The beer pours an amber color with a 1/2" white head that fades to lacing. The aroma is average. It has a very strong alcohol scent that boasts of sour raspberries and not much else. It's not as inviting as a lambic or regular fruit ale. The taste is good. It has a smooth raspberry flavor, but it goes down real slow and warm. This is a beer to be savored not rushed through. I appreciate the concept, but where is the line in the sand. Dogfish Head keep making these high alcohol numbers that are hard to enjoy because they are too damn intense. The original lineup is flavorful and highly drinkable, because the alcohol is kept in check. The mouthfeel is decent. It is a full bodied beer with less than adequate carbonation. This is a cool concept beer, but so are most of my homebrews. The problem is, I'm the only one who enjoys drinking them.

Long story short, opening night at Birch and Barley, the wait staff was not sure what the different taps were. Someone told me that they had Life and Limb on draft so I ordered it and it turned out to be Fort.

Poured in a modified strange, served on draft at the Birch and Barley/Churchkey opening. White tight head forms quickly with moderate to high carbonation to support it, falls as you drink leaving lacing on the glass. Brown / orange in color, lots of haze, cannot see through this beer.

Aroma is complex and sour. Smells like alcohol, dried fruits, lots of sweetness, some apricots, some raspberries, honey, and citrus. Hard to pick up any specific hop character but its there.

Flavor of the beer is pretty odd. Strong / warming forward sensation. Kind of biting on the back of the tongue, almost has a wine like character to it. Hop bitterness is lost in the sour / sweet tones of the fruit. Really like dried cranberries or some other berries. Drinkability moderate, mouthfeel full.

Overall, a good experience, even if I never got my Life and Limb.

Thanks to slasher007 for sharing this beer.

Pours orange/red with a white head. Very clear. The aroma is strong on the berries with some alcohol. The flavor is strong raspberry with a lot of hot alcohol. Mouthfeel is medium and very syrupy. Low carbonation. Not a bad beer, but I wish the alcohol was a little more hidden. Interesting but probably not worth the $20 a bottle it sales for here in Dallas.

A: The beer is cloudy orange in color and poured with a thin layer of off white bubbles that quickly dissipated, leaving only a ring of bubbles on the surface around the edge of the glass.
S: There are light to moderate aromas of raspberries in the nose along with some notes of alcohol.
T: The taste is very similar to the smell and is dominated by flavors of raspberries, although there isn’t that much in the way of sweetness and the taste of alcohol is only really perceptible towards the finish.
M: It feels full-bodied and somewhat syrupy on the palate with a light amount of carbonation. There is a moderate amount of warming from the alcohol, which is most evident in the finish.
O: The beer definitely tastes strong and is something that needs to be sipped very slowly when considering its strength; however enough of the alcohol is masked from the taste so it’s not overly that difficult to drink.

Busted one of these opens for my mom's annual Xmas party - shared it with a bunch of friends. Bottle is from July 2007.

A - Reddish orange - almost copper, looks like it has some suspended solids in there. Thin tannish head that dissipates to a reasonably attractive lace.

S - Raspberries and booze, a bit of solvent in there (a la nail polish remover). Raspberry tart this ain't. Doesn't smell like a beer, but more like a raspberry vodka type deal.

T - Yuck - this is overly hot. Starts like sweet raspberries, but ends like straight vodka.

M - It's hard to get a sense of mouthfeel, as that would entail taking a sip big enough to make a judgment. It seems medium-bodied, and relatively smooth, with only slight carbonation. One of the better features of this brew!

D - Drainpour city - even shared amongst six people the 750ml bottle is too much. Might work better as a mixer or as a shot. I was able to swallow, which elevates it above Triple Bock...

The more Dogfish Head beer I try, the less I like their brews. 90 Minute IPA is good, the rest of it is too boozy, spicy, yeasty, etc. I suppose it's good that they're pushing the limits of craft brewing, but I'm just not into this stuff.

Another beer that has been sitting ominously in the back of my fridge since I bought a bottle in its first 750ml release. The beer pours with a frothy, though thin, pale, off-white colored head. The beer is absolutely, stunningly, brilliantly clear and is a pink hued, deep golden color. The aroma smells strongly of raspberry cough-syrup, with just a faint wisp of rotten raspberry pulp. The raspberry notes are fairly complex, with a full fleshy, skin-like and even woody seed character to it. Having said all that, it is pretty one-dimensionally raspberry driven.

Not nearly as sticky and sweet as I was expecting, it is even somewhat light. The beer is sweet though, but not cloying and it has a clean raspberry flavor to it that is not nearly as syrup-like as I expected. Clean notes of raspberry pulp, mix with a touch of oxidized, sherry like, malt and only a hint of warming alcohol in the finish. The beer is fairly carbonated, which helps to lighten thing up a bit as well. Raspberry notes dominate the flavor profile, with just a hint of aged and caramelized malt character noticeable.

