This rare gem was pulled out from the magical cellar at Monk's Cafe for a DFH dinner last night. What a treat. I had been salivating about trying this since it was listed on the Monk's website a month or so back.

The beer poured a deep brown also black color with a slight but noticable off white head. Great to see since this beer was from 1999 and still had a bit of carbonation. Although this is listed as a Belgian dark ale, it had the look of a Baltic porter. Yum.

The nose had some liquory quality to it, an anish and dried fruit tone also. The taste was very smooth yet the main characteristics of this beer were still very strong, even at 7 years so. There were some strong plum and date notes along with a nice chocolately taste and feel. This was a very drinkable and pleasant beer and I was very pleased when the server came around and refilled my glass.

Unfortunately, this was probably the last keg of this rare beer but it was definitely worth a try and I am glad to have said I had this before the well dried all up.

Had some of this at their Monks beer/spirits dinner 10-8-02.

This beer has been brewed for ther pub only. It is a porter made using belgian yeast. They took the Raison d'etre yeast and pitched it into their porter recipe. It is cola colored and looks very low carbonated. There is not much nose and it is interesting looking.. A smooth mouth greets you to tastes of deep plum and hop bitterness in the dry finish. Very interesting combination of the belgian and porter styles. As it warms it improves in flavor and depth.
