon layers of candied malts and citrus hops. The malts seem to be a 1000lb. weight in this beer. Just when you've extracted one layer, its cousin pops up. Then, you're toiling with the complexity of the hops, which tend to be a little over shadowed by the monster malt bomb.
M: Large, heavy and strong. This beer is like a malt steamroller in your mouth. It's size and profile dictates a beer that should be tacky and palate burning, but surprisingly it isn't. Then again, the 18%abv could have been catching up to me.
D: Definitely a once-in-a-while sipping beer. Enjoy this beer responsibly, as it will sneak up on you.

I'm surprised that I have never written a review for this beer, as I have had a love hate relationship with it for a long time, beginning when I first became interested in beer.
DFH 120 Minute IPA has a dark orange body that is almost opaque from all of the haze in it. The head is small, tan, and pretty solid looking. Although the retention is fairly good, there really isn't much lacing.
The aroma has a lot of everything. There is a strong scent of hops, with pine and grapefruit taking the forefront, but there is just a ton of malt sweetness also, with caramel being the most powerful aroma.
This thing is such a huge booze bomb. No matter how many times I try it, that is the conclusion that I come to. Hints of grapefruit and pine combine with some sweet malt and a huge honey-like taste. Mostly, there is a generic sweetness and ton of alcohol. It isn't even especially hot, but it has a strong alcohol flavor. It does remind me a little bit of 90 minute, which I do like, but I can't seem to enjoy it.
Big and mean.
120 is an interesting beer, but it is just too boozy for me. I have tried it quite a few times now, and I just cannot seem to get past all of the alcohol. With that said, I think I prefer not enjoying this beer on-tap, as I enjoy it even less out of the bottle.

I thought it was going to look like crude oil. What I got was a clear brown elixir with a soapy, iridescent head. Bubbles form toward the top and flaot very slowly upward. Some super thick stuff here.
Similar hop profile to 90 minute - herbal and cocoa flavors. Has a considerable amount of booze, but is nicely covered by the syrupy sweetness. Seriously, ge me a stack of pancakes.
It's like the port wine of beers. Very desserty.

Elusive, missed it on tap a few times now, Sunset Grill.
A- Amber caramel into a 10oz ish snifter. Small white cloud but no real head. Tiny ring on edges with no lace at all.
S- Like a Barleywine and IIPA. Hoppy but also has a huge caramel malt presence. Hops are both citrus and herbal to me. Just a bit of solvent alcohol, like a spirit.
T- Hmmmm...Hops die down here a lot to me. Mostly like what an 17+ % ale would taste like, big caramel, raisin and oxidation. Hops are just a bit herbal and pine to me. Alcohol obviously comes into play. Very sweet.
MF- Nice level of lower silky carbonation in an oily substantial body. HOT from alcohol.
This batch failed to be hoppy to me. I had a nice 2010 hoppy sample. HUGE beer that doesn't being hops this time. Too hot and sweet.

On tap at Toronado, San Diego.
Like the 90 minute, the 120 minute is a bit too sweet for me. I was simply pummeled by candied fruit and punched in the mouth by all of the sugary malt.
If these kind of IPA's are your thing, you'll love it. If you like floral/tropical IPAS (Citra, Pliny, Sculpin) or hoppy/piney IPAs this one is not for you.
Glad I got to try it, but I'm moving on. It was funny to see everyone at Toronado drinking the same thing.

On draft at palm harbor house of beer, poured to a chimay goblet.
Appearance: burnt honey orange, one finger of white head that recedes to a film, decent lacing.
Smell: big hoppy aroma lots of tropical fruit. There is also a lot of malt in the nose.
Taste: Malt bomb. Super sweet. The finish is kind of hoppy but the sweetness really takes the spotlight.
Mouthfeel: Pretty smooth, explosive finish. Sweetness lingers for a long time. Nice alcohol warming but very little alcohol taste.
Overall: I'm a little disappointed, I love this beer aged a few years it reminds me of a big barleywine, but I was expecting a hop bomb.... not so much.

Served on tap the the when pigs fly pizzeria in kittery, Maine. I'm afraid this beer is just too much for me.
Pours a relatively unimposing clear light amber color. Some white foam. Even the smell is subdued. Little pine, some malt, pretty empty.
The taste - whoa, what to say here.. Full on hop and alcohol assault, with forced cough syrup taste and mouthfeel. Is thick in my mouth, and quite heavy. It burns it burns.
I understand why this beer is brewed and why some might enjoy it, but I definitely did not. Found it to be virtually undrinkable.