That slightly rancid aromatic note seems to pick up a bit with time, though it never really becomes entirely off-putting. This beer is not nearly as bad as I was expecting (I was expecting something more cloying and syrup-like), but it is not all that great either. Worth trying, but I just can't seem to get into these super high gravity beers. I wonder if an unfiltered version of these beers would be more complex tasting, cause that is really my main complaint. These come off tasting so clean as to be down-right simplistic in character.

I wanted to get my hands on this beer for a very long time. When I finally found it I bought a few bottles and had some at the brewpub. I love the intensity that this beer has. It's super string and very flavorful. The beer tingled your tongue and sweet and tart raspberry goodness. The alcohol leaves a mellow burning in the after taste. The color is a pretty reddish pink. It's got a pretty heavy feel to it as well with not much head. I enjoy this beer on it's own just sipping it over the course an hour or so. Very strong, it'll knock your socks off.

Poured into oversized wine glass:

Pours reddish orange with a thin head that recedes - but, nice retention for abv.

The smell is of raspberries with bready (pie-crust) notes. Smells like raspberry pie soaked in alcohol.

The taste is of raspberry liqueur. Aging this one for over a year, but alcohol is still sharp. This is more of a raspberry liqueur than a beer, though there is a bit of carbonation. The raspberry is not "artificial" or syrupy (well, maybe a bit). But, in the end, it tastes like those "red hot" candies I had as a kid with tabasco sauce. Chambord on steroids. Hot, hot, hot.

Sweet and hot. Sticky, but not as much as could be considering sweetness of it.

The carbonation makes it somewhat drinkable (relative to a liqueur). It is a tough one. Drinkability rated for what it is. I can't say it's not drinkable, but wow is it ever a slow-sipper. Caveat Emptor.

The family stopped by the Dogfish Ale House for a Christmas Eve lunch. The Fort was served on tap, in a snifter and chilled.

I first had Fort last summer at the DFH pub in Rehobeth. All I recall is high alcohol and bewilderment over what fruit was in this beer. This time around, the brewers took the time to get everything right and it shows.

Appearance: The ale comes in a snifter with a small to neglible head. It is coppery-red, with an emphasis on the red from the raspberries.

Smell: Thiere is a definite raspberry smell here. It is a pleasant aroma, similar to Lindemans, but not as sweet and overbearing. The alcohol (18%) also makes itself known.

Taste: A great tasting fruit beer! The raspberry is present, but not too strong. It mixes well with the ale and provides a great lift in the taste. The alcohol is very well masked, making this a potent brew.

Mouthfeel: Unlike the first batch which lacked Raspberry content, the fruit is quite evident now. It is a mild sweetness that mixes well with the alcohol and malt. There is no overpowering hops feeling to scour the palate.

Drinkability: I've got to give this a '3' as it weighs in at 18%, which seriously limits the drinkability. Despite the ABV, I will try another one, next time I find it on tap.

Appearance: Amber slightly cloudy look pours with a huge effervescent head cloudy white fluffy leaves massive chunky layers of lace. Aroma: Tart raspberries floud the senses along with bready yeast notes some spicy character over ripened with spicy alcohol fruit notes sugary and tart blend. Taste: Flowing raspberry flavor with a highly alcohol phenol character flowery hop presence with more of the bready yeast and biscuit malt sweetness a bit of a honey raspberry syrup tone. Mouthfeel: Syrupy texture semi-colloidal very coats the palate yet still has a fine carbonation it's hard to explain a strange sensation on the palate for sure medium bodied overall...I guess. Drinkability: Heavy dose of raspberries a ton to be exact helped the natural fruit sugars for fermentation purposes reaching that 18% could be probably be tricky without 'em easy to consume in a mellow fashion to get too relaxation status fine off centered ale, I like it.

Extremely cloudy, almost as if yeast was stirred into it. No light shines through. The color is burnt orange. Decent head, but very little lace.

Sweet, but slightly plastic; muffled sour cherry aroma.

This is an extreme beer: Powerful alcoholic warmth, particularly in the swallow. Strong sour cherry flavor up front. The body is very rich and the carbonation is notably muted. Interestingly, I taste no yeast.

Such a powerful beer in such a large bottle, I wonder if I can finish it. In many ways its like drinking a port or other fortified liquor. This deserves to be served from a smaller vessel. Or you could share this one with six friends.

Poured into my DFH glass a very nice dark golden amber color, very nice carbonation, nice two-finger fizzy off-white head, which does leave some nice sticky lacing behind. The nose is malty, lots of raspberries, spices, with some caramel. The taste is sweet, malty, big raspberry flavour, some spicyness, and caramel. Medium body, the alcohol is noticeable, but not overwhelming with a brew this high in ABV. Very drinkable, I like this one, glad to have a chance to finally try it.

A- This beer has a light crystal clear coppery body with a red tint. The head is a creamy thick dense foam that last and last. The foam sticks to the glass and looks of a slight pink hue but that might be the reflection of the beer.

S- The smell of sweet fresh raspberries is strong and wonderful. There is a supporting aroma of slightly toasted malt and perhaps some green hops. As it warms there is a bit of a buttered cooked corn note with the hops.

T- There is a bold sweet raspberry flavor that finishes a bit dry. There is a big alcohol taste to finish but it compliments the fruit. I don't taste any big fusel alcohols so it is not very harsh. There are some green resin hop flavors in the finish that are "kicked up" by the fizz and alcohol. As this beer warms some notes of cooked corn start to come through in the flavor.

M- The mouthfeel is medium light with a fizz in the texture and some alcohol heat that finishes the beer. As this beer warms more of the fusel alcohols come through and really give it more of a kick.

D- I think this is a good but young beer. I never thought of aging an American fruit beer until today. This has some nice fruit but the alcohol makes the hops really stand up and demand attention. I like it better than Champagne but not as much than some framboise I have had before. I will have to find another bottle or two and rereview in several years. It's nice they print the bottled date on the glass itself.

750 ml brown champagne style magnum with just a cap. No freshness date, but a beer this strong will age quite well.

A- The lace crackles as it slowly loses retention, good clarity ... the sediment was left behind during this pouring.

S- Smells of a raspberry cordial, sweet with a huge fruity raspberry nose.

T&M- Clean malt palate, touch of neutral yet mildly nutty yeast. Loads of berry flavors but predominantly raspberry juice. Moderate body with a slick crispness on the palate. Clean but lightly solvent alcohol warms with each sip. Clean and semi-dry finish with a fading fruitiness.

D- Wow, quite an amazing ride for a fruit beer. A little bit more alcohol and I'd be drinking gourmet schnapps. Share this beer between a few friends with a slab of raspberry filled baked Brie cheese.

From 7/24/10 notes.

a - Pours a dark amber color with an inch of reddish head and moderate carbonation evident.

s - Smells of cherries, dark fruits, and fruity
malts. Hints of alcohol, but not that bad considering the 18% ABV.

t - Tastes of raspberries, other dark fruits, caramel malts, fruity malts, and a bit of alcohol. Again, not too bad considering the ABV.

m - Medium body and low carbonation.

d - I thought this was a pretty good fruit beer. The high ABV would make it hard to drink too much of it, but I didn't feel as though it hurt the smell, taste, or feel. I've had lower ABV beers where the alcohol was much more prominent. Would try again.

750ml bottle purchased from Julio's, Westboro, MA.

Poured into a Rapscallion glass, formed 1" beige head over the clear reddish copper brew. Head lasts and lasts, with tons of little bubbles rising from the bottom of the glass, and heavy frothy lacing. Aroma is tart raspberries, with a bit of an earthy undercurrent. Taste is the same tart raspberries, duelling with malty sweetness and strong alcohol. The sweetness is almost cloying, and the alcohol heartily warms all the way down. Mouthfeel and drinkability are both not bad, but it certainly doesn't go down terribly smooth. Interesting brew, but I probably wouldn't go through the effort or expense to find this one again. To clarify, I can appreciate what they're doing here, I just don't have to like it.

Plenty of mixed reviews on this one. Mine is a two year old sample, bottled on 11/28/05...
Appears an orange toned amber with a 2 finger, foamy, white head that quickly fades into a mild cap and collar. At first pour, there are a few floaters in there. Upon closer inspection, they are a few stray pieces of seperated raspberry puree complete with seeds.
Smell is remarkable and addictive from the first inhale. Notes of ripe raspberries, and freshly baked rhubarb pie with strawberries. Very intriguing and delightful.
Taste is that of an after dinner cordial that's been infused with ripe raspberries, caramelized sugar, and freshly cut strawberries.
Mouthfeel...I was expecting an over the top alcohol bomb judging by other reviews but I found this to be just the right amount of warmness to compliment the sweetness. I could compare this to some of the better Tawny Ports I've had. Save it, sit on it for a few years, drink it on a special occasion after dinner with some chocolate truffells, or creme brulee.

A serious beer with a serious reputation for f'ing up the drinker!

Pours a near clear amber colored beer that somehow manages to form a heroic level of head despite the mighty alcohol level present.

Smell is light tasty raspberries and raspberry liqueur with faint aromas of malt and black pepper. Alcohol carries additional fruit smells to my nose mostly a delightful peach aroma. Intense distillate of fruit aromas here that is quite nearly a perfume.

Taste is lighter than expected almost more like raspberry vodka than a beer. Alcohol is noticeable in the taste but also carries a nice no artificial fruit flavor to my mouth. Raspberry and peach are about equal in flavor here. After a bit the alcohol bite lessens and the tarter fruit flavors show up in the taste. After a bit this gets really floral in flavor and reminds me of the taste of Rose Jam I ate in Turkey.

Mouthfeel is thinner than you would expect, must be all the alcohol.

An interesting beer to say the least it is much closer to a liquor than a beer. Quite close to drinking a fruit flavored perfume this is a beer best reserved for special occasions, and savored in small cups.

Pours a dark cloudy amber/orange color with some golden ruby hues when held to a light source and a thin white foam head that quickly disappears leaving no lacing behind.

Sour funky aroma with a subtle hint of raspberry which is surprising, until you take a sip. Massive alcohol presence which makes this beer smell more like Mad Dog 20/20 than a beer.

Once again the alcohol dominates the flavor taking away from any semblance of other flavors including the faint hints of raspberry and sugar. Firey alcohol burn lasts throughout warming up the chest in the finish.

I thought that this beer was flat out disgusting and undrinkable. It is the only beer I have ever drain poured. I guess if you want to get wasted there could be some value in it but I would just stick with Mad Dog. Gross!

First had: on tap at Dogfish Head, Rehoboth Beach, DE

Slightly hazy golden-peach color with a small head that left a bit of soapy lacing, but didn't stick around too long. Aroma of raspberries and grainy alcohol, and not much else. Taste of raspberry, framboise-ish, but much bigger on the booze. Not much else in the way of flavor or complexity, pretty straightforward, pretty strong, delivers what it promises. Medium in body and carbonation. Not a bad beer, but definitely not for everyone. A shot of raspberry vodka is probably cheaper and you'll get the same effect, and be able to move on with your life quicker.

Bottle shared by Grant - thanks! I've been balking at buying this for a while so I'm glad I get the chance to try non-king-sized portions.

Pours a hazy purplish-amber color with a thin white head. The head recedes into a thin ring around the glass leaving light lacing.

Smells of bright raspberries with good amounts of darker blackberries in there as well. It's got a bit of tartness that keeps the inherent sweetness from being overwhelming.

Tastes similar to how it smells. There's really no influence from whatever types of malts were used as the raspberry and milder blackberry flavors overpower everything else. Again, they're not overly sweet which is nice. Near the end of the sip a good deal of warming occurs due to the high ABV but it's a good deal away from tasting fusel-like.

Mouthfeel is good. It has a nice thickness with active carbonation.

Drinkability is OK. As mentioned before I'm glad I didn't have to polish an entire 750 off by myself as I don't think I'd be very happy afterwards.

Overall this was better than I was expecting - it's a big beer for sure but the alcohol is relatively well-hidden and the berry flavors have good levels of tartness and sweetness. Worth a shot if you can find some friends to share it with.

The beer upon its emancipation from the 750ml brown bottle, resides in the glass a limpid rusted orange with bountiful creamy light tan head that slowly erodes leaving a velum like coating of lace upon the glass. Nose is saturated with raspberries, sweet at the front but a nice tart tangy tones at the back, quite a sniffer this beer, start is sweet with a tangy twang as it hits the back of your palate, the grain profile delectable and the top middling its feel. Finish is staunch in its acidity, the hops enjoyable with a bit of alcohol bite at the very end, quite dry and a real tummy warmer, what a treat on St. Patrick’s Day as I sit here listening to Elmore James, and relax from a long week of drudgery.

I've had a bottle since I bought one in Arizona back in March. My friend had a going away party earlier tonight, and I thought it would be nice to celebrate with such a unique beer. 750 ml bottle shared with three other people, on to the beer:

This must be what raspberry fruit juice looks like without the added colors. Murky apricot skin color, no head to be found in this one. The aroma is a nice one. Lovely raspberry aroma, like raspberry syrup. Some booze sneaks through the nostrils as well. The taste is where things become love or hate. It tastes like fresh raspberry syrup, and you feel a moderate kick on the palate, but going down it really burns. It tastes like really good raspberries, but...it's extremely boozy. Syrupy in the mouth, but not cloying, with a pinch of fizz.

I knew I would be in for a ride with Fort. The flavor is really nice, though the afterburn is a high price to pay. 7 ounces was enough for me, so make sure this beer is shared. As for experiments....cook with it, mix drinks with it, impress your friends with it....or attempt to drink a magnum of this.

A: Pours a beautiful dark and hazy cranberry orange color with no visible head.

S: Big fruity aroma with tons of fresh natural raspberries and a nice tart/sourness on nose.

T: Some alcohol is also detected. Huge tart raspberry flavor. Flavor is fruity (cherries, cranberries, and raspberries) with a nice rough berry coating on tongue. Hot raspberry alcohol tang finishes this beer out.
